Fri, Apr. 16th, 2004, 01:41 pm thehashimite posting in apologetics: the continuity of religion
Hey everyone. I joined your community first out of interest, but I also need some help from my fellow Christians: I'm doing a 15-20 page research paper for a class called "Classic Christian Texts 2" whose timeframe is basically from the Reformation to the present. We have to pick a work by an author within that timeframe, including why we think it should be considered a classic christian text (ie: the content provides a window into the time period and also, it must be timeless meaning the text still speaks to christians today). I picked THE CONTINUITY OF RELIGION by Bishop Jacques Benigne Bossuet by suggestion and it seems to fit so far as the text deals with salvific history (it was written to a young boy at the time). So my question to you all: Can anybody provide me with a link or text, etc. that can help my in my research, preferably any sort of CRITICISM on the book, in depth analysis on the text or anything else that would help? I've found many biographies on him so that isn't necessary; but information that gives further insight on the content in the book? Thank you all so much :) tricia Fri, Apr. 16th, 2004, 10:22 am magelizabeth posting in webdesign: Patience Please New Questions One, Two and Three...
Thanks to everyone who responded to my query about getting started. We need a red-line graphic for 'no front page'. Now the next questions which may seem very obvious to some, but I don't have a clue. If these questions are all answered in some good text, please just feel free to say 'enough with the questions - read this book......' I am given webspace by my ISP - Earthlink. I created a webpage using their tool 'Trellix'. It's okay, but I'm a photographer and I ended up using Bravenet to host my photographs as Trellix didn't allow me to protect them from being copied. Now question one - what are the options for webspace? Should I pay someone to 'host' my webpage and will I be given free reign to design my own pages there? Right now the webspace I have 'free' is an earthlink url with my name associated at the end ( /~myname). I feel that may be problematic down the road if I change ISP's or even to get a search Engine to list my URL. Question two - since photographs are key content - any upfront suggestions about photo content with respect to tools, etc. Do I want to stay away from having one of my images as a 'background' due to load time for people viewing my page? And question three - how do I list a string of 'searchable words' for search engines to find without having them show up as viewable text on the web page. Thanks in advance.... (1) CK NEEDS TO COME BACK NOW!!! The replacement doesn't know Phish songs very well, missed the few change related light moves he tried to make, and was partially responsible (IMO) for the first set being so sloppy. This might have been the most sloppy Phish show I've ever seen; the mistakes weren't missing a change or two, they were big and annoying and persistent. (2) Sneaking Sally was done old school. Vocal Jam like the versions from the 80s. In the vocal jam, they did a verse and chorus of Lime in the Coconut (3) Secret Smile has been completely rearranged. It's very Page centric now and about 7 minutes long. (4) Girls Girls Girls is in the running for worst Phish cover ever. What is it about Vegas and covers? I read the lyrics this morning and it was even worse than I thought. (5) The first half of the second set was very dark and flowed really well :) The Drowned jam was really bleak but then 2001 was celebratory then the DWD jam was even darker until the opening chords of Free brought it back. (6) The first set didn't flow at all... Lots of really long breaks (including one where Trey played an "annoying" guitar loop to show us how annoying it was and one where they were doing lots of cryptic hand signals to each other), and 4 break songs in a row - Old Home Place followed by Roggae followed by Water followed by All of These Dreams - made it feel really disjointed. (7) I have no idea how to rate this show. Lots of highs, lots of lows, it might be one of the ones that sound better on disc than at the show. 7:25 forgot one: (8) Jennifer Hartwick singing parts of GGG was my punishment for constantly joking to desertgirlva about how they were about to announce "Jennifer Hartwick ladies and gentlemen" to ruin my show. She's the person in TAB who I always bitch about. Fri, Apr. 16th, 2004, 02:05 pm purrthecat:
When feeling unwell, what's that one thing that totally makes you feel better? Mine is homemade potato soup. Actually, it's a very thick and creamy (use evaporated milk) stew. Soup implies it's liquidy. It's not really. It starts as potatoes diced and boiled in salty water till they would collapse if you breathed on them. Then after draining most of the water, chuck in loads of butter and evaporated milk (preferably Carnation's). Then it simmers until so thick and creamy and yummy that I can't wait any longer. And it's totally wonderful. In fact, I think it would help me feel better if I made some tonight, but I can't. :( I'm back on Atkins, so no lovely warm comfy potato soup for me. *sulk*

As there seems to be a meme going around, asking people to spread news of LJ's "recent picture" XML and its insecurity, let me post this here for one central linking point for people to use in their refutes: Only images from public posts go into the feed. That said, if you edit a post and change its security later from public to something else, it's still in the image queue until it rolls off (usually a couple minutes or less). Yesterday, I picked up the car. It wasn't as painful financially as it would have been if the manifold was cracked. In fact, they only replaced loads of gaskets and seals. The car runs very well now, actually, better than when it was 'serviced' by the other garage. I won't be going back to them, ever! My new local garage is cool. Explained exactly what they did, what they replaced and why and itemised everything on the bill. Yay for a good village garage! Last night, jebuscrust came over for dinner and cards. It was good fun. Although, I was feeling really tired. This morning I woke up with a sore neck. I thought maybe I'd slept funny. But last night I noticed a spot on my wrist (very itchy), and this morning there's one on the back of my neck - the side that is sore and muscles all tight. As the morning has gone on, my neck has gotten stiffer and my throat has started hurting too. My gland on that side seems to be swollen. *grrr* Just in time for the weekend too. I'm hoping it's just random spots and a tense neck. The last thing I want is chicken pox or something 'fun' like that. *fingers crossed* This weekend, the boy is off visiting friends. I think (if I'm not ill), I'll be visiting friends and having a girly movie marathon. Can't wait to see what the video shop has on offer. I hope they've got Calendar Girls and Love Actually among others. It's been awhile since I've seen The Piano. Since owning it, I've not gone 6 months without watching it once. :) I love that film. Anyway, what are you guys up to?

Interesting developments in electrical motors. It seems a gentleman in Japan has just secured a major contract for a machine that uses magnets as well as electrical power to run... Its efficiency rating screams hoax, yet he's secured patents and buyers for it... Snake oil or no, it's gotten press. A truly awful day. I spent the entire day on the same support call -- without even a break for lunch. I ended up having to hand it off to another engineer at the end of my shift with no resolution in sight, as I had to run for class. Made me feel worthless and defeated. And Microsoft's realtime streaming media protocol is custom-made to HURT YOUR HEAD. My best guess at this point is that there's either A) some sort of utterly bizarre hardware problem involving the backplane of the blade server all this is running on; B) there's a static route somewhere that's fucking everything up; or C) the LORD does not wish [questionable evangelical group X] to webcast its faith-healing telethon tomorrow night and has taken steps to make sure of this. Looking at the utter insanity I was seeing in those packet captures, divine intervention seems downright likely. Stupid Microsoft realtime streaming media protocol. Stupid HP blade servers. Stupid broke-assed blade server backplane. Stupid stupid stupid. I just checked up on the case a few minutes ago -- looks like nobody else has solved it either, so I don't feel too too stupid. Meanwhile, I've spent eight hours on the phone today and been either at work or in class for fourteen. My throat hurts and I'm feely very surly indeed. And tomorrow I have to take the bus up to the university and fight with them about my registration once again. RAAR! Bah.

"Without a Trace" completely kicked my ass tonight. I don't think that there was a happy moment in the entire show. I spent a good long time with tears in my eyes, and a good other part bawling my head off. Double shot of inoperable cancer victim and early stage of Alzheimer's patient. Lordy. Could I get some recommendations on the cleanest/best/fastest way to start doing web page design? I created a web page using a tool provided by Earthlink and it's okay, but now I'm ready to step it up. Someone suggested that I purchase MS FrontPage and try to find a local class. How does a 'newbie' get started? Thanks in advance.

Fri, Apr. 16th, 2004, 03:38 am the_obsession posting in java_dev: [Installing JWSDP 1.3 on WinME]
Am finally swallowing my pride and asking for help. =) I've installed JWSDP 1.3 on WinME, but when I click the startup.bat file in the bin folder, I get two lines of "Bad command or file name". I've made sure the paths to the bin folders of JWSDP, the SDK & Ant are in my msconfig file, and I've seen into the little memory problem which was expected to happen with WinME. And I am still unable to get the thing running. Right now I feel a big, painful kick coming, and I can't decide whether to aim it at my machine, or myself. I've got Tomcat working on Win2K machines before, and I don't remember ever getting this much crap. Any answers/suggestions? And ask not why WinME. =( Just in case no one can help me resolve this quickly, an alternative would be to recommend something else small I can run my JSPs & servlets off - emphasis on "small". [Edit(6.06am): Got fed up, partitioned drive, installed another OS. JWSDP is now working like a song. *viciously kicks WinME in the nuts*]

So, apparently NorWesCon was a wash when it came to distributing fantasy charms. The problem, I believe is that the vendors were pretty tepid on selling stuff that they didn't buy into. Today, we all packed up to meet with Dave at Wonder World. He was pretty enthusiastic, and had really great terms (Dave: "We'll keep 10% commission, so you'll make $9 to our $1 and we'll sell them for a week to see how well they do.") He showed our selection to a counter girl and she was very enthusiastic about the product. "I want..these, and these, and these and these, and I have a lot of girl gamer friends who'll want them." Ahhh, a fan of the product, you can't ask for a better salesperson. I hope this works out. I feel pretty optimistic that it will!
You know how you can make links underline when your cursor hovers over them? Well, for some reason, the underline [or even a colour change] won't work when I test my page in Internet Explorer, but it works in Netscape, Opera and Mozilla. I've checked my code, and I haven't found anything wrong with it, so anybody got any suggestions as to why it won't work? Thanks in advance :-)
Thu, Apr. 15th, 2004, 06:52 pm theda: So I had a fit as I was leaving work today:
Basically my boss came over to Liz and I and went over this cash incentive for production plan that they had established earlier this year. He covered what goal's we had hit and fallen short on in the first quarter. He covers how much we will be receiving. Then walks over to Maryam's desk and explains the same thing. My issues with this. She has only been there about 2 months. She is a part of another branches budgeting.. SHE DOES NO GODDAMNFUCKING WORK. I have been watching since my 17fuckingtransactions day, and I do between. 3 to 6 times as many transactions as she does every day. We are basically running a branch that requires 4 people with a staff of 3. It's take the chainsaw to work time. It's not much money, but it's money we're worked out asses off for, and she will get they rewards by both riding our coattails and kissing ass. I am trying to assuage my fury with the mighty piece o cheesecake, hopefully in a little while I will feel better.

Alright, after nearly two days of research, I'm finally giving up. I need help. I have the fortune of getting to work with Java at work finally, but I have the misfortune of also having to learn JSP, JNDI, JDBC and Tomcat... with a deadline. You may be seeing a bit of me in the next few months, but I promise I'll do my best to try to solve things on my own first. :) I currently have two questions: 1) What JDBC connection pooling implementations have people successfully used in the past? We're currently using org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSource, and it *nearly* does everything I want, namely: * It's got a factory so it can easily be instantiated from JNDI for application-wide access. * It can re-claim "abandoned" connections should .close() not be called on them, returning them to the pool. (I *know*. You should always close connections. Keep in mind this is being used in a development environment. I don't want to have to restart the server every ten minutes because something I'm testing keeps throwing exceptions in an unexpected place and not closing connections.) Things it doesn't do: * It doesn't re-claim abandoned connections until you're within 3 connections of reaching "maxActive". (So it never "evicts" (closes) abandoned connections. Well.. eventually it would, if you almost reach maxActive, but that could take a while.) 2) I like that javax.sql.DataSource can be used for pooled and non-pooled connections, and I can understand why its interface was specified. But can anyone explain why ConnectionPoolDataSource and PooledConnection interfaces are specified? Shouldn't it all just act like a DataSource and a Connection to the user? Someone could (more?) easily make a pooling DataSource without using any of those implementations on the back-end. Thanks for your help. I hope this isn't off-topic here. :) |
