The story behind Terry Gilliam's Brazil is a case of life mirroring art mirroring life. The movie concerns a world awash in bureaucracy, where free thought and creativity erode under a deluge of surveillance and red tape. The film itself almost fell prey to something very similar. When Universal chairman Sid Sheinberg first saw the movie, he demanded that Gilliam cut its length and add a happy ending -- the studio even edited their own version. The original vision survived only because Gilliam surreptitiously screened his cut for the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, who named it the best movie of 1985. It's easy to see why. Imagine Kafka via Monty Python, with a dash of film-noir and a twist of surreal fantasy. The film's elaborate plot is set in motion by a typographical error, whereby an innocent man named Buttle is mistaken for a terrorist named Tuttle (Robert DeNiro). The ensuing web of confusion snares the mild-mannered Sam Lowry (Jonathan Pryce) and... well, summary is woefully inadequate; see it for yourself. (The battle over the film is chronicled in this book, and the movie is done glorious justice on this DVD.) (-more)
