The Northern Ireland Assembly was established as part of the Belfast Agreement and meets in Parliament Buildings. The Assembly is the prime source of authority for all devolved responsibilities and has full legislative and executive authority.

The Assembly was suspended from midnight on 14 October 2002. Elections to the Northern Ireland Assembly were held on 26 November 2003. The Secretary of State has assumed responsibility for the direction of the Northern Ireland Departments.

Lord Alderdice retired as Speaker of the Assembly with effect from 29 February 2004.
