Abortion Wars Abortion should be legal.
And in most cases, getting abortions makes great sense economically.
But it should only under extenuating circumstances be moral.
I used to think that it was no big deal if a woman gets an abortion w/i the first three months...but if fetuses didn't grow inconspicuously in our stomachs but rather grew in a clear chamber in the palm of our hands, I know I could *never* squeeze it to death. And I don't think many women could, even though squeezing it to death in our hands would achieve the exact same end as does sucking it out of uteruses.
Ideally, I think more pro-choice women need to make the choice never to put themselves in the position to get themselves pregnant in the first place. I think more pro-choice women need to think about the value of human life from the standpoint of personal responsibility. Intercouse is the one and only act of creating new life, and a couple who has intercouse should be ready and willing to care for new life if conception happens, even if they tried to prevent it via contraception, which in turn never claims to be 100% effective.
And if they don't want to keep the baby, they should think seriously about adoption. Abortions may be less traumatic initially than adoption...but according to
this book , not by much. And if a woman lets her unwanted baby be adopted by a family who wants it, at least she'll have the long-term peace of mind knowing that she gave the kid a chance at a real life rather than the long-term guilt of knowing that she gave the kid no chance at all.
There's no right answer to this issue, but the older I get, the more conservative I seem to become.
