The Un-addicted
by Quentin Johnson

"What? What are you doing?”

“I’m flushing them.”

“Flushing them?”

Janus watches as FireBird’s wrists delicately and decisively presses the toilet lever down.

Janus looks down into the toilet and watches the sodden cigarettes break apart from the force of the waters sudden downward pull. He notices how sadly the tobacco breaks free from its binding and forms a kaleidoscope of brown and tan particles. Suddenly harmless, they disappear into the sparkling vortex of water and disappear.

He must really hate me, Janus thinks.

“I wish you hadn’t have done that.”

“Well, what’s done is done as you say.”

“What am I gonna do?”

“I guess you’re gonna live the way the un-addicted folks do.”

Without a single word more, FireBird turns around in their tiny bathroom, for once not knocking anything over, or jostling Janus or disturbing Timer, their ever-present cat. With his back erect and his head high, FireBird walks out of the bathroom leaving Janus staring into the toilet bowl, now clean, hissing with refilling water.

For a second, Janus considers running into the kitchen and grabbing a strainer. But he knows FireBird is right -- what’s done is done. He considers turning his panic towards a resolute and serene FireBird, but he realizes he can’t quite bring himself to blame FireBird for being right.

Janus follows FireBird into the den and sits heavily beside him on the couch. It occurs to Janus that he wants to cry, but he won’t. Tears will not reverse that delicate swirl of tobacco now peppering the septic tank. Without turning his head, he asks FireBird, “So how do the un-addicted live?”

Grimly, FireBird reaches for the remote control and starts to channel surf.

Oh, Lord! Janus thinks.

Suddenly, he feels like he’s choking.

For lack of a better title, "Surfer Dude."

If you know me at all, you know that I'm not someone who likes to tout the whole "rainbow pride" thing.. rather against it, really. But you must also understand that I do enjoy my sexuality. I'm not gay, but I'm not straight, but I'm not bisexual either. I'm somewhere in between gay and bi, really. So while I don't express "pride" in it, per se, I know it's there, and I know that I'm not shameful of it. I guess what I'm trying to get at is that the greyscaled background, the coloured guy, and the rainbow overlay are symbolic of the different facets of me. The grey is how I prefer to see myself. The colour is the way that I need to be for the world. The rainbow is that which is innate and cannot be changed in me.

Today I just try to do some (very quick) drawings with a whiteboard marker.
It's not a good pen for drawing!!! haha

And I've done some other versions with other stupid pens...

I am a painter, not a photographer.
I like to think I have a knack for 'composition'.
I took these in Mexico...I think they are really good...do you? see the images )

So today I was paid an honorarium to go and sit in the Phoenix Art Museum and draw. It seems that the Assistant Curator of Education thought that there was similarity between what I do, and what Degas did with some of his work and his bronzes.
Fakes? )
