We'd be hearing about High Fidelity, as critics start to create their “Ten Best” lists, even if it hadn't been an exceptionally weak year for movies. Based upon the cult novel by Nick Hornby, but recast in Chicago, instead of its original London setting, Fidelity is a smart, smarting work that's fiercely funny and oddly honest. Rob (John Cusack), a record store owner--who is our narrator and hero--takes us through his Top Five break-ups of all time. His most recent was with Laura (the amazing Iben Hjejle), but she's not even in the running. Instead he lists five other members of the opposite sex that tromped on his heart, including the mythic Charlie (Catherine Zeta-Jones)—and Rob spends much of the film trying to answer the age-old question, “Is it ME?” Cusack helped adapt the screenplay and served as co-producer yet gives the other characters in the film some of the best lines and scenes. Jack Black, as one of Rob's lousy employees, carves out one of the most memorable supporting roles of the year, in one of the best films of the year, High Fidelity.
