Soup |
[15 Oct 2004|09:32am] |
I'm looking for a place in San Francisco that serves good soup. Is there a restaurant/cafe that serves mostly soups and salads in the city? I am craving for good corn chowder and good Chicken and wild rice soup.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks all.

Das ist gut, ja? |

Went to Schnitzelhaus last weekend, marking the first time I've had German food both in SF, and since I was in Germany several years ago. The prices were a bit higher than listed on the linked page (which is 2 years old now; the Jägerschnitzel was $17-something, IIRC), but still a pretty good deal, considering that they came w/ a soup or salad, and there was enough left over for both of us to take home for lunch the next day. The plates were huge, as were the schnitzels (breaded & pan-fried cutlets), which took up at least half the platter. They've also got a full-page beer list, with sizes everywhere from the standard .3L and .5L to the 2-liter "boot". Too bad I'm not a beer drinker...
The place was relatively quiet, being Sunday, although the waiter/owner mentioned it's a lot livelier on Fridays & Saturdays. Speaking of, the owner was easily one of the most interesting parts of going there. He was busy talking to some other people he apparently knew for most of our dinner, but after we'd finished, I casually mentioned that it was the first time I'd had German food since I'd been to Germany, his eyes lit up and he began babbling at a mile a minute in his thick German/Austrian accent, asking "You been to Germany? What did you like about Germany? Where did you go?", which soon launched into a 10-minute rant about waiting 9 years for his immigration papers, his triple-citizenship (Austria/Germany/US), meeting Arnold Schwarzenegger, politics, etc., after which he walked away, still holding the check we'd been waiting for. Oops. Took us a while to get out of there, but it makes for an amusing story.
Back to the food- I had the Jägerschnitzel (pork cutlet), my girlfriend had the Hühnerschnitzel (chicken cutlet). Both came with roasted carrots, red sauerkraut, and Spätzle (sort of a cross between thick noodles & tiny dumplings). The potato soup was also quite good. I wouldn't recommend dessert, however- we tried both the German chocolate cake and the apple strudel a la mode (the only two choices, at $6 each)- both seemed like they were store-bought, and were just taken out of the fridge & served (the strudel was microwaved a bit first, ice cream & all). Seemed like we could've just gotten dessert at the Safeway bakery. Oh well. The actual dinner itself was quite good, though. We'll probably go there again, perhaps on a livelier night.

Hi -
I'm meeting someone (from out of town) for dinner on Monday and I need help finding a good place to eat in SF. They're staying at a hotel about three blocks from Union Square, so anything within walking distance of that area would be good. I will have my car though, so it's not totally limited to just that area.
The price range, maybe $10 - $20 or so, definitely nothing too extravagant.
(My bf's dad will be attending a conference in SF for 3 days and wants to take me out for dinner, and I live in the South Bay, so I really have no idea where to go.)

Did I see an Indian restaurant in Montara? |
[14 Oct 2004|01:43pm] |
I was driving through Montara today, and I caught a brief glimpse of what looked like a sign for an Indian restaurant - I saw the words "Indian" and "Curry." Was going by quickly and didn't have the time to turn around and investigate more thoroughly, but - I'm curious. Anyone know if there's an Indian restaurant there? I didn't come up with anything on a Google search.

On Wednesday, November 10, 2004 and Wednesday, November 17, 2004, thousands of neighbors and friends in The Castro, Noe Valley, SOMA, and Mission will give support to loved ones with AIDS and breast cancer by participating in DINE AROUND.
By simply going out to lunch or dinner at any of up to 50 neighborhood restaurants, you can help support local merchants and raise funds for two great charities: AIDS Emergency Fund and Breast Cancer Emergency Fund. On these dates, participating restaurants will donate 25% of their food and beverage receipts.
See a full list of participating restaraunts @ http://www.aef-sf.org/dinearoundsf/

Ambassadors and table hosts are needed. If you would like to host a group of friends, family, co-workers visit the website for more information. This is a popular group on Livejournal.
"Informal poll" With any response to this post, why not include a restaraunt experience or place where you would dine? Invite others to come and eat with you. I am still personally deciding where to host a table. Cheers!

hi everybody!
i'm trying to plan a birthday dinner in SAN FRANCISCO since that's where we live, for my boyfriend next month [yes, want to start planning early] and i'm looking for any suggestions for a restaurant that's perfect for a large group of people [12-15 people], not too expensive [meaning: no ultra fancy places]. He's thinking maybe some chinese or japanese restaurant but i'm not sure which one. Places that take reservations are a plus.
thanks all!

The parents are coming! |
[04 Oct 2004|12:23pm] |
Hey all-
My folks will be in town this weekend. I'd like to take them out to dinner. My parents really appreciate good food and wine. And I don't want to spend too much money. I noticed most of the stuff on the zagats survey that was posted was a little pricey.
Other ideas?
Also my mom flips out and wants to go to Nan king. Is that really the best Chinese?
thanks!

Zao Noodle House location CLOSED |
[02 Oct 2004|07:10pm] |
I just found out this evening that the 16th Street location (near the Castro) of Zao Noodle House is permanently closed.
I'm bummed, because there were some things on their menu I really liked, including the tofu fries.
If anyone else can recommend noodle houses (in particular with lots of rice noodles, since I have a gluten sensitivity) around the Castro and Noe Valley, that would be great!
I'm particularly fond of Pho Ga, too.

hookah bars |
[28 Sep 2004|09:03am] |
Hi. I have a houseguest staying with me from out of town that really likes hookah bars and since I don't smoke, I don't know of any in the area. Do any of you know of any hookah bars (preferably in the east bay, preferably close to public transit)?
Thanks! Jordan
