what more could women want? freedom, that's what. freedom from being the thing looked at rather than the person looking back. freedom from self conciousness. freedom from the duty of sexual stimulation of jaded male appetite, for which no breast ever bulges hard enough and no leg is ever long enough. freedom from the uncomfortable clothes that must be worn to titillate. freedom from shoes that make us shorten our steps and push our buttocks out. freedom from the ever present juvenile pulchritude on page 3. freedom from the humiliating insults heaped on us by the top shelf of the newsagents; freedom from rape, whether it is being undressed verbally by the men on the building site, spied on as we go about our daily business, stopped, propositioned or followed on the street, greasily teased by our workmates, pawed by the boss, used sadistically or against our will by the men we love, or violently terrorized and beaten by a stranger, or a gang of strangers. some germaine greer for you. shes alright afterall. |

"I have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is; I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat." - Rebecca West, 1913 i called in sick to work today half asleep at 9.35 this morning. went back to sleep straight after, god knows what i said. i also think i agreed to do some work at some point, next weekend i think. they TRICKED a sick girl, TRICKED. ok, so perhaps not a full and frank account of the weekend, but yes! accompanied on friday to felt with some favourite pals, which was amazingly lovely. felt was a bit weird wannit! it could really work if it was just north of the river you know, i just dont think people are willing to go south for a new club. even people who live down the road in new cross are apprehensive about going somewhere with no tube n that. but! that said i had a pretty lovely time thanks to the sweetest people in the world and a kind atmosphere. it is a shame that ms x is a bit insane sometimes. that really shocked me. i was less upset...more just shocked. weird. like i said to hannie, i wouldnt say that to a stranger, nevermind someone we care about. really fucking twattish thing to say. we forgive that girl a lot but that was over the frigging top. im not entirely sure what else shes been up to but its all WRONG. yes! wandered about town on saturday and went to franks one of my favourite caf's in the world, because its pie is one of the finest pies i have ever eaten. pie with a mug of hot tea in the middle of covent garden is KING. more tea on the south bank in the cold and AMUSEMENTS in the AMUSEMENT arcade. WOB it was a last minute decision thing or we would have called you south. i had a bit of a star wars race and a quick gamble on some horses. then played on a wrong "jam with your favourite bands thing" where you pay a pound to hit synth drums along to some song. i am a twat and chose easyworld "you and me" for comedy value and was amused for about ten seconds. bit surreal nonetheless. oh christ, its three and i havent revised yet. ah well. gordons wine bar was as amazing and sneaky as always, one day i will plot something cunning and devious in there with immaculate victorian precision. also ate some pricey yet tasty cheese- i would recommend the double gloucester. the leicester was all dry and not too pleasing at all really and only served as a contrast to the very herby gloucester. on route to town saw a man jumping up and down on some flat ex-cardboard boxes and this made us laugh. bricklane on sunday, accidentally encroached upon a large festival of some sort, something to do with giving away free curry and balloons of horses. swerved too fast through the crowd and ate some very tasty cake. overall the finest of weekends, *sigh* ok, i have copied this from dgkatie06 in the Feminist community and i liked it and think its worth reading. Winston Churchill, possibly the greatest rhetorician of the Modern Era, said in 1941 “United we stand. Divided we fall. Divided, the dark age returns. United, we can save and guide the world.” Although his words were meant specifically to inspire unification of the English speaking countries to combat the menace of Nazi Germany, they are applicable today as we strive to unite in stopping the war on women. Unlike the forces in World War II where the enemy was clear and visible to the world, our war is fought in secret battles inside the home, in the workplace and in ourselves. Every six minutes a woman is sexually abused or raped. Every 15 seconds a woman is battered by an abusive partner or her husband. Despite legislation to prevent discrimination in the workplace, women continue to earn only 73 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts. Finally, many women attack those people who have been victimized by sexual assault, domestic violence or rape. This form of victim blaming destroys what remains of the survivor’s strength, cutting her down when she needs her friends, her family, her peers the most. Divided we fall. Feminists across the country unite during events such as Take Back the Night in October, the V-Day campaigns in February and Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April. My vision is for a country that supports women and men uniting together during every month and as part of each day to stop this war on women. We live in a culture that promotes violence to keep women subordinate and inferior, we live in a rape culture. Women and children are mutilated in countries such as Afghanistan through acid attacks, or in countries such as Nigeria where female circumcision remains a common rite of passage. Although these crimes against humanity are atrocious, we must not turn a blind eye to the magnitude of crimes that are being committed every day, every hour, every minute within our own country. We must not ignore the silent cries of the abused and battered women that are too terrified to leave their homes, who have no place to go, whose children depend on her living in pure, unrivaled evil. We must not silence the feeble voices that rise from sexual assault and rape survivors as they dare to tell their stories in a hostile world. We must not squash the resilient few who fight back against their attackers. We must unite behind the common goal to stop ignoring this problem for pretending it does not exist is giving this rape culture a mandate to flourish. United, we can save and guide the world. the statistics are reputable if you were wondering. i am not feminist because i dont think that equal rights for men are unimportant, i am a feminist because i think that equal rights for all are important and while women remain lower class citizens i am bloody going to do all i can to change it. war metaphors are pretty much impossible to use without seeming a little silly, but just think, think 50 frigging % of the world (approx, innit...) are women, this affects billions of people! "Because woman’s work is never done and is underpaid or unpaid or boring or repetitious and we’re the first to get fired and what we look like is more important than what we do and if we get raped it's our fault and if we get beaten we must have provoked it and for lots and lots of other reasons we are part of the women's movement." and yes. it is as bad as all that. hmm.x |

On 23rd Jul 1984 ... The Number 1 single was: Frankie Goes To Hollywood - "Two Tribes" The Number 1 album was: Bob Marley & The Wailers - "Legend - The Best Of Bob Marley & The Wailers" Born on 23rd Jul: 1942 - Madeline Bell ( vocalist, Blue Mink ) 1946 - Andy Mackay ( saxophone, woodwind, Roxy Music ) 1947 - David Essex 1964 - Nick Menza ( drummer, Megadeth ) 1965 - Slash ( guitarist, Guns N' Roses ) 1971 - Dalvin DeGrate ( aka Mr Dalvin, vocalist, Jodeci ) 1973 - Fran(cis Healy) ( Lead vocalist, Travis ) thats so cool! not only do Slash and i come from the VERY SAME TOWN but we were born on the VERY SAME DAY today is my lazy day. im allowed to be amused by unamusing things. my first proper lie in for an age today (y), and rather marvellous it was too. i got 12 hours, yet awoke feeling refreshed. i put this down to my following of "the guardians'" guide to a good nights sleep. one must begin sleep in the correct manner, which is by aligning the spine correctly. if you sleep on your back (y) then put a pillow under your knees. (y) plus the fact that i was bloody knackered, and now i am less so. i am listening to sonic yoot. man, i was glowing yesterday. i put some lightning bolt on at work and was wandering about browsing the rec'ds and the world felt so good. atp has such an amazing way of making me feel so turned on to music, i feel inspired and happy and like i like the best music in the world, which of course i do (y). met the ginger slightly indie neighbour man from "shameless" yesterday. he said, "starsailor will be upset to see their album for £1.99" (looks at feet shyly) i said, "shouldve made a better album then" (shoves handful of grapes into mouth) (silence) i said, "i cant stop eating these grapes" |
