Travel Advisory
By HAMMOND GUTHRIE
Who would dare to threaten
honored citizens with removal
of their pensions- to become destitute,
and with the random sale of their houses-
to become homeless and dishonored?
Indeed, who dares to threaten
former teachers of the blind,
an heroic activist shield
against this war in Iraq,
with imprisonment and fines?
Never mind the dead children
Up against the wall activists!
the Treasury Dept.
will continue to release travel advisories
t-hreatening cluster bombs in definitive denial
as to what the term "humanitarian workers"
actually means in acts of non-violent protest
Blindman's nausea vision, air
sickness and more
mushroom clouds of death fireball carnage
into world living room video games intent
upon punishing anti-war actions and support
yet dissent will not be constrained by hypocrisy

And So We Hear Again
By SAM HAMOD
And so we hear again,
Of blackouts
Of water shortages
Of totally polluted air
Of unending wars
Of deaths in Iraq
Of deaths in Afghanistan
Of deaths in Palestine
Of terrorists in our midst
Of yellow to orange alerts
Of orange to red alerts
Of SARS
Of smallpox
Of anthrax
Of e coli in our chickens and beef
Of mercury in our fish
Of an dozens of nightly auto accidents
Floods, earthquakes,
Oncoming hurricanes, tornadoes,
New rates of joblessness
Falling wages
Rising deficits
All this on the nightly news
Every night
All night
On every channel
Or,
Can we decide who the Bachelor should choose, or
Who the Bachelorette should choose, or
Who should be Elimidated out, or in, or
Who shall be the Survivor, or
Who shall win a Million dollars tonight, or
Listen to endless inane and not funny alleged jokes.
Or you can just shut that damn
television set off
Sit back, breathe, maybe go out
Take a walk, call a friend, read a poem,
Write a letter to the editor,
Call your congressperson or senator, or
Even call that fool in the White House, or
Take a swim, play some tennis, or
Just do nothing-
The key thing is,
Don't just sit there
Falling asleep,
Losing your mind,
Losing your life
In front of the idiot tube....

Solidarity Forever
By STEW ALBERT
Blackness
like Baghdad
but not from bombs.
In accidental Solidarity
with the Iraqi people
the entire east coast of America
goes without electricity
baths
subways
CNN
air conditioning
and
gossiping on the phone.
Walking home
millions of people in the street
crossing the Brooklyn Bridge
returning to a sweltering apartment
ten flights up
what axis of evil
planed this hideous night?
They sat in offices
calculating plus and minus
deciding
it's better investing
in trinket building
in India
than hiring union labor
and constructing
backup grids
in Niagara Falls and Detroit.
Same calculations
concluded the cost of war
a bargain
at the price
for all the oil in Iraq.
Two blackouts.
One cruel thought.
