legion of doom cited for city code violations >> my house needs your help >> urgent!! |
[05 Jan 2005|05:04pm] |
repost from roomie/doomie BP on friendster
The Legion of Doom, the longest running DIY show space in Columbus, Ohio and a keystone in the punk community for many, many years (and my home) needs your help.
The city of Columbus just hit us with a bunch of Code violations that we have to fix within 30 days. We are setting this Saturday as the day to work on a bunch of different things (painting, wood work, roofing). Becca and I are going to make a bunch of food for people who come out to help. We are probably going to have some shows to raise money for construction supplies (we may have to build a new porch entirely, so that could get expensive). I think the first benefit show will be at High 5 on January 18th. get in touch if your band can play.
the worst case scenario is that the city and Campus Partners put pressure on our landlord to get rid of the house, so that's why we want to hit this problem quickly and decisively and let him know we are taking care of it so he doesn't need to worry about it. (Wes, please try to keep him from freaking out.)
This matters a lot to me. This is my home.
idunno. I'm trying not to lose it. if anyone has any ideas about any of this, let me know.

Hello everyone. It is Ryan.
As unusual as it might sound, I am playing a solo set at Bernie's tonight for the "Rodney Riffle Head Stone Fund." I will explain what the benefit is for in just a second... those who just want the quick information:
Ryan will be playing at 9PM @ Bernie's (1896 N High St) on Friday, December 3. The line-up is: Ryan Vile (myself, singer from The Reacharounds), Denver (singer from Little Orphan Anarchy), The Bogtrodders, Popeye Cons, Necropolis, The F.G.D.'s, members of Vinnie!, Dirt Farmers, and Scab Head. (Yes thats a whole lot of bands).
We are asking for a $1-$5 donation at the door to get in. Rum & Cokes are $1 before 9PM.
As for the benefit itself. Rodney Riffle was a friend and a co-worker of mine at Bernie's. He died unexpectedly on November 2. He was one of the most amazing song writers in the city. He had played in several bands including Vinnie!, Whisky Cannonball, Dirt Farmers, and his last band Scab Head.
There will be Pre-release copies of his EP with Scab Head for $2.
The goal is to raise one thousand dollars for Rodney's headstone. So far $400 has been raised. Tonight's show will be the main drive to get the rest.
I am hoping to have some copies of my own demo there (ZERO DAY RELEASE) but I need to finish it today, so I make no promises.
I hope to see you at the show!
-Ryan Vile

a bitch and stitch proposal, ladies. |
[05 Nov 2004|03:06pm] |
It is really important that we as females begin to regain control of our bodies. With abortions in the midst of being outlawed there is no better time than now to show restistance against these big bad corporations who think that they need to hide our bodies natural functions in fear of offending some man. Because of the feminine hygienes pervasive presence and coercive nature, it is difficult to imagine life without popping our tampons or throwing out our bloody plastic pads each month. Multi-national giants have successfully saturated the "American" "Canadian" and "European" markets that it has become a given that a girl graduates into womanhood with the decision of what company she chooses as her "feminine protection." Not only are they designed to absorb your monthly flow, they also absorb all your other good juices that keep your little lady ecosystem healthy and in check.
Disposable protection only protects the mainstream feminine hygiene industry's profits, not our bodies. These corporations are not primarily concerned with the serious environmental ramifications, the health implications or the economic impact on women's lives. Instead, major companies make money off of the promotion of shame, secrecy and the "inconvenience" of our bodies.
Each time we throw away another tampon we uphold an economic system that heralds waste. They fill our landfill sites. They deplete our pockets. They trash our natural resources. They use toxic chemicals. They think we should smell like baby powder. They feed corporate power. They colonize cultures. They monopolize shelf space. Hell, they own most of the world! They make terrible commercials. They uphold racist ideologies. They pathologize our mood swings. They penetrate our school systems. They instruct us not to know our bodies. They choke our wildlife. They pretend to be sterile. They lie on their packages. They can cause cancer. They have global marketing schemes to colonize all womens' bodies. Basically, they are dirty business.
The only thing big business cares about is "business as usual" so our resistance must attack business as usual, and "business as usual" for a womens hygeine company is selling us their harmful NONBIODEGRADABLE plastics. It is time we take our health into our own hands. Our resistance is easy, its what our mothers and grandmothers and every other women on earth, and most of the women still do today, they made their own pads.
so why dont we get together and begin taking back our bodies, and resisting these terrible corporations who already exploit us so much? anyone interested?
my apartment is available. i have 2 electric sewing machines, but one is portable. fabric is always available. we have the resources.

Please take a photo ID and/or a utility bill with your name and address on it, just in case anyone challenges your registration.
If you don't know where your polling place is, here's a comprehensive list
If you have any troubles voting CALL toll Free 1-866-OUR-VOTE (1-866-687-8683).
It's been said that Ohio is the swing state this year. People are coming in from all over the country, from safe states, to volunteer and protect your right to vote. I've said that, in large federal elections, individual votes don't really matter. This year, I'm eating my words. Every vote matters.
