| | hungry | ] | I spent the evening with Gray, which was nice because I haven't gone up there since before Thanksgiving, I think. I played with the 3.5 year old... tonight we pretended to have a slumber party. His playing is getting more creative, and it's neat to watch him develop over time. The 9 month old is a moose... he's going to be a linebacker or something, I swear!
We watched Twelve Monkeys, which I'd not seen before, and soaked in the hot tub. Enjoyed the movie a lot, and am not even depressed by it- even though it has one of my personal recurring nightmares in it (the human race being wiped out by disease or other catastrophe; I think I watched too much "Star Blazers" as a kid!)
Now I am home and hungry. Maybe I will make vegan rice pudding? |

Betty's Wok and Noodle Diner |
[Nov. 22nd, 2003|09:46 pm] |
I forgot to mention Betty's when I did my post not too long ago. Right by the Symphony T stop on the Green Line and Northeastern, this is one of those places that lets you customize your noodle or rice dish, and there are lots of vegetarian/vegan options available. I had the chow foon with "Asian pesto" and it was very nice. It's also easy to make at home- I found a similar pesto recipe in Didi Emmons' Vegetarian Planet and used it with rice stick noodles. Yummy and cheap!! |

| | contemplative | ] | The wind is blowing between 25-50 knots this evening. I love listening to wind, rain, or snow at night... it helps me fall asleep. Especially a gentle snow, which makes everything muffled, though I'm not sure that I'm quite ready for that yet. |

And now for a journal recommendation... |
[Nov. 10th, 2003|12:08 am] |
... I am consistently impressed by recycling; he's written some great stuff lately, and you should check him out if he isn't already on your friends list. Plus, he's a nice guy. What more could you ask for? :) |

I'm in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania for the weekend, visiting friends and drinking "Wake the Fuck Up" brand coffee. No kidding, that is the name of the coffee. It's very tasty. :)
Unfortunately, my friends have their computers configured so that I can't stay logged into LJ for more than one screen, so I can't read locked entries on my friends list. Bah!
Hope you are having fun weekends :) |

| | curious | ] | We happened upon a great Lebanese restaurant yesterday, quite by chance. It's in this smallish town near where I grew up- and I never expected that such a nice restaurant would appear there, never mind a good Middle Eastern one. I had a delicious vegetarian rice and lentil dish. I am going to have to go there again (they do take-out) if only to get the name of it, since I'd never heard of it before. It was topped with caramelized onions! Wonderful.
Have you discovered a new restaurant lately? |

I ran out of soymilk and I'm really sleepy. I'm kind of craving one of those caramel lattes from Dunkin' Donuts. urbanwheelbarro, it's all your fault! It's so much sugary caffeinated goodness. Besides, I'd have to drive 15 minutes to the nearest Starbucks. Whereas DD is on every corner. So... off I go... *yawn*
[Edit: I just put on my winter jacket and found $15 (yes!), a to-do list from April 5, and a box of matches from Kashmir on Newbury St.] |

If you don't really understand why I was so excited about the health food store yesterday... |
[Oct. 21st, 2003|10:31 am] |
The Today Show had a really good segment on celiac disease that's worth watching. It's about 9 minutes long.
The only major thing wrong with it is that it doesn't cover cross-contamination, which I think is a big deal. A product might not have gluten added to it, but it might be processed on machinery that has been contaminated by gluten, so it's verboten. Example: anything made by Brach's candies, since they dust their lines with wheat flour! |

2 food-related reasons to visit Quincy |

| | excited | ] | Good Health Natural Foods. A nutritionist told me about this place way-back-when I was first diagnosed, but I never got around to visiting (probably because I had a little problem finding it.) Tonight, on the way back from the temp agency, I found it- completely by accident. WOW, it's huge! Now I don't have to drive to Mansfield to get my doughnuts! They have tons of frozen stuff! Downside: this stuff is pricey. For $12, I got a bag of amaranth hot cereal, a bag of tasty brown rice pasta, and one pumpkin spice bread mix. :/ However, I read recently that the IRS lets you deduct the cost of food for your special diet if you have a doctor's note and if you spend more than $300/year. I'll start saving my receipts in 2004!
Kam Man Mall and Supermarket!! This is so frelling cool! dj_segfault- this is better than Super 88. It's a nice, big supermarket that's very logically organized (unlike bits of Super 88) and... there's a mall attached to it! I found this while getting lost on the way home from the natural foods store. ;) It just opened, so there's still some vacancies, but there's lots of kawaii stores and bubble tea cafes popping up, among other things. I had a blast, and I can't wait to go back in a month or so, when it's filled out some more. Um, and I'll have to figure out an efficient way to get there from here because I have no idea how to do that, now.
It's still not Uwajimaya (do check out the website so you can see the nice falling autumn leaves), but... it's pretty good nonetheless. |

| | amused | ] | Some people are getting their knickers in a twist over posts from cat journals in kittypix.
Yes, it's silly to have a journal for your cat, and to write as if you are the cat(s), but it's fun, dammit. Some of my favorite journals are pet journals, because you see the work that the writer is putting into characterizing his/her pet. ally_bug, a_and_a, mrblueberry and polycat are some favorites of mine. Oh, and let's not forget my own acdcboyz, though they don't seem to want to update that frequently. ;) |
