THIS GUY??!! SERIOUSLY??!!Firstly, the media is making Vajpayee's vacation into a news story. Why do I care where this guy, who is neither the leader of opposition, nor the BJP president is vacationing? Then he goes and says that the Gujarat riots were a major reason for the electoral defeat. Then the BJP comes and says there is no intention of removing Modi. Then the VHP attacks Vajpayee's senility.

For once, I agree with the VHP. One of the biggest peeves I have had with my fellow-countrymen at large is the fact that Vajpayee is so widely respected by them. It is mind-boggling how the admiration for the guy cuts across all sections of the society. Is it so easy to fool us?

Reservations in Private Sector in Maharastra?I was watching TV last night, and was so surprised I almost dropped my drink (nibu pani and bourbon: the tragedy was narrowly averted). How would they implement this? How do you tell Tata or GE who to hire?

Plenty of stories just like this one give some details. Will this actually happen? Surprised no one has posted this yet: implications for Indian economy seem pretty dire (re: foreign investement) if this actually happens.

RetreatIn the wake of the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, the hawks seem to be enacting a retreat, if anything, to distance themselves from George W Bush. Especially after his speech on Monday, detailing his intentions in Iraq. But it's now just Abu Ghraib. Questions are now being raised re: the lack of a clear "exit strategy", faulty pre-war intelligience, and current on-ground strategy. The San Francisco Examiner even printed this front page story on Iraqi casualties.

Now that even the neocons are distancing themselves from GWB, what will happen now? Will the discussion be pushed even further toward the prowar camp? Some articles:

SEXUAL FREEDOM AT WHAT COSTDear Friends.

How would you benefit a society through a money which is culled out of exploitation of weaker sex i.e Woman and above all giving them an status of Sexual Politics. How would you ensure that Child Abuse does not take place. How would you ensure that Women wouldnt become a sexual object. Anyway the much desired "freedom" is given undercaptioned "flesh trading" and revenue generating through pimping. Why dont just hold an exhibition of Male {ranging between 18 to 30} to service Women {ranging between 40 to 60}, why it is always woman that is sacrificed at the altar of Sexual Freedom.

A lot Depends on the Personality - Can he meet the challenges? We never had it so good. A person who is absolutely non-controversial. At least I haven't heard a single voice of dissent in the choice of Dr. Manmohan Singh as India's PM. I have given below my experience of meeting him and my idea of placing this story here is to show you the kind of person inside the mantle of PM.

I was in Delhi at that time when I met him on two occasions in 1999, in the course of my work as a journalist. I was contributing to Tamil Weekly Kunkumam from Delhi.

Once I did an exclusive interview and another time I trailed his campaign in the 1999 General Elections. He lost that election; but his personality sparkled during those meetings, which seemed significant than the poll results – at least I felt so.

Shocking, yet unreportedI'm leaving for north-eastern India tour(Jimbo,I got all permits for nothin'.Helps,if you know a few people who can pull the strings),so won't be here for a week or so.I just felt compelled to share this horrendous news with you guys before leaving.Last monday, when the stock markets greeted Sonia with a 550 point crash,at the other end was a farmer who sold his son for 50 kg of rice.

In the interiors of Tripura's Dhalai district,Rupanjay Reang gave away his three year old son Tangsukha to childless couple(a Mr Bathrai Reang and his wife) so that his family could eat.The poor father lamented,"All members of my family can make do with one meal a day,but my little son cannot.I couldn't bear to see him cry for food".

EXPLOITATION OF HISTORY IN INDO-PAK.A good start in Pakistan, I hope scholars and humanist of both the country could do something constructive:

1- Pakistan:

Dr Siddiqui said the educational system promoted the unity of India because doing so was in the interest of the British. As influence of the British increased in the subcontinent, their colonial ideology took a concrete shape, said Dr Mubarak Ali in his paper. In the initial stages of their rule, the British started to collate information about their history, arts and crafts and customs. However, the information that was collected was used in a manner which benefited the British only. Similarly, a view was promoted under which even though the Indians belonged to the race of Aryans, to which the British also belonged, local influences had 'polluted' them.

Code Name Copper GreenThe abuse at Abu Ghraib prison were part of a top-secret Pentagon program, code-named "Copper Green", to set up a rapid-response force against suspected terrorists and intorrogate them without any legal contraints. Responsibility goes all the way up the chain of command to Donald Rumsfeld. Below are some excerpts from Seymore Hersh's explosive article in the New Yorker.

According to interviews with several past and present American intelligence officials, the Pentagon’s operation, known inside the intelligence community by several code words, including Copper Green, encouraged physical coercion and sexual humiliation of Iraqi prisoners in an effort to generate more intelligence about the growing insurgency in Iraq. A senior C.I.A. official, in confirming the details of this account last week, said that the operation stemmed from Rumsfeld’s long-standing desire to wrest control of America’s clandestine and paramilitary operations from the C.I.A.

TORTURETorture has been common in Washington's interaction with many countries, more recently in Iran in the 1950s, through Latin America, and America's best documented direct participation in mass torture during the Vietnam War, writes Jack A Smith. This "culture" of official misconduct, says Ritt Goldstein, has its roots in the US's abuse of its own citizens by law enforcement agents.

Italian born Prime MinisterIt inevitable.Sonia Gandhi will become India's next prime minister.I'm pretty happy to see the Indian masses weren't least bothered by the fact that Sonia was born in Italy or that she and her children are practicing Roman Catholics, although she has been prevaricate on the matter. So what conclusions can be inferred from this surprising poll result? That the masses are maturing and are indifferent to frivolous issues or that they are still caught in a time warp and vote blindly for the Dynasty?Or is the Indian fascination for the fair skin to become legend now?

Passion of christ or passion for violenceHere is a link to an article on the movie passion ..!
I saw the move yesterday, but at the end of it all could not understand what was the purpose.
It was a fine example of one man milking others' faith for his indulgence and profit. Gibson has milked the christians for his benefit. All thru the move a young tamil christian girls behind me kept on chanting 'Ayyo Yessappa' and such other comments. The scene's of torture, beating and flaggelations went overboard so much that it became boring and revolting. Half the movie was devoted to this gorish display of blood and mahyem

Cliffhanger PollsI doubt if we will see any comments on this story, considering how much we are all caught up in Israel and Iraq, but am posting it nevertheless. In 2 days, the Lok sabha results will be out. And a precriously hung parliament throws up several possibilities.

The exit polls are throwing up prospects of a nail-biting finish in the Lok Sabha elections. Taking into account various exit polls, the NDA will get anywhere between 230-270 seats. The Congress -Left combine looks like it will get between 220-260 seats.

In such a close race, the winner is often decided by the exact numbers. However this time, even more than ever, it looks as if the Prime Ministership will be decided in Lucknow. No, I am not talking about the candidature of Vajpayee. I am talking about the envious position the SP and BSP are in. Now whichever exit poll you take, the NDA looks like it will get at least 10-15 seats more than the Congress-Left combine. The SP looks like it will get about 10-15 seats more than the BSP.

Rumsfeld and Saddam {a friend in is a friend indeed}A Saddam Chronology

by Stephen R. Shalom
December 15, 2003

From Iraq's first use of chemical weapons in 1983, the U.S. took a very restrained view. When the evidence of Iraqi use of these weapons could no longer be denied, the U.S. issued a mild condemnation, but made clear that this would have no effect on commercial or diplomatic relations between the United States and Iraq. Iran asked the Security Council to condemn Iraq's chemical weapons use, but the U.S. delegate to the U.N. was instructed to try to prevent a resolution from coming to a vote, or else to abstain. An Iraqi official told the U.S. that Iraq strongly preferred a Security Council presidential statement to a resolution and did not want any specific country identified as responsible for chemical weapons use. On March 30, 1984, the Security Council issued a presidential statement condemning the use of chemical weapons, without naming Iraq as the offending party. Biased Media and Sambhaji Brigade.Engish media's coverage on Sambhaji Brigade's attack (It's attack on Lane's Book, BORI and destruction of Sanskrit Manuscript) was dubbed as hindutva attack on BORI but nothing can be further from truth.

On the contrary, Sambhaji Brigade is an anti-brahmin group. It's parent MSS(Maratha Seva Sangh) has converted thousands of hindus. It destroyed sanskrit manuscript because it is against sanskrit language.

Search google for 'laine hindutva' and you will find many articles blaming hindutva for attack eg. Washington Post, Stopfundinghate.com etc.

Homosexuality a crime in India?!!!!I am appaled to know that homosexuality(including bisexuality and transsexuality) is a criminal offence in India. The major provisions of criminalisation of same-sex acts is found in the Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) of 1860.The nucleus of the Indian penal code was originally drafted by Lord Macaulay.

Section 377 of IPC reads, "of unnatural offences: Who ever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal shall be punished with imprisonment for life or imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to 10 years and shall also be liable to fine."
