Well, since I've been commenting today I really should introduce myself.
I've been writing all my life; when I was a kid my friends and I used to play 'school' wherein we would write and grade each other's essays. I started writing original fiction as a teen, although it was very bad.
I've been writing fanfic for about five years now, starting in Buffy, then working my way through Smallville, The West Wing, and two Stargates.
Over the past five years I've been writing short stories, mostly science fiction. My first rejection slip, from Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, is one of my most treasured possessions. I've been rejected by the best, but at least they've heard of me.
Last November I wrote a NaNovel, which wasn't SF, surprisingly enough. I am, however, rewriting it to be SF, because I didn't think the characters have enough conflict in their enclosed little world.
I've also written several spec scripts for television and am working on two original pilots, although I haven't been sending anything out.
I like commas a little too much.

I'm pretty sure I've never introduced myself on here, so - hi! I'm a graduate student; in my fannish life, I write HP and occasional bits of ST:DS9, at a glacially slow pace. In my non-fannish writing, I've got one completed (and edited!) YA fantasy novel and two partial non-YA fantasy-if-you-squint novels, one of which I'm currently working on finishing. I also dabble in poetry. I've not been paid for my fiction (or poems, though that might go without saying), I don't have an agent, I need to find one, and just as soon as I get a spare minute I'll start looking!
I love the idea of this community, because it feels like writing novels is such a slow and lonely business. In fandom, there's a much larger built-in audience, and sometimes you even get feedback; with novels, I often find toiling along with very little reader response to be rather tougher on the ol' motivation. It'd be nice to have a place for advice on finding agents, venting about the process, sharing, and talking about the transition/sliding scale between fanfic and profic.
Here's an open question: I'm curious to know how much you feel your fannish writing & fannish characters have influenced your original writing & characters, and in what ways?

Subject: | Re-Intro and a Question on Writer's Market |
Security: | Public |
Following in the virtual footsteps of vampiresetsuna who originally postedhere, here's a re-introduction, plus a bonus question!
I've been a member a long time, but haven't posted much. I'm currently doing a little editting to , and then trying to get published, one childrens book (young reader level) and starting work on a novel fantasy/historical-fiction(medieval) story which would probably be marketted to young adults (something Secret of Nihm or the later HP book reading level). I've had some small things published in magazines and newspapers (articles, illustrations, cartoons) but no books yet. I've worked in chicago newspapers and small circulation magazine publishing so I've a little background there. Oh! I can't post a proper intro here without mentioning that I write HP fanfic but can't make any money at that of course (although i don't like to think of book writing as "after fanfic" My original work is strongly based on history, myths and legends- but it feels the same to me as writing fanfic, except that one I can be paid for and the other I can't)
Now for my QUESTION : I have the writer's market books. I'm wondering what the WEBSITE they have is like. Is it the same information but digital (in which case, I prefer to work from the book) or is there a lot of material there I couldn't find in the books? I'm not clear on what the website offers and if its worth it to me or not.
(sushi, I know you were looking, but I know you're busy too, so write me whenever you have to, *s*)

I was just thinking, you know, the community is pretty quiet, and there are a lot of us here, who'd probably like to talk about writing stuff!! Sadly it rather seems that most writing people are also rather quiet, and writing is generally a by-yourself activity (seriously, when's the last time you've been to a writer's keg party? Loud classical music, lots of typwriters, a fountian of thesarus words), so since we're all here and interested, we should get some stuff going on!
We should reintroduce ourselves, and talk more about some of the projects we're working on! Maybe we could also do some kind of paragraph of the week challenges (I've got a book of developing writing things that are REALLY cool), and other writing exersizes where we could write together but only on our own plots. If anyone else is game, I'll post one in a few days!
I'll start: I'm a graduate student, and I'm working on two novels right now; one is a piece of fiction very close to being finished, and the other is a children's novel. Both are fantasy, magic and ghost type stories. I've not had much time to write lately, and need to get back into gear! I've been working on the first one for about three years; it's on the fourth re-write, and I think that I finally like the way that the story is turning out! I'm also glad to read/edit for others, if anyone needs a beta!

Hello All!
Having stumbled across this LJ I thought I'd join and come along to share the fun.
I have been writing fanfiction for about a year, exclusively in the Harry Potter fandom having been attacked by a plot bunny that just wouldn't let go. Although I enjoy fanfiction I must admit I find it very difficult to write anything longer than 5000 words, I can't seem to absorb myself into the characters/universe as well as I can my own creations. I doubt I could read fanficiton based on my own creations (You ever know it might happen -LOL) as I'd get terribly twitchy about people playing with my babies... I wonder if published authors feel the same - and not just about the loss of royalties?
When I was younger I wrote copiously (and proabably a lot of drivel) but once at uni and embroiled in a science degree it sort of dried up. Last February (2004) the flood gates opened (oh dear I'm already using cliches) and now I am trying to find an agent for my first novel. By writing fanfiction, using a decent beta and receiving critic I re-polished my writing skills and found my long forgotten grammar
So hello to everyone out there, I up for doing a bit of critic, editoring... I'm looking forward to being around a load of like minded people
Hel

Awhile back, I posted a story here called 'A Timely Tale.' I received several kind and very helpful comments on it, so I thought I'd hop back over and let you know that it won first place (for the adult age division) in the Santa Cruz Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale competition. It goes on now to be entered in the international version of the contest, based in Sestri, Italy.
I'm immensely excited. It's the first (and so far only) non-fanfic piece that I've sent out into the world, and I'm tickled pink. Forgive the boasting!

I have been a part of this community for a little while, reading all the posts - and I have to say that what many of you are doing is wonderful and inspiring.
Fanfic is such a fun writing experience. You get to expand on ideas from a show or book you have loved, you get to push the boundaries of an existing idea, or characterization, you get to take the show or book into areas that at times is more exciting and sometimes more believable than the original concept.
So - yep - I love fanfic. I have been writing it for years. Across many different fandoms and books. Making the break from that to construct your own universe is harder. As many of you know. Creating the foundations so that the characters and world is well established in your own mind takes work. But once that is achieved, then writing in that new universe can be even more rewarding and fun than playing in an established media world.
For those working on this - I wish you all the best of every success.
My only work outside of fanfiction has been 'The Heart of Lichien'. Book one in a four part series. For those interested, please go ( here )

Hello everyone,
I'm 21, and have been a fanfic writer for about five years in various anime fandoms, mostly under the pen name Occurs, though I wrote some GW fic as Keito many many years ago. I've always loved to write, and fanfiction seemed like an easy and fun way to practice my storytelling skills...it was writing with no pressure, no deadlines, nothing business-like to detract from the fun, and nearly instant (and mostly positive) feedback from communities and websites. I did occasionally come up with original ideas, but I would always put them on the backburner and go back to fandom. It was actually during this past nanowrimo that I realized I could actually do something with my original ideas. I was a nano winner, and though that novel now sits abandoned as a loving testament to how much crap I can produce when pushed for it, I have since started another novel and written several short stories. My first published work is slated for print in an upcoming anthology from Haworth press. I'd like to find more online writing buddies to swap critiques, share writing tips, and act as sounding boards for ideas. I hope to meet fun people here!

I've been lurking for a while, it seems about time to introduce myself. My name's Sann, but in fandom, I used to be known as Noxy or Noctiluca.
It really is kind of hard to move on from fan fic to original fic, innit? I'd already written tons of original fic before I started to write fan fic, but once I'd started, I wrote nothing *but* fan fic for about five years. My fandoms were BtVS, Angel:tS, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter. Eventually, almost by accident, if you will, I started to write an original char slash series called Triangle (which you can find on my website if you're interested). The overwhelming response it got was what ultimately convinced me to leave fan fic behind and try my luck as a professional writer. I'm currently working on a novel, and am loving and hating it, as you do. ;-)
Anyway, nice to meet you all. How many published writers do we have here? And how many of you are working on novels?

I'm just wondering how can a person who's writing in fan fiction move on to original writing? Since I really love the characters in the fandom I write, I can't seem to enjoy writing original stories. Some of the things I'm trying to combat is doing a daily exercises in my LJ that are short, but to get things flowing. Another thing I'm doing is writing a short story. Though, I am in the process of writing a novel, but I realized that it is a too big of a leap for original writing and decided to put it on a back burner. Yet, I still don't have a feeling for writing originals. It must be the characters that I'm writing, or the plot. Some of you may have combatted (is that a word?) this type of problem, so I'm hoping that I would see if there's any tips... ^^; Thanks so much!

Romance writers are deadly serious about their writing. They sweat and bleed, swear and plead as they birth page after page after page and then somehow (this part's magic -- I can't explain it if you haven't experienced it for yourself) manage to pull it all together and produce a deeply moving love story. ~A Writer
I’ve been writing since I was a child, but recently I have been following up a dream of mine to becoming a published author. To achieve this goal, however, I realize there are a lot of little things that make up the big picture. Creating a tangible plot, forming believable characters, and having the stamina to finish what has been started.
Although I belong to a number of critique groups for various genres ( _blueberrybagel is one I formed for original fiction of any genre), I noticed there really isn’t any for romance writers of any type…thus the reason for joining forces with ( bunnyblood to form one using bodice_ripper as a place for writers and even nonwriters who want to discuss gender issues. If romance is something you like to write, hope you may one day publish, and would like to be part of a critique circle while discussing the aspects of writing, please join.

I just wrote a story for a Writers' Journal contest, only to discover that the deadline was last week. *facepalm* Do'ohhhh....
I have decided to post the story here, even though I don't think it's very good...any constructive criticizms are very welcome! The next one I'll be entering is in two months, so I'll have plenty of time to get the kinks out of it by then (it'll be a different story) For submission guidelines for this particular 'entry', go here">

I’m trying to plan a short romance series (four books total) that centers around the love lives of some characters. I decided to take one of my plots (A Ladder to the Moon) and put it in book one of the series (Wishing You Were…). Problem: Ladder to the Moon is written in first person, but to follow various characters, the series should be in third person. I’m not sure LttM will be as good/interesting in the third person and I’ve never seen a series where some of the books are in first pov and others in third (I might as well put one in second just for the hell of it :/).
Advice anyone?

In three words: Yes, it's possible.
It's a case of working your butt off, getting used to rejection, and celebrating and then getting straight back to work when one of your pieces is finally accepted. Yes, I speak from experience. My writing career to date, not including unpublished novels, includes:
One ghostwritten novel, for which I was woefully underpaid.
One short story, my first sale under my own name, due for publication next month in an anthology from Torquere Press.
A whole stack of rejection slips that progressively get more encouraging. (When an editor takes the time to tell you why something was rejected, you've got the start of something good.)
General residency at the Writer's Colony at Dairy Hollow for 2005. I'd applied for the Notorious Fellowship, but a general residency is more versatile by way of time period and isn't that much easier to get. The colony takes about fifty people a year, both writers and musicians; eight at this time are Fellowship recipients. The purpose of going is to spend a period of time, anywhere from two weeks to three months, almost completely isolated from everyday life in order to write.
While I've been writing seriously for about fifteen years, my only real success before late last year was in fanfiction. There's been a lot of very sudden payoff in a short period of time (ie, less than three months, the sale and the residency). I'm kinda hoping the trend will continue. I've got a novel-in-progress to hopefully sell to Torquere, and a fantasy series that I want an agent for. (May the publishing gods smile upon me should the words "auction" or "HarperCollins" arise. *sweats*) The business side of things is coming slowly. It'll arrive. I hope. Eesh.
And on that note, I've got a novel to finish before the end of the month. TTFN! :)

Found this on writers_guild, sounds like fun to me!
A few months ago, I had a dream in which LiveJournal and everyone on it went completely nuts for a day. The entire world had turned upside-down and inside-out and nobody was their normal self anymore. And it was such a good read, that I think it should happen for real.
January 27th is the birthday of Lewis Carroll, author of ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND. Alice fell down a rabbit hole into a place where everything had changed and none of the rules could be counted on to apply anymore. I say, let's do the same: January 27th, 2005 should be the First Annual LiveJournal Rabbit Hole Day. When you post on that Thursday, instead of the normal daily life and work and news and politics, write about the strange new world you have found yourself in for the day, with its strange new life and work and news and politics. Are your pets talking back at you now? Has your child suddenly grown to full adulthood? Does everyone at work think you're someone else now? Did Bush step down from the White House to become a pro-circuit tap-dancer? Did Zoroastrian missionaries show up on your doorstep with literature in 3-D? Have you been placed under house arrest by bizarre insectoid women wielding clubs made of lunchmeat?
Let's have a day where nobody's life makes sense anymore, where any random LJ you click on will bring you some strange new tale. Let's all fall down the Rabbit Hole for 24 hours and see what's there. It will be beautiful.
For consideration: this only works if you spread the word, of course, but three and a half weeks is forever in LJ Meme Time.
Remember January 27th! Post this in your journals!

Hihihi. I'm new here, in the way that I haven't posted yet *is deflowered* & was wondering - rather than those who are struggling with the transition between fan&original;, has anyone crossed over successfully? Because I have this short story [about 27oo] that, imho, is pretty good and edited as far as I can edit... And I have no bloody idea what to do with it now. >__>
Biscuit Publishing have a competition I thought about entering [providing I can, you know, write other stuff] but aside from competitions - what does one do with a short story?
I'm in the UK, so I appreciate that there may be some UK/US differences [for a change], but has anyone any suggestions? I'm trying to start off the New Year right, here. *laughs*
Thanks a heap. :D

Hello, everyone.
Whoever made this community is a genius - I've been writing fanfiction for five years, and have been trying to write original fiction for about three years now. It's harder than I thought it would be - whenever I try to outline a new plot or character, I always stop halfway through because it all turns into fanfiction. Sometimes good fanfiction, but fanfiction nonetheless.
Truthfully, I'm probably a much better editor than I am a writer, though I love writing too. Problem is, I don't really have that much stuff to edit, other than my own stuff (which gets a little boring after a while). I would love to have the chance to edit some new material, as well as to have my own work be looked at. Up until now, I've never really been brave enough to let anyone other than my closer friends read my work, but I do want to get something published.
My current project is editing my NaNo (though I should probably finish it first). There's only so much self-editing can do, though, and I'd love some more feedback.
I also write a lot of poetry, and published one poem when I was in fifth grade (I'm in high school now). Is this community for poetry as well as novels and short stories and the like?
Anyway, I'm glad I found this. Hope to start editing soon...

Hey everyone! Greetings from yet another newbie!
Wow, it sounds like this is just the place for me. I was recently temporarily blocked by fanfiction.net thanks to my uploading a humorous script based on Pirates of the Caribbean (I uploaded it long before the "no scripts allowed" rule came into effect, but they got me anyway. Oh, well.), so I thought I'd use all my sudden free time to create a "writing journal" and find a few communities of like-minded weirdos. *waves* Greetings, earthlings!
And yes, I'll confess, I also wanted to advertise a bit for the first story I posted over on my journal; I was hoping a few people would buzz over and read through it. I could use some suggestions. Thanks! (The story is called "Roses" and is a vampire story.)
