THE FUTURE OF HEALTH CARE IN CANADA Wednesday, May 5, 2004. |
|
Federal Health Minister Pierre Pettigrew caused a ruckus by saying private health care delivery is not incompatible with the Canada Health Act. While Pettigrew later tried to backpedal, claiming he had been misunderstood, his comments have left many wondering just what the government's policy really is. Are public-private partnerships, two-tier health care and other such initiatives threatening the public health system? With an election call expected any time, a special town-hall edition of counterSpin debates the future of Canada’s Health Care System.

TRUTH, LIES AND THE WAR ON TERRORISM Wednesday, April 21, 2004. |
|
The 9/11 Commission in Washington continues its daily probing of the White
House, the CIA, the FBI and the Pentagon. While former White House terrorism
adviser Richard Clarke claims President Bush ignored the al-Qaeda threat
before 9/11, National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice insists there was
no “silver bullet” that could have prevented the attacks. With the purported
Iraqi weapons of mass destruction nowhere to be found and the occupation of
Iraq proving more disastrous every day, many feel the reasons for going to
war must again take centre stage. Truth, lies and the war on terrorism, from
9/11 to WMD and Iraq, counterSpin debates what the White House knew and when
they knew it.
With special guest Greg Palast, author of the New York Times bestseller, The
Best Democracy Money Can Buy. Palast also writes for Britain's Observer and
Guardian newspapers, and is an investigative reporter for BBC Television's
Newsnight.

SOUTH AFRICA – TEN YEARS AFTER THE END OF APARTHEID Wednesday, April 14, 2004. |
|
South Africans are heading to the polls this week, the third democratic
election since the end of Apartheid 10 years ago. In April 1994, Nelson
Mandela’s African National Congress, after decades of struggle against white
minority rule and racial segregation, opened a new chapter in the history of
South Africa. The ANC promised an end to the social and economic divide
rooted in more than 40 years of extreme segregation and violence. But ten
years later, what has the ANC accomplished? Critics say that an apartheid
based on race has been replaced by an apartheid based on class. And that
South Africa now has the dubious honour of being one of the most unequal
societies in the world. Others say that the ANC inherited a heavily
entrenched divide that is not easy to overcome - and that both patience and
time are needed. On the tenth anniversary of the end of Apartheid,
counterSpin debates the true legacy of the ANC and the future of South Africa.
