An Interaction That a Librarian Might Have Had

Teacher to Student:

You have to choose a topic that interests you.

Student to Librarian:
Question #1

Do you have information about tattoos?

Question #2

Do you have information about low-riders?

Question #3

Do you have information about gangs?

Teacher to Student:
I don't think any of those are good topics for your paper.

Student to Teacher:
Then I can't do it.

Fahrenheit 2100

Yesterday we poured our first bronze pieces. I spent about seven hours packing the mold I made of clay in sand, and when I removed the clay, sand stuck to it. So rather than just pour bronze into a shapeless lump, one of my classmates suggested that we repack it, with ten minutes before the pour. Amazingly, it came out better than after seven hours of the same. The bad thing is, in our rush, we packed it upside down, so the flask (a wooden box) was not tight. See the power of hot metal as it escapes from my flask.

The setup includes 2 propane tanks and a vacuum cleaner from the fifties.

That's me on the right -- designated pourmaster.
Holding the crucible with me is some woman whose name I don't know.
My instructor, Michael Creger, is in the middle.

Now we're pouring into the first flask.
Debbie uses the rod to put out fires that spring up.
Ben is the skimmer, who collects junk from the top of the molten bronze.

Malina checks out the first batch.

Ben removes his piece from the flask and douses it with water.

When it comes time to pour mine, there are problems. Notice the words "top" on my flask? Maybe that's the problem . . .

Michael yells, "Keep pouring!" Suzanne steps in to try to stop the burning.

No one is that worried.

Molten bronze keeps rushing through the cracks and sand is thrown to put out the fire.

You'll have to stay tuned to this blog to see what happens next.

Busy Tuesday

We have our heroes. One of mine as a teen was Johnny Clegg, who was my introduction to so-called world music. One of K's was Larry Watson, her first creative writing teacher, the person who steered her into becoming a writer rather than a French teacher.

I had never seen Johnny Clegg in concert, so when I found out he was coming to Portland, I bought tickets for us immediately. And then Sunday, K found out Larry Watson would be reading the same night; she has not seen him in 20 years. As good couples often do, we negotiated and made it to both events.

I got to meet Larry and his sweet wife, Susan, and learned that one of their kids is a year older than I. Wow. Then we made a mad dash to the show and missed only one song. Clegg is a master showman and has a fine new band. I want to learn to Zulu dance! Here they are with Nelson Mandela dancing on stage.

Countdown to Retirement -- count the cost

She arrived at work today without a hello. She was holding a calculator and insisted that I perform the following calculation: 6 2/3% of $1426. I could see where this was going.

I got the total and read it aloud: $95.07.

"That's what I got too," she exclaimed, almost surprised. "That is the amount I will give up per month if I retire early. That amount can feed a family of four back home."

Despite my keeping this blog, I assured her that I wanted her to retire when she's ready.

She said that L. (our boss) wants her to retire early.

I innocently asked, "At the end of the school year?" (mid-June)

She said, "No. The end of May. I will not go out before my time."

OK. OK. We get it!

I went upstairs and asked F. if she'd already been subjected to calculations.

I didn't even need to ask.

F. said she's certain the figures are incorrect. But we both know that there's no changing S.'s mind -- what's left of it.

Canadian Wildlife

After a glorious week on Vancouver Island in British Columbia I feel compelled to warn you of the dangers that await you there.

1. There's a reason they called her Cougar Annie.

2. Two of the three trails we tried to hike were closed due to above normal bear activity.

3. I was bit on the finger while feeding a rabbit on the campus of University of Victoria.

4. A crow attacked my head from behind, sinking beak and talons into my thinning hair. No fair.

5. Plants eat insects.

6. People come back as killer whales.

7. This animal can be found in many countries, but I've never known it needed milking.

Fathers' Day

As I get older, I'm more and more grateful I've chosen not to become a father. It all seems so exhausting. I know two stay-at-home dads, and many of the rest expect their wives/partners to do everything. That's in the situations where the dads stuck around.

For each birthday, I'm happy that I have all kinds of freedoms: travel, concerts, movies, dining out. From what I can tell, my daddy friends can't do those things, and if they can, it ain't easy.

But I am glad for my friends who do have kids. I get to see them, enjoy them, but also be reminded of how hard it must be. I get to see them go home.

So on this Fathers' Day, I salute a few of my Daddy Friends: Jay, Dave, John, another John, Will, Porter, who have I forgotten?

And to my own Father, who would have loved the web, I blog for you too. I'm old enough now to miss you.

New and Old Friends

Sarah from Cafe Mama tells this great story of how gmail has connected her to others. My wife still says Sarah's torte is "the best thing to come out of the Internet."

And last night was the last day of the academic year, so friends/coworkers gathered at Pied Cow to drink a little and smoke the sheesha. Now that was fun.

Happy Summer everyone!
