John Ross explains why we fight warsWe fight wars not to have peace, but to have a peace worth having. Slavery is peace. Tyranny is peace. For that matter, genocide is peace when you get right down to it. The historical consequences of a philosophy predicated on the notion of "no war at any cost" are families flying to the Super Bowl accompanied by three or four trusted slaves and a Europe devoid of a single living Jew.
It would be nice if there were a way around this. History, not merely my opinion, shows us that there is not. If all you are willing to do is think happy thoughts, then those are the consequences. If you want justice, and freedom, and safety, and prosperity, then sometimes you have to fight for them.

This day is called the feast of Crispian:
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when the day is named,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian:'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars.
And say 'These wounds I had on Crispin's day.'
Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember with advantages
What feats he did that day: then shall our names.
Familiar in his mouth as household words
Harry the king, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester,
Be in their flowing cups freshly remember'd.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remember'd;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

I've become so fascinated with this question that I plan to write a book answering why communism's legacy -- marked by widespread poverty and unprecedented mass death (an estimated 100 million people were killed under Marxist regimes) -- is far less known and taught compared with Nazism's history.

Hypocrisy from the left. It's as natural to them as breathing. They complain non-stop if a Republican President mentions God, but had no problem with Bill Clinton's church front photo ops, with the Bible he was carrying getting bigger and bigger as he got into more trouble. Having the "Reverend" Jesse Jackson over to provide "counseling" was OK in their book too.
They didn't have any problems with the religious beliefs of these democrat Presidents either:
"And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe -- the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God." -- President John Kennedy's inaugural address on Jan. 20, 1961.
"No greater thing could come to our land today than a revival of the spirit of religion — a revival that would sweep through the homes of the nation and stir the hearts of men and women of all faiths to a reassertion of their belief in God and their dedication to His will for themselves and for their world." -- Franklin D. Roosevelt

Money quote:BW&BK;: "This next question is controversial so I'm letting you know before we proceed. Some political analysts have articulated the view that what happened on September 11 was justified due to America's presence in the Middle East, specifically Saudi Arabia. Some political analysts view it as retaliation for what the US has done in the Middle East in the past. As a Canadian, I'm interested in hearing what you have to say about this view that's been put forth by analysts."
JS: "No, it wasn't justified. Not at all. And anybody who says so needs to have their fuckin' head examined."
BW&BK;: "Do you think 9/11 will be viewed as the first event in the US empire's decline and fall?"
JS: "No. This is not an empire, first of all. If the United States was an empire, your country would be our 51st state."
BW&BK;: "I understand."
No he doesn't understand. Read the whole thing. Parts of it are marvelous.

Ann Coulter raises some good points:The terrorist "stronghold" of Karbala was abandoned last week by Islamic crazies loyal to cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, who slunk away when it became clear that no one supported them. Iraqis living in Karbala had recently distributed fliers asking the rebels to please leave, further underscoring one of the principal remaining problems in Iraq – the desperate need for more Kinko's outlets. Last weekend, our troops patrolled this rebel "stronghold" without a shot being fired.
The entire Kurdish region – one-third of the country – is patrolled by about 300 American troops, which is fewer than it takes to patrol the Kennedy compound in Palm Beach on Easter weekends.

Isn't this the "State" butting into the "Church's" affairs? It is completely within the Church's right to withhold the sacraments to anyone the Church leaders deem unworthy.

Somebody who hasn't been paying attention to how the far left operates says the following about hardcore Anti-Semitism at Berkely:Weinberg graduates this month as a student whose days at Cal were marked by what he calls "pinnacles of horror," in the pinched tone of a man betrayed. He remembers pro-Palestinian protesters insisting that Israeli border crossings are as bad as Nazi death camps. He remembers the glass front door of Berkeley's Hillel building -- where he attends Friday night services -- shattered by a cinderblock, with the message FUCK JEWS scrawled nearby. He remembers the spray-painted swastikas discovered one Monday morning last September on the walls of four lecture rooms in LeConte Hall accompanied by the chilling bilingual message, "Die, Juden. " . . .
Such anti-Semitism has always seemed the sinister province of fascists and neo-Nazis, Spanish Inquisitors and tattooed skinheads. How topsy-turvy, then, to discover that some of the most virulent anti-Semitism in America today seethes amid the multicultural ferment of American college campuses. And at UC Berkeley, which owes as much of its allure to radical rhetoric as to academic excellence, it thrives.
Berkely, the poster child for far left liberal democrat activism still mirrors the heart and soul of that movement.
Why American Jews support democrats (including their token Klansman in the Senate) is being coming harder and harder to understand.

That was true 11 years ago when I led the inspections there. It is no less true today -- even after the seemingly important discovery on Thursday of a dozen empty short-range missile warheads left over from the 1980s.
The only job the inspectors can expect to accomplish is confirming whether Iraq has voluntarily disarmed. That is not a task that need take months more. And last week's cache is irrelevant in answering that question, regardless of the U.N.'s final determination. That's because the answer is already clear: Iraqi is in breach of U.N. demands that it dismantle its weapons of mass destruction.

Spanish troops returning from Iraq say, "We let our allies down."
Quotes from the troops:"We left our coalition colleagues behind and abandoned the local people, who are living in wretched conditions."
"We felt used and let down by the politicians. Zapatero made the move purely for his own popularity."
"He did not address us and the king did not come. No thanks were given. There was no encouragement for the job we did," said Sgt García. "It was a celebration for Mr Zapatero."
"I would not want to exaggerate but it is a little like the American troops returning from Vietnam. There were no thanks. You came back and you could feel the indifference."

Senator Zell Miller, a thinking man's democrat, speaks out on the ultra-left wing, liberal John Kerry.
The learned Senator Miller sums up the Brahmin Kerry quite well:"Look, John Kerry couldn't find Main Street with both hands, You can't make a chicken swim and you can't make John Kerry anything but an out-of-touch ultraliberal from Taxachusetts."
"With John Kerry on national security, it's vacillate, retreat and turn over to the U.N.
With John Kerry on domestic policy, it's tax, spend and redistribute income."

Here are more details.
Perhaps the liberal Senator Kerry should take a high road page from former Senator Dole and resign.
The Wall Street Journal sums up the argument well:There's an easy solution: Kerry should quit the Senate, as Bob Dole did in June 1996. This not only would allow the appointment of a full-time replacement but also would demonstrate Kerry's own confidence in his presidential campaign, possibly giving a boost to his party's morale.

Err American having problems (no surprise there). From the Inside Politics column of the Washington Times:Air America has shut its sales offices in Los Angeles and Chicago and is recasting its business plan, the network's president said Wednesday as troubles beset the liberal talk-show network.
With Air America not broadcasting in those two cities after a financial dispute in April, network President Jon Sinton said, "There's not much sense in having sales offices in cities where you don't control a station."
About 15 to 20 people were laid off in the closing of the sales offices, the latest sign of problems for Air America, launched on March 31 as a liberal alternative to the country's predominantly conservative talk-show culture led by Rush Limbaugh.
Since it started, Chairman Evan Cohen, Vice Chairman Rex Sorensen and head of programing David Logan have left while co-founder Mark Walsh has stepped down as chief executive to take a smaller role in the organization, Reuters news agency reports.

In Answer To Certain Paranoid Rantings Of Liberals:If Conservatives dealt with the adherents of Libralisme Moderne the way the Left has dealt with humans in general whenever the Left has obtained unrestrained power, there wouldn't be any Liberals left standing. Of the universities and the urban centers of Liberalism there would be nothing left but smoking ruins, and there would mass graves from coast to coast.
For the left to admit that there is a better, morally superior, way to deal with political disagreement would in effect be an act of self-condemnation.
I would expect Hell to freeze over before that happens.

Instead, I got 10 hours of rancid venom directed at the President, Rumsfeld, Rush Limbaugh, the Catholic Church and anyone else the hosts felt like slamming. If you're a card-carrying lib who likes crude sex jokes and a cartoonish echo chamber, Air America is for you.
...
During a day of torture by radio, I heard ads for Hewlett-Packard, Greyhound and, especially, General Motors. I asked GM why it appeared in such shows.
Ryndee Carney, GM's manager of marketing communications, said the ads were wrongly picked up from an earlier deal with WLIB. She said the station was ordered to "cease and desist" yesterday, and added: "GM will not advertise on any Air America affiliates."

Mr. Reynolds has still more on UNSCAM:We have every confidence Mr. Volcker will lead a thorough investigation, but the public should not be asked to take it on faith that he will be given access to all information and rely on his interpretation alone. As the above-quoted contract makes clear, the Secretary-General has the authority to waive all these confidentiality agreements. The fact that Kofi Annan has chosen instead to pursue a campaign of legal intimidation is a pretty good indication that he intends as much of a whitewash as he can get away with. . . .

Larry Miller, making damn good sense. Here is a sample, but read the whole thing:Ah, but you see, half measures are, in fact, exactly what Mr. Annan and the United Nations want, because that's the way they work. Remember, this is the organization that literally and figuratively pulled its trucks over to the side of the road in Rwanda and let the jeeps full of machete-wielding murderers roll from town to town until they had hacked up all the screaming people they could find. Apparently, the U.N. follows some goofy Star Trek Prime Directive of "Never get involved."
Hey, bonehead, the only reason there ought to be a United Nations in the first place is so that you do get involved, so that every so often you put your baby blue helmets in between the bad guys and the screaming people before they get chopped up. That's the reason you have such a big, tall, pretty building in Manhattan, you know, not to go to cocktail parties on the Upper East Side and chat up the local, needy blondes.

Because "freedom of speech" is about being able to say what you wish without fearing *imprisonment* or *execution* or some lesser form of *legal* punishment. Freedom of speech isn't about being able to make money off what you say, or being able to rely on corporate America to spread your message for you.
