What's Happening on Sunday, June 6, 2004?

The President and Mrs. Bush travel to Normandy, France for the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings. They will pay their respects at the American Cemetery, where the President will deliver remarks. The President and Mrs. Bush will then participate in a multinational lunch and ceremony commemorating this historic anniversary. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the President and Mrs. Bush will depart for Sea Island, Georgia, where they will host the 2004 G8 Summit.

Did you know? At dawn on June 6, 1944, American, British, and Canadian troops came ashore at beaches in Normandy code-named Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. The landings met heavy resistance from German coastal batteries, but by day's end, 155,000 Allied troops had landed in Normandy -- setting the stage for the eventual liberation of Europe.

President Ronald Reagan, 1911-2004

We were greatly saddened to learn of the passing of President Reagan today. CNN runs this special report on his remarkable life.

In eight short years as President, Ronald Reagan changed the world. He personified the triumph of human liberty in our time, and because of his leadership great events were set into motion that liberated tens of millions from oppression. At home, President Reagan's historic tax relief transformed our economy and unleashed the greatest peacetime expansion in history. President Reagan's courage and boundless optimism made our nation more secure and more free. His legacy will be felt by Americans for generations to come.

It is worth remembering today the moving words he delivered twenty years ago tomorrow at a lonely, windswept point where freedom was saved:

These are the boys of Pointe du Hoc. These are the men who took the cliffs. These are the champions who helped free a continent. These are the heroes who helped end a war.

Gentlemen, I look at you and I think of the words of Stephen Spender's poem. You are men who in your 'lives fought for life...and left the vivid air signed with your honor'...

Forty summers have passed since the battle that you fought here. You were young the day you took these cliffs; some of you were hardly more than boys, with the deepest joys of life before you. Yet you risked everything here. Why? Why did you do it? What impelled you to put aside the instinct for self-preservation and risk your lives to take these cliffs? What inspired all the men of the armies that met here? We look at you, and somehow we know the answer. It was faith, and belief; it was loyalty and love.

The men of Normandy had faith that what they were doing was right, faith that they fought for all humanity, faith that a just God would grant them mercy on this beachhead or on the next. It was the deep knowledge -- and pray God we have not lost it -- that there is a profound moral difference between the use of force for liberation and the use of force for conquest. You were here to liberate, not to conquer, and so you and those others did not doubt your cause. And you were right not to doubt.

You all knew that some things are worth dying for. One's country is worth dying for, and democracy is worth dying for, because it's the most deeply honorable form of government ever devised by man. All of you loved liberty. All of you were willing to fight tyranny, and you knew the people of your countries were behind you.

We'll miss you, Mr. President.

President Outlines Steps to a Free Iraq

In his radio address to the nation this morning, President Bush hailed the emergence of a new Iraqi government, saying that we are moving closer toward helping Iraqis achieve full sovereignty on June 30th:

This interim government reflects new leadership drawn from a broad cross-section of Iraqis. The new government brings together men and women of varied backgrounds who represent Iraq's ethnic and religious diversity. Five were regional officials, six are women, and all are Iraqi patriots, dedicated to building a brighter future for their country.

Naming this new government advances our five-step plan to help Iraq achieve democracy and freedom as a united and federal nation. It brings us closer to realizing the hope of millions of Iraqis, a fully sovereign nation with a representative government to protect their rights and serve their interests. It brings us closer to seeing a Middle East that knows the blessings of liberty, and it brings us closer to defeating a ruthless enemy that has killed thousands of innocents and still threatens the peace of the world.

The President also spent some time discussing why completing our work in Iraq is necessary for the security of the American people:

The challenges of our time extend beyond Iraq. The war on terror is being fought on many fronts, and since September the 11th, we have seen terrorist violence from Morocco to Indonesia. Yet the center of this conflict remains the Middle East. If that region is abandoned to dictators and terrorists, it will be a constant source of violence and alarm, exporting killers of increasing sophistication and destructive power. If that region grows in democracy, prosperity and hope, the terrorist movement will lose its sponsors, lose its recruits, and lose the festering grievances that keep terrorists in business. It is our work to win this struggle.

Minnesota Veterans Hold Rally & Set the Record Straight on Kerry

Our friends in New Mexico weren't the only ones to show which candidate is the true friend of the veteran. Over 200 Bush supporters, including scores of veterans from World War II, Korea, and Vietnam attended the “Rally For Our Veterans, Our Troops, Our President” on the steps of Coffman Memorial Union at the University of Minnesota. Speaking were LTC Joe Repya (U.S. Air Force (Ret.), General Dennis Schulstad, U.S. Army (Ret.), and Former Naval Officer Kimani Jefferson, a 1998 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy). Schulstad and Repya are State Co-Chairs of BC'04 Minnesota Veterans Leadership Team, and Jefferson was recently elected as a delegate to the Republican National Convention. There were lots of cheers, chants and excitement as the speakers voiced their strong support of President Bush and his strong decisive leadership in the War on Terror. These veterans who know the importance of steady leadership in a time of war -- and they strongly support President Bush.

Following the speeches, Repya told the cheering crowd “Let’s go give John Kerry a real Minnesota welcome!” which led the crowd to march from Coffman Union to the Sports Pavilion where the Kerry campaign was hosting an event. Kerry supporters outside the Pavilion were totally dumbfounded by the cheers and chants of “Four More Years!”

"Blowout" Gains Throughout the Economy

This report has more on the impressive job numbers announced today, with "blowout" numbers in most sectors of the economy suggesting that the economic recovery is sustainable. In Rome today, President Bush reacted to the jobs report, saying, "Today's job report shows that the American economy is strong, and it's getting stronger - 248,000 jobs for last month is good for the American workers. It shows that our economy is vital and growing."

"What is really key is that every major sector had improvements," said John Silvia, chief economist for Wachovia Securities. "That suggests these gains are sustainable."

The struggling manufacturing sector also is reawakening, adding 32,000 new jobs last month. Based on revised figures, it was the fourth straight month of payroll increases after almost three years of continuous losses.

Friday's report was good news for President Bush, who has been counting on continued employment growth to boost his re-election prospects. His campaign rushed out a new television ad praising the new job-creation numbers.

Watch our new ad, "Pessimism," which contrasts President Bush's work for a stronger economy with John Kerry's pessimistic rhetoric that doesn't create a single job.

New Mexico Veterans Support President Bush

John Kerry’s attempt to demonstrate that veterans support him more than President Bush flopped today in New Mexico. At a Kerry campaign press conference and rally in Albuquerque, several dozen Bush/Cheney supporters dwarfed the 20 or so Kerry supporters that showed up at the event. Several Veterans for Bush, led by Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White, respectfully protested pessimistic and downright untrue rhetoric from the Kerry camp. After spending several minutes attacking President Bush, one Kerry organizer decreed from the microphone that they were shooting for 100 people to show up but they were only able to get to that number “with the help of their fellow American citizens,” motioning toward the Veterans for Bush/Cheney who encircled the event!

Sheriff White told the Bush supporters and the media the facts. President Bush has increased funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs, has increased funding for health care programs for veterans, and continues to be a steadfast supporter of all of America’s men and women who serve. Darren White explained to the press: “There’s a reason that Bush supporters double the number of Kerry supporters here, and it’s because President Bush has provided strong leadership on issues important to our veterans.”

New polling data out from CBS News today backs up what we saw in Albuquerque. According to the poll, President Bush leads John Kerry among veterans 54% to 40%, an overwhelming margin and proof that President Bush has the support of a majority of America’s veterans.

Our grassroots organization is strong in New Mexico; our Veterans for Bush/Cheney needed about three hours to organize twice as many supporters as John Kerry’s campaign was able to do in what was no doubt several days of planning.

A Soldier Shares the Real News from Iraq

An American soldier returns from Iraq and shares his experience in Missouri's Springfield News Leader:

I am so thankful to America and my commander in chief (President Bush) for having the courage to lead us to help these very needy people.

I love America and was so happy to get to come home (end of April), and I came home knowing that my mission, in all that we did, was not in vain.

Travis Tyler speaks proudly of the missions he accomplished during his year in Iraq:

We put their school back in existence and supplied school supplies for them. We gave power to areas that had to do without. Roads that were damaged were slowly rebuilt by other battalions. We showed hope and kindness to a country that knew none.

Morning Reads: Getting to Know John Kerry

Americans are finally getting to know John Kerry, and more often than not, they're coming away disappointed. This piece by Peter Wallsten in the Los Angeles Times suggests that Kerry is not all that some Democrats hoped, and confirms the essentially negative tone of Kerry's appeal:

"Sure, we'd rather Kerry be a greater progressive champion, we'd rather he have a stronger position on the war," said Robert Borosage, co-director of the conference and a former aide to the Rev. Jesse Jackson. "But the threat is posed by George Bush, not by John Kerry." ...

Melvin Goodman, a former CIA and State Department official who recently co-wrote a book titled "Bush League Diplomacy: How the Neoconservatives Are Putting the World at Risk," lamented during a panel discussion Thursday that Kerry had "abandoned" the dovish tendencies that led him to protest the Vietnam War soon after returning as a decorated veteran.

"Kerry's got to go back to his thoughts he had as a young man," Goodman said. "He's gotten far too conservative, far too conventional."

The Weekly Standard provides this amusing Kerry campaign slogan from the same liberal gathering:

"I don't care if John Kerry is a sack of cement; we're going to carry him to victory."

Writing in USA Today, BC'04 Chief Strategist Matthew Dowd provides context on our efforts to set the record straight on John Kerry and his consistent attempts to have it both ways on issue after issue after issue:

John Kerry has a long record of actions, votes and statements detailing his time as a U.S. senator. It documents the career of a politician who has voted for higher taxes, voted against weapons systems our troops are using today, voted against funding for troops in harm's way, repeatedly supported higher gas taxes, attacked the Patriot Act under political pressure and played politics with Iraq and the war on terror by shifting positions depending on political necessity.

Kerry has tried to detach himself from this 19-year record by reversing himself on a host of issues such as the No Child Left Behind Act, the liberation of Iraq and the Patriot Act. It's important for voters to understand that despite Kerry's support for the Patriot Act, he attacks it on the campaign trail. Our ads are an important part of our dialogue with the American people about the choice between President Bush's steady leadership and Kerry's political posturing.

And more often than not, when people see Kerry, all they hear is pessimism. The AP looks at the gloom and doom coming from John Kerry and the left:

The America that John Kerry sees is weighted by millions of job losses, millions of people without health insurance, a "wage recession" for those who do have work, schools begging for money, exploding gas prices and "poisoned" alliances worldwide.

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times in south Texas newspaper is calling on John Kerry to pull a recent TV ad over its unauthorized use of photos of Hispanic veterans.

President Bush met with Australian Prime Minister John Howard yesterday, who praised the President's steadfastness in this momentous time.
