12:07am: Enough, Already

Don't feel much like blogging today.

Time for a break. See you all on Monday... maybe. Don't send me any emails either, 'cause I won't be checking mail until Monday.

And thanks for your unbelievable generosity towards the Walter-Adam Fund.

Here's the email I sent the guys:

Gentlemen,

As of 6:00pm (okay, 1800h) today, we've raised enough money for FOUR Night Force scopes (26 hours... damn). I know you wanted three, but I figure a little redundancy won't hurt. Incidentally, someone asked if your existing scope rings will cope with the increased diameter of the NF optic. Should I include NF rings with the order, or can your armorers handle it?

I'll be transferring the money into a checking account tomorrow (won't post today, unfortunately), which means that I'll be able to buy the scopes on about Wed next week. I'll have NF ship them directly to the base, c/o Walter. (Because the fund is called the "Walter-Adam Fund" on my website, I have to be able to prove that the fund-raising money went where I promised it would.)

Now: I'm getting inundated with emails from people who want to buy your T-shirts. What should I tell them?

Kim
P.S. When the scopes are mounted, DO NOT forget to take pics and send them to me. If Walter, Adam and Staff David can be holding the rifles with proud smiles, that would be terrific -- but if you'd rather stay anonymous, we understand completely, and pics of the rifles will more than suffice.
Think I'll watch President Reagan's funeral service, then head out to the range.

12:00am: Krag-Jorgensen Mod 92 (6.5x55mm)

Gratuitous Gun Pic

I've looked at the Krag-Jorgensen rifle before, and a whole bunch of people sent me mail talking about how much they loved their old Krags, and the excellence of the .30-40 cartridge as well.

As I said before, I'm impressed with the action of the Krag ("silk" describes it best), but if we're to accept the history of the time, the .30-40 cartridge was outclassed by the 7x57mm.

Had the U.S. military accepted the "wussy" 6.5x55mm Swedish cartridge instead of insisting on a .30-caliber round, maybe the course of history would have been changed.

The Norwegian Army did adopt the Krag in 6.5mm Swede, and an excellent-looking rifle it is, too:

It was also issued in carbine-length, and I like it very much:

But I just saw yet another type, and I had no idea of its existence: a full-stock carbine.

Arrr arrrr arrrrr... oh my, now that is a beauty. It's at Collectors, and will set you back just under a grand.

Just recently, Collectors has been getting in a whole bunch of interesting old rifles.

[start mantra] I must not go down to Houston... I must not go down to Houston... I must not go down to Houston...

06:35pm: Georgia On My Mind

I see that Ray Charles passed away today.

Aaaaargh.

We lost two good ones in a week.

R.I.P.

02:23pm: Walter-Adam Fund Update

As of this post, we have just over $2,900 sitting in the Walter-Adam fund, and it seems to have stalled there. At $1,250 per scope, that's 2.3 scopes, and we need 3.

Using all the discounts available to us, we can get three scopes for about $3,450. (Actually, I was hoping we could get four scopes, for redundancy, but that looks a little unlikely right now.)

I don't have to do the math for you: you're not Palm Beach county Democrats.

Dig deeper. Please.

Update: Good grief. As of 6:15pm CT, the kitty stands at $4,600. I think we'll be able to send them FOUR Night Force scopes.

You can stop contributing now -- save yer $$$ for when the boys get over to the Sandbox -- which, incidentally, I'm allowed to say will be early in the fall of this year.

09:55am: Illegitimae Multae Carborundum

Looks like the Bad Guys are getting whacked over in Afghanistan, too:

An Afghan commander said Wednesday that Afghan and U.S. forces killed more than 70 Taliban rebels in a seven-day operation in a mountainous southern district, including at least 20 militants who died in a single clash.

...

On Wednesday, military spokesman Lt. Col. Tucker Mansager told reporters in Kabul that 20 anti-coalition fighters were killed in what he described as "the latest of several aggressive engagements by the Marines."

He said that two Marines and two allied Afghans were wounded - although earlier a Marine spokesman had said five Marines were hurt. Neither official mentioned air strikes.

Some 2,000 Marines based in Uruzgan have clashed repeatedly with large bands of militants in the region.

Another Taliban commander was killed Tuesday near Musa Qala in Helmand province, some 280 miles southwest of Kabul, said Mohammed Wali, a provincial government spokesman.

The commander, Mullah Malik, and another man opened fire on troops who tried to stop their car. Both were killed when the soldiers returned fire, Wali said. Two soldiers were wounded.
One Islamist bastard at a time... or, as in this case, seventy at a time.

And we're not the only ones killing Al-Qa'eda shitbirds:
Pakistani forces clashed with heavily armed foreign militants Wednesday, killing more than 20 people, in a mountainous tribal region near the Afghan border where hundreds of al-Qaida fighters are believed to be hiding, officials and a tribal elder said.

The bloodshed follows weeks of failed efforts to get the militants in South Waziristan to surrender to authorities by peaceful means after an army counterterrorism offensive in March that left 120 people dead.
Nice to see Pakistan, a Muslim country, getting in on the act of killing Islamist terrorists.

If that doesn't make yer morning coffee taste good, nothing will.

12:07am: RCOB Moment, Again

Goddamn it. President Reagan's State funeral hadn't even finished, when those Lefty churls Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings were bitching and moaning about "too much Reagan".

Here's Rather:

"Even though everybody is respectful and wants to pay homage to the president, life does go on," Rather told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

"There is other news, like the reality of Iraq," said the CBS Evening News anchor. "It got very short shrift this weekend."

"Once the herd starts moving in one direction, it's very hard to turn it, even slightly," Rather said. "Nationally, the herd has grown tremendously."
Oh yeah -- sorry to distract you from your "quagmire" obsession, Danny boy. You bastard. Shut your fucking mouth.

Brokaw just showed he has the attention span of a 5-year-old:
"I think just about everything is over-covered these days," said Brokaw, who anchors the NBC Nightly News. "The spectrum is so crowded. With all the cable networks, it begins to have a 'video wall' feeling to it."
Prick. I'm glad the cable networks have drained your viewership like a flushed toilet, and none too soon, either.

But the award for Most Classless Asshole Of The Decade goes to Peter Fucking Jennings, who does not deserve to keep his U.S. citizenship after this little crack:
"I'm more inclined to spare coverage — come on [the air], do something meaningful, then get away," he said.

"The last time I had to do it was with O.J. Simpson [during the 1994 car chase], and I had nothing to say after a certain period of time."
Dead president, double murderer -- they're all just media events, aren't they? You slimy, amoral little fuck.

To these preening little narcissists, overcoming Communism and winning the Cold war is so, like, yesterday's news.

I wish Jennings was standing in front of me right now, the Socialist scumbag. I'd "do something meaningful" to him, something involving a tree, a rope and a nail-studded baseball bat.

Aaaaaaaargh. I haven't been this angry in years.
