Stifled uses

Kortney Stirland:

Hi, I’m Kortney Stirland, the conductor of the Symphony of the Canyons, a not-for-profit, community orchestra that draws its members from Kanab, Utah and surrounding areas in Utah and Arizona. The ages of our members range from as young as 12 to as old as 70 years old. Members are paid for travel expenses, but otherwise receive no compensation. Copyright restoration has hurt my orchestra by removing works from the public domain. Symphony of the Canyons depends vitally on the availability of music in the public domain. Nearly 80 percent of the music we perform is music in the public domain that’s no longer copyrighted. As a community orchestra, we can’t afford to pay for renting the sheet music for many copyrighted works. I would love to have the chance to perform Khachaturian's Sabre Dance or Stravinsky’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, but the restored copyrights make the sheet music just too expensive.
