Fak, LJ just ate my entry. Damn rich text format!

Since I discovered Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab I have ordered there three times now, along with two friends I converted. It is a wonderful eclectic company that sells beautiful, undiluted, high quality scents with a literary, gothic or historical twist. The best thing about them is that you can order sixpacks of 'Imp's Ears', little test tubes with the perfumes, so you can try them out first. The BPAL-staff also throws a lot of extra free imps in. I'll post some reviews I wrote of other scents soonish, but first I have to go SQUEE!! all over you, since I got my 20-10 order yesterday!

Hier is een proefrecensie van mij die ik voor de Elf heb geschreven. Hij is nooit gepubliceerd, dus ik kan ik hem hier wel gewoon laten zien.

Het genre urban fantasy concentreert zich op de moderne stad in plaats van de gebruikelijke landelijke middeleeuwse setting. Het heeft inmiddels een respectabele troepenmacht opgebouwd, met bekende namen als Neil Gaiman, Charles De Lint, Laurell K. Hamilton en China Miéville in de gelederen. War for the Oaks (1987) van Emma Bull is een ‘moderne klassieker’ in het genre, en er was mij beloofd dat ik er weg van zou zijn. Dat klopte, en hoe!
Op één dag raakt ploeterende rockzangeres Eddi McCandry haar vriend en haar band kwijt; vlucht vervolgens Minneapolis door voor een reusachtige zwarte hond - een vormveranderende phouka; raakt betrokken bij een burgeroorlog tussen twee strijdende partijen Faerie om de macht over de stad en krijgt een onweeruitstaanbare lijfwacht om haar dag en nacht te beschermen tegen het sinistere Unseelie Court. En dan moet hoofdstuk drie nog beginnen!
War for the Oaks heeft niet alleen een strak plot, humor en een fraaie stijl. De karakters; de dialogen; de romances; de magie: ze léven allemaal, en de muziek en Minneapolis zijn net zo betoverend als de Faerie. Emma Bull verweeft moeiteloos de schijnbare tegenstelling van de moderne stad en traditionele folklore, zonder in clichés te vervallen. Zo doet Eddi wat ieder zou doen wan-neer er iets bovennatuurlijks gebeurt: het onmiddellijk aan haar beste vriendin vertellen. De Faerie zijn grillig, mysterieus en onvoorspelbaar - zoals het hoort. Ik ken niet veel personages die zo origineel en geloofwaardig zijn als Willy Silver, Hairy Meg of the Queen of Air and Darkness. Bovendien zit in deze uitgave extra scènes uit een filmscript geschreven door Emma Bull zelf, net als bij een special edition dvd.
War for the Oaks is een knap geschreven, warm en sympathiek boek. Rest de vraag: wanneer wordt het in Nederland uitgegeven?

George W. sings Sunday Bloody Sunday

I suck at updating. I still have all those notes of Egypt lying around that I wanted to make a coherent travelogue out of, and my notes for reviewing the scents of Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab I ordered.

But that will have to wait, because erm, *fidgets with feet*, tomorrow I'm going on another trip! The combination of a tax return and a suddenly single friend prompted us to book the long talked of citytrip to Stockholm, Sweden, and since I will be in the (relative) vicinity I'm traveling to Finland by myself afterwards, to see two of my friends in Turku and Helsinki. I studied with them in Dublin in 2001, and I can't wait to see them again. I only got in touch with one of them very recently, because we'd both had moved and changed email adresses. It turns out she had a baby two months ago!

I'm very excited about seeing a bit of Scandinavia. So, er, see you all in 10 days!

There. I'm back. Egypt was very impressive, in more ways than one. I'm still working on a report (and pictures! lots of 'em!), but I have to sleep some more first! Getting up at 6 generally and a night flight back will wear you down something awful. Anyway, Hi! to you all. Did aything happen while I was away?
