Weekend Edition May 15 / 16, 2004 Lessons of War By DAVID KRIEGER The war is a failure. There were no weapons of mass destruction. The war is an utter failure. We have become what we say we hate. Our young men and women torture and humiliate the prisoners. They look at the camera and smile. They flash the victory sign. They look so innocent standing in front of the naked and stacked Iraqis. The war is a failure. This perversity cannot be blamed on Saddam. Democracy at home declines. No money for schools. The war sucks up our treasure, our democracy and our decency. No one takes responsibility. The war is a failure. American soldiers are dying for a lie. Iraqi civilians are dying for a lie. There were no weapons of mass destruction. American soldiers torture and humiliate the prisoners while smiling for the camera. The war is a failure. One year after the president dressed up like a soldier, he continues to torture our belief in our decency. He speaks behind closed doors to the 9/11 Commission. The president is a coward. America is losing its liberties and its bearings. The war is a failure. The vice-president holds the president's hand when he testifies behind closed doors. He is also a coward. They are weapons of mass destruction, hidden behind closed doors. The war is a failure. We have become what we say we hate. We are the torturers. We can do better by our children.
