04:05 pm - songs i wrote here are some recent GarageBand songs i made:
king softie (mp3) this is an accordion song i composed in 1993. i played it with a friend's band a couple times, but never got a decent recording of it.
thing 2 (mp3) this is a short piano riff my grandpa taught my brother when he was little. my grandpa used to play the piano during silent movies, so he had all sorts of "scene" music memorized. this happens to be "bar fight/chase scene" music. it's, like, 10 seconds. and it has a disco beat! 11:41 pm - i am vegetarian, hear me rant what's the deal with salads at restaurants these days? it used to be whenever i went to restaurants that didn't have vegetarian food i'd end up getting a salad, and the salad would be vegetarian (i.e. not covered with meat).
tonight chris and i went to eat at the peninsula creamery. they have a couple of salads, but nowhere do they have descriptions of what things are in the salads. so i took a chance and ordered a spinach salad. the simple name lead me to believe that it would be a simple salad. what did i get? a salad covered in bacon. and not fake bacon bits, but chunks of real bacon. it took like 10 minutes to pick them out of my salad, which pissed me off because i was already starving to to begin with, and not very happy with the waiter who kept walking away from us when we tried to order. arrrgh.

04:58 pm - a couple music reviews i've been listening to all my new music and wanted to share some of my favs with you all.
Call and Response: awesome! i saw them open up for 'The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players' and i thought they sounded pretty cool. downloaded their big hit 'i Know You Want Me' as my free pepsi iTunes song and love it! lots of rockin' and beautiful vocal harmonies. fun happy music. i definitely want to hear more.
Camper Van Beethoven: "hoedown meets garage rock" i always loved the song 'take the skinheads bowling' but... silly me, i never got the album. now that i have it, i'm glad. it is one of those cds i should have had in my collection all this time.
Cornelius: Japanese artist described as "a more schizophrenic Beck," lots of layers of vocals, happy spunky melodies and funky synths. oh how i love Japanese electronic pop.
Moxy Fruvous: oh my god! why didn't i get stuff by these guys sooner? it makes me so happy! yay for accordion geek-rock. destined to be a favorite.
Neutral Milk Hotel: i say YAY for the musical saws and squeaky chair sounds! Current Mood: happy

02:51 pm - Once I was the King of Spain! Today i had lunch with my boy (mmm, Quiznos) and afterwards we perused Tower Records, where i found a Moxy Fruvous CD for $1.99. it was the one with 'King of Spain' on it, which made me really, really excited. I've always loved that song, but never got the album. Then yesterday i joined this iTunes website called Musicmobs, which is basically a site for iTunes geeks to list out all their music so other people who have similar music tastes can learn about other artists. (for instance, yesterday i learned that a lot of people who like They Might Be Giants also like Moxy Fruvous.) So I made a point to look for a Moxy Fruvous CD and... viola, i found one! yay!
After lunch i dropped my boy off at work and headed over to Target where i found some nifty flip-flops (pink and light blue with flowers), a winning iTunes Pepsi (yeeeaaahh!), some magic beauty cream that flpflopz recommended and i can't wait to try, and a couple things for my boy, 'cos he's the best ever.
Yay! it's a happy lucky shopping day! :)
Edited to add: The title of the CD is "Bargainville" which i find amusing considering it was $1.99. Radipus. Current Mood: Now I eat humble pie.

01:45 am - Trachtenburgs at Slim's tonight tonight i met up with bigpancakes, stephaniebird and my boy to see the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players at Slim's. the whole night was some sort of 'noise pop' fest, which meant a bunch of bands before the band we wanted to see. the first band was loud and i couldn't really get into them. they ended their set with a song which repeated the lyrics "one two three" over and over. it left a lot to be desired. the next band was just horrible. the drummer had a headset and was mumble-yelling and we just wanted him to stop! then he said something about remote controls, how none of them can turn on the sun. it was weird. we were like "huh?" then dave said something like "yeah our remote control can't make you stop!" the third band was actually quite nice, a band called "call and response" with 3 female vocalists. they were described in an article as sounding like Stereolab. the songs were pretty mellow and made us sleepy. they did have a bit of a stereolab sound, but in english... and then...after so much waiting... the Trachtenburgs came on stage!
Jason (the dad) was stuttering and bumbling around and making a lot of false starts to the songs. i don't know if it was just because it was late and he was tired, or if he was not feeling well or was nervous or what but it definitely wasn't as good as the first show i saw last year in New York. oh well. otherwise it was fun... they played 'Look at Me!' and i got to see the slide with the naked lady -- heh. (i missed that the last time because i was too short to see the slides from the crowd.) Rachel (the daughter) didn't sing very much, (or her mic wasn't working?) and that was sort of a bummer 'cos i like it when she sings. after the show, dave got stephanie a Rachel doll. it was very cute. :)
time for bed! Current Mood: tired

10:56 pm - seven, eight, a great big APE! i went with gretchen, micah and chris to the Alternative Press Expo (APE) today. it was fun. i've gone every year since '99 (which was the last year it was held in San Jose), and every year it gets bigger and bigger. it's fun, but wow... so crowded! i was getting overwhelmed. i was also feeling sort of shy to talk to a lot of the artists because i hardly know any of them anymore, and i didn't do my research on who would be there... sigh! oh well. i had fun. i saw tmcm (who gave me a copy of his mag-- yay!) and pipu and seanthesean (who had the raddest booth set up ever) and Jason ("JT") Thompson there. i missed deadslug (he called my cell just after i'd left -- d'oh!) but we got some comic books. chris read my optic nerve (#9) in the car on the way home. :)
i was lagging on my freelance work this weekend. i originally had this really simple (but not necessarily great) solution of how i'd get the work done; but realized i should really go all out and do something really cool. so i started doing that, and now i'm stuck and i can't figure out how to get the bugs out. this means trial and error. lots of trial and error. le sigh.
