Kill Bill: Volume 1- 10+
Genre: Action
Year: 2003
Rating: US R/ Can R for Explicit Action Violence/Gore and Disturbing Images.
Director: Quentin Tarantino
Cast:
Uma Thurman
Lucy Liu
Plot:
This sums it up brilliantly, "Uma Thurman will Kill Bill".
My Thoughts:
Kill Bill: Volume 1 is, without a doubt, one of Tarantino's best films. Even though this is only his fourth, that still is saying quite a bit. Actually, I would go as far as saying that it's as good as Pulp Fiction but it's VERY different. Kill Bill is not a film that everyone will fully "get". It's an homage movie and it's inspirations are obvious (anime, grindhouse, kung-fu, exploitation) but credible.
When viewing a film like Kill Bill, you can't take everything seriously, even though many of the scenes are played out that way. When we see Uma wake out of her coma and the camera lingers on her for about a full minute without moving as she cries out in desperation for her lost child. The scene is not only poetic but also extremely disturbing and adds a lair of seriousness to the film that can't be denied. It's a powerful movie in many ways, a funny movie in many ways and just an all around great time.
The styles used by Quentin are reason enough to pay to see this flick. When you see Japan from the plane, it's actually a model city, the same one they used in Godzilla (not the crappy CGI version but the crappy old one's that worked because of their cheesiness). One sequence shows the complete inner workings of a gun while it's fired and none of it is done with CGI. It's brilliant, to say the least, and stands out as a perfect sequence in an already perfect film. I urge everyone to see Kill Bill, it's cliffhanger ending is perfect setup for the second half and I will be shelling out the cash to see it. Not to be missed!
Acting- 10/10
Uma Thurman gives the best performance she's ever given and the best of the year so far.
Directing- 10/10
Quentin creates a visual feast full of some of the best shots this year.
Gore- 10+ ***Gore Hall Of Fame***
This is what gore is supposed to look like, everyone take note! Blood spurts in every direction with decapitations, arms cut off, tons of legs are cut off, someone's cut in half, the top of someone's head is sliced off exposing the brain, and so so so much more! I can't wait to see the uncut version (with all of the B&W shots in colour).
Nudity- 1/10
None but Uma looks very sexy with lots of tight clothes. The gogo girl and Lucy Liu also look great.
