All those of you who are old enough to remember media reporting on the last days of Josip Broz Tito might remember how long it took him to "officially die" in 1980 in a hospital in Ljubljana. Being aware but also afraid of what might follow after his death, the Jugoslav nomenklatura (by the way: perfectly described by Milovan Djilas in his book "The Fall of the New Class") would not let him die until political action was taken to ensure the existence of this country. Milosevic was one of them. Despite all the tragic events in Ex-Jugoslavia and maybe because there is a strong need to go back to "normalization", Titos remebrance has in the meantime become a very special thing in the region. I finally came across a homepage edited by two former students from Ljubljana university titled titoville. "It started out as a joke but suddenly we found ourselves deluged with messages from people all over the former Jugoslavia. We touched something very deep.", the webmasters explained to a reporter of the New York Times in 1997. Now, in 2004, this homepage is still online with more than 900.000 visits. For all interested in Southeastern Europe, its worth a visit!
Ah, that's where it comes from: I was surprised to see so many Tito-devotional articles at the fleamarket in Ljubljana. (Plus old missiles and Nazi-stuff) Posted by novala | June 2, 2004 08:33 PM Post a Comment
