Traces of Fire

“Everything starts with a pub-tour.
Couple of drinks, couple of cigarettes, off to the next bar.
Couple of drinks, couple of cigarettes.

Then - moving on.

Next day, same thing.
Couple of drinks with a couple of cigarettes in a couple of pubs.

In each of the pubs we leave behind a nice little lighter.
Each of these lighters equipped with a nice little transmitter
and its own transmission id.

And above the roofs antennas rise.
The next week we spend roaming the urban habitat, tracking the
lighters, tracing the fire; logging its every move
.”

Start by taking a deep breath,
Move the rake with the mouse,
Click once to put rake down,
Click again to pick rake up,
Click outside the garden to smooth,

End with peace of mind...

A Most Elaborate Plot

The old expression “You couldn’t make it up” might almost have been written for this bizarre, but true, story:

‘A teenager created an “elaborate matrix of deceit” on the internet to persuade another boy he had fallen in love with to murder him, a court has heard. The 14-year-old boy, dubbed Boy B in court, created a series of fictional characters in chatrooms, one of which ordered Boy A to murder him. Boy A, a 15-year-old, stabbed Boy B twice, but he did not die. Boy A admitted attempted murder and Boy B has admitted incitement to murder.’

Yes, that’s right: Boy B was charged with incitement to murder himself. That’s very weird. Anyway, during sentencing today, the judge described the case as ‘extraordinary’ and then went on to say; “Skilled writers of fiction would struggle to conjure up a plot such as that which arises here.” I couldn’t agree more. Here is the full confused tale.

New Changes To MovableType License

Six Apart announce new changes to their license:

"With the release of Movable Type 3.0014d, users will pay as they blog on a per-word basis (billing will be handled through the increasingly versatile TypeKey service). As a result, the license no longer penalizes those users who choose to maintain multiple blogs or host blogs with multiple authors. Instead, all users pay equally based on how much they use Movable Type. Of course, we recognize that not all words are created equally. Therefore, the new pricing structure breaks down as follows..."

A far more sensible approach, indeed. Ahem.

In The Shadow Of A Gun

Another slice of reality. Some of the images are graphic, but then so is war.

Is My Blog Burning? 4th Edition

Usually I’d only post this over on the Giant Iron Wok, but it’s so interesting that it belongs over here too: The world in 50 bowls of rice. Wow, that’s some collection of rice dishes.

Tim over at A Gentleman’s Commonplace may be right—the BBC could already have the headline of the year: ‘Swedish Elk Steals Bicycle’.

12 Years Around The World

"I chased you for 12 years around the world, and I still can’t find you."

Frankly I’m not sure if I would hate her, love her, thank her, or what. But I do know one thing: in the same situation I would have followed her too.

How about you?

The Forest Family

camp in the woods

This a great stuff:

‘Rather than live on the streets and expose Ruth to alcohol and drugs, Frank said, they hiked deep into Forest Park and built a lean-to. The pair went into the city twice a week to stop by the bank, attend church, buy groceries and clothes from Goodwill. Frank, a devout Christian, said he taught his daughter using the old encyclopedias. They grew vegetables and used the nearby creek to keep clean. They stored perishable foods in a small pool of water at the creek’s edge. The father has done a wonderful job of educating the girl, said police. She reportedly performs at a 12th grade level. Police say the father was ecstatic when KATU offered to set up a college fund for his daughter. Make donations for the girl to ‘Ruthie’s College Fund’ at any Bank Of America Branch.’

That has to be worth donating a couple of dollars to, doesn’t it? Here’s the full ‘Forest Family’ story.
