With my son,
I went to the shops.
Stopped at the newsagent
To buy some stationery,
To send in a package overseas.
A present required.

Lining up to pay,
I see a lady holding The Bulletin magazine
With Annita Keating on the cover-
The wife of Australia's former Labor Prime Minister
(seven years out of power)
Now separated.
"It's the last one in
the shop,"
the woman says to the shopkeeper.
"Oh yeh- I read about that in the Herald,"
I say.
"Yeh- it's interesting.
Why'd she have to go and say it all in public? Spread it round
the world. The poor children."
"Well- didn't Keating
make out, at a conference, that it was her who'd ended it all-
but she hadn't?" I offer.
Her husband, a quieter character,
nodded behind her.
"He was a control freak,"
she says.
"He didn't let her go
to uni, did he?" a shop assistant adds.
"My wife is a control
freak, too- Keating's wife wasn't the only one under control!"
says the man working on the lotto tickets, too busy to say a
lot.
"Great sales," I
say. "The last copy- I'll have to read yours' if I'm gonna
read it."
"I'll chuck it out after
I read it," the buyer says.
"It's great Australia
is so interested in politics," I comment.
"It's this they're interested
in," she says, as she holds up the last copy of The Bulletin,
with Annita on the front, waving it in the air "Just like
Beckham- those 2 girls- why do they go on like that?"
"Money," I offer.
"Well, it's just not very
nice" she finishes.

I walk out, to the post office.
And get my gift a package, and go to get it weighed. They ask
for my driver's license and address, and ask me to fill out a
customs declaration. They type my details into a computer, and
they write the details on the customs sheet they keep half of.
They stick onto the package a large fluro orange sticker saying
"I.D. RECORDED".
They say it's a counter terrorism
measure. Yet they don't do it in Britain, I say- as I'd recently
received a package from there. He agrees.
"They seem to do a lot
of other things together," I say. "Iraq, for instance.
Increasing university fees. Remember that story about that young
woman in Britain, recently, who tried to sell her virginity online,
to pay her student fees?"
He gives me an odd look.
A shame Iraqis can't put in
counter colonial and counter occupation measures on human entries
to their own country.
What's left of it.

The next stop is the supermarket.
Buying a dinosaur is the first priority.
I walk around, and under my arm is my unaddressed package
(I'd forgotten the complete address).
Fully weighed and stamped,
with a large sticker in fluro orange and black type
"I.D. RECORDED".
