Dave Rickey Fires Up Engines of Creation
BERKELEY, CA, June 3, 2003 Dave Rickey, a well-known online game enthusiast & designer, today began publishing Engines of Creation, a new column on game design. This biweekly column is the newest entry in Skotos Tech's Online Gaming Library, which already includes almost 500 articles on online games, with 2-3 new ones being published every week.
Dave Rickey has been involved with two of the most successful online game launches to date. At Verant he was Assistant Head Game Master for EverQuest. At Mythic Entertainment, he was a world builder and developer of economic systems. His mission statement for his new column is simple. "Engines of Creation studies the process, theory, and business of making online games," says Dave.
Engines of Creation joins a number of successful columns that are already a part of the Skotos Online Gaming Library some long-running, others new and innovative. The current columns include: The Medium, by Karrin Dailey, which investigates online communities; Playing with History, by Michael Karlin, which considers issues of historical game design; Trials, Triumphs, and Trivialities, by Shannon Appelcline, which offers lessons learned from running Skotos Tech, an online gaming channel; Building Stories, Telling Games, by RPG industry veteran Travis Casey, which considers gaming from the point-of-view of tabletop roleplaying games; and Storms on Cloud 9, by Scott Holliday, which focuses on the mechanics of online games.
Two fan favorites, Biting the Hand by Jessica Mulligan, and Notes from the Dawn of Time by Richard Bartle, are currently on hiatus, but expected to return. The complete archives of each column remain available at Skotos.
The Skotos Online Gaming Library is freely available at http://www.skotos.net/articles.
