Lilly Endowment’s $500,000 grant
strengthens Habitat for Humanity fund raising

AMERICUS, Ga., Feb. 12, 2004 — The Lilly Endowment Inc. contributed a half-million dollars to Habitat for Humanity to help affiliates enhance their local fund-raising efforts to build even more homes. The grant will finance training programs for Habitat staff at The Fund Raising School at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.

Over a three-year period, faculty from The Fund Raising School will teach a series of courses around the United States. Staff members from local Habitat offices – there are 1,500 enrollment opportunities – will study subjects such as principles and techniques of fundraising, major gifts, capital campaigns, grant proposal writing, planned giving, annual funds and marketing.

“We are so excited about Lilly Endowment’s generous grant to assist our U.S. affiliates with their fund-raising capabilities,” said David Williams, chief operating officer and executive vice president for Habitat for Humanity International. “The need for simple, decent housing is tremendous. We believe this grant will ultimately enable Habitat affiliates to build many more houses for years to come.”

Habitat staff also will be encouraged to pursue further coursework to earn a Certificate in Fund Raising Management through The Center on Philanthropy. Participants earn a certificate when they successfully complete at least four key courses.

“The program is designed to provide interactive courses taught by trained faculty who also are fund-raising professionals,” said Timothy L. Seiler, director, The Fund Raising School & Public Service. “Through teaching and mentoring, faculty will help Habitat for Humanity staff increase their capacity for raising funds to further their mission.”

For 29 years, the school has helped thousands of fund-raising professionals around the world achieve new success. The school teaches historical and philanthropic context, current issues, art and science of fund-raising and philanthropy. Professionals take back knowledge needed to build their organization’s resources with confidence and success.

The Endowment, established in 1937 by members of the Lilly family for their personal philanthropic interests, is separate from Eli Lilly and Co., and Eli Lilly and Co. Foundation and is independently managed.

Habitat for Humanity International is a Christian ministry dedicated to eliminating poverty housing. Founded in 1976 by Millard Fuller, along with his wife, Linda, Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliates in more than 3,000 communities in 92 nations have built and sold more than 150,000 homes to partner families with no-profit, zero-interest mortgages. www.habitat.org
