Tests to uproot Windows passwords begin - News - ZDNet - "Microsoft and RSA Security on Wednesday started beta testing a product designed to phase out the use of traditional passwords and replace them with automatically generated passwords from a SecurID token.
SecurID is one of the most popular two-factor authentication systems and is already used by many large enterprises. The token is about the size of a matchbox and generates a new six-digit code every minute. "

Good video demo of some of the new features included in SP2.  Kind of looks more like a version update to me.

A little birdy writes "Less than a month after Beta 1 was released, Mono Beta 2 has been released. See the Release Notes, or go directly to the download page. It includes a C# compiler, an implementation of the Common Language Infrastructure and two stacks of APIs: a Unix, Linux, GNOME, Mono stack for APIs that takes the most advantage of your Unix server and desktop and a set of APIs compatible with the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 that provides support for ASP.NET (web services and web forms), ADO.NET and many other components." And in a related story: darthcamaro writes "The drive to develop a FOSS implementation of Microsoft's .NET framework by DotGNU and Novell's Mono project is being painted as a contest between the Free and Open Source communities in an article on internetnews.com. The article details the running argument between DotGNU's Norbert Bello and Mono's Miguel de Icaza on the issues of commercial involvement, software patents and all the 'religious' stuff that the Free software community holds against the open source community."

Good news, but one wonders how they will reconcile feeds with their online subscription?  While it would be worthwhile to get a headline feed, nothing on the site is available for free.  Feeds would be of real use only to subscribers.

Really Simple Syndication: "Dave, how I can explain to my large media corporation higher-ups why it's not a bad thing that they lose traffic if their readers are using our RSS feeds instead of visiting the site?" [Scripting News]

This piece brings up an interesting point about RSS that a lot of folks don't get: it is a good tool for driving traffic to your site.  At first glance, many folks assume that everything in a given post/article/story would be included in the feed and so by subscribing to the feed, visitors to the site would be lost.  But there is no real reason to put all of the info into the feed.  Use the title, a link to the piece and a short synopsis (or the first 100 characters) to fill the feed.  Then subscribers to the feed are more likely to follow a link about something that interests them.  The site ends up wiht a fair greater reach than it had before.

"CNet News.com is testing a news service that automatically generates lists of news stories either about specific firms or popular topics. The list of companies stretches from 3Com to Yahoo, while topics range from Application Integration to Wireless. The stories are drawn from the usual sources -- such as eWeek and Internetnews.com, Reuters and Yahoo News -- with CNet stories strongly featured. The New York Times and Business Week also creep in. If you are a CNet reader, it is already a useful way of checking to see if you have missed anything. It could be expanded into something really good."

Iphtashu Fitz writes "Damon Toal-Rossi of Iowa City, Iowa had enough of the high price of gasoline, so it didn't take too much for his friend to talk him into switching to biodiesel, an alternative fuel based on soy or vegetable oil. But after a few months of driving 10 miles to a biodiesel fuel station he decided it was time to start brewing his own. It didn't take him long to find a recipe for biodiesel, and with used cooking oil that he gets for free from a nearby restaurant, he figures he's now getting 44 miles per gallon out of his diesel powered VW Golf and only paying 41 cents a gallon. According to the National Biodiesel Board the number of biodiesel stations in the US rose by 50% last year (to a whopping 200). The president of the American Soybean Association claims biodiesel has almost the same amount of energy as petroleum-based diesel, but cleans an engine's fuel injectors and cuts down on the number of required oil changes. Perhaps these are some of the reasons why diesel powered cars are making a comeback in the US."

The museum will adjoin the Experience Music Project in the very odd Frank Gehry-designed building near downtown Seattle. Allen, a life-long SF fan, has been working on the project for a few years, and it will probably be the same sort of sensory extravaganza as the EMP. The e-mail promises "exclusive access" for Charter Members, including the chance to go to an pre-launch tour and party, a t-shirt, and a limited-edition lapel pin. There are many levels of membership, from "Terran" ($40), through "Hive Mind" ($75), "Replicant" ($500), all the way to "Immortal" ($10,000). It's hard to say just how this will turn out, but with the likes of Greg Bear and Forry Ackerman as advisors, and some interesting ideas, it might be okay."
