IMDb Movie of the day
"They're not meant to stay up, though somehow they do," murmurs Bridget Fonda near the end of Strapless, an oddly fascinating drama about the nature of love and desire, and the ways that spontaneous passion can make your heart soar -- or come crashing down in tiny pieces. Writer-director David Hare wrote this film for his then-partner Blair Brown, who plays an American doctor living in London, contending with Thatcherite bureaucracy in her hospital job and a free-spirited sister (Fonda) who's eyeing a career as a dress designer with the same care she devotes to her whirlwind single lifestyle. Brown is a model of composure and independence -- and passive observation -- until she bumps into a mysterious Continental gentleman (Bruno Ganz) who sweeps her off her feet during an Italian vacation. But as this charming man relishes teaching her the wonder of impulsiveness and romance, Brown begins to wonder: is he the real thing -- or a façade? Brown shines in what's arguably her best film role as she tunnels into her characters slowly cracking exterior, and comes to realize that passion in one's life needn't be confined only to the bedroom. Fonda is all lazy sensuality -- even as her character becomes pregnant -- and Ganz is the perfect romantic enigma, up to the very end. Hare's wonderfully ambiguous conclusion will bring a smile to your lips, and conveys the message that even after the end of a relationship, somehow the people we loved (whether for the right or wrong reasons) will always be with us. - Mark Englehart
