Bush Doctrine cant match Reagans
Was Ronald Reagan the first neoconservative? And so, would the Gipper have invaded Iraq, just like George W. Bush? Not surprisingly, the neocons are claiming the Reagan legacy - the evidence notwithstanding.

America was lucky to have Reagan
I was lucky enough to have worked for Ronald Reagan for five years, from 1979 to 1984. And "lucky" is the right word.

Voting ‘Catholic creates a new schism
When President George W. Bush meets with the pope in Rome Friday, he will probably be thinking, at least some of the time, about the 65 million Catholic voters back home.

Energy looms as tough campaign issue
The big news today might be Iraq, or the Bush-Kerry election, but the bigger news tomorrow is likely to be the future of energy. Hint: It's going to cost more, even as alternatives proliferate.

Schwarzenegger seeks centrist role
LOS ANGELES - As the richest and most populous state in the union, California, to no one's surprise, has produced more than its share of national figures in recent decades: Presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, would-be presidents such as Jerry Brown and Pete Wilson. And now, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. But of course, unlike his Golden State predecessors, the foreign-born Schwarzenegger is prevented by the Constitution from going to the White House - or is he?

Fights for honor span the centuries
Nothing much changes in 3,000 years. That's the lesson one takes away from the new movie "Troy," as well as from the continuing stream of violent images from the Middle East.

An Iraqi comeback story to ponder

The movie "Godsend," which opens tomorrow, is the latest in a series of cautionary tales about the dangers of human cloning. Yet the caution is also a come-on.

Wife's tax secrecy could hurt Kerry
What does John Kerry have to hide about his Vietnam service? Probably not much, although you wouldn't know it from the way he's been behaving lately. But his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry - she could be a different story.

Kerry moves Bush-ward on Iraq
The irony of John Kerry's presidency - if there is to be one - is that while the senator might be elected because of unrest over the Iraq war, he would be likely to carry on George W. Bush's Iraq policies. The main difference is that Kerry's Iraq policy would lack the idealism of Bush's.

Their ‘battle stations were no defense
When terrorists plan to strike America, should they call in advance and make reservations? If not - if they aren't specific about time and place - should President George W. Bush and the rest of the federal government be held blameless for failing to stop them? That's been the view of the White House for the past two-and-a-half years, although public pressure may be changing that complacency.

Their ‘battle stations’ were no defense
When terrorists plan to strike America, should they call in advance and make reservations? If not -- if they aren't specific about time and place -- should President George W. That's been the view of the White House for the past two-and-a-half years, although public pressure may be changing that complacency.

Pre-9/11 doings are coming to light
If you knew that President Franklin D. Roosevelt had received a memo a month before Pearl Harbor entitled, "Japanese Determined to Attack the United States in the Pacific," and that he had done nothing about that information, would that knowledge change your perception of FDR as a wise war leader?

There was enough in the 9/11 hearings on Tuesday and Wednesday to make partisans on all sides unhappy. Partisans for the truth, however, have some ground for optimism.

So why is Clarke telling all now?
Richard Clarke has published a devastating critique of George W. Bush's national security policy. Of course, the allegations might not be the whole story, because lots of other people have their stories too. So it's a good thing that we have an ongoing investigation, in which people could go to jail if they lie.

PINKERTON: Longing for answers, capture of enemies
There's a single War on Terror, and all the Good Guys are on one side and all the Bad Guys are on the other side. That was President George W. Bush's argument Friday as he marked the one-year anniversary of the Iraq war.
