Erdogan: Committed to full democracy

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey anticipated to get a date from the European Union in December for the start of accession talks but even if the EU snubbed Turkey again, his government would rename the Copenhagen political criteria as "Ankara criteria" and move on its reform drive.

Time for reckoning the YOK law

The government will make its mind up on the issue of the Higher Education Board (YOK) bill on Monday, which was vetoed by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer on Friday. It will either try to pass the law for the second time through Parliament or decide to postpone the issue for now. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed the matter first during the Cabinet meeting and then the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Central Executive Council (MYK) meeting last night. The government's decision will be finalized after today's AK Party parliamentary group meeting.

Saudis hunting al-Qaeda gunmen

Saudi forces combed the kingdom on Monday for suspected al-Qaeda militants who killed 22 civilians and took dozens of foreigners hostage in a daring attack on its globally vital oil industry.
