This is an old article, but given my present assignment at work (documenting and flowcharting credit, debit, ACH, and EFT transactions), it raises quite a few valid concerns, especially for this company. The company I work for runs an automated payment service for a number of large utility companies. Recently, we began receiving a scattering of calls from end users complaining about extra fees being charged to their ATM cards, on top of the standard transaction fee that we charge anyway. The further implications of this are obvious. Just thought it was worth mentioning. BTW - Citibank, Bank of America, Chase, and Washington Mutual are some of the banks that currently do NOT charge fees for debit transactions. As far as major banks go, if you have an account at US Bank, they're probably charging you up to a quarter for every debit card transaction. I can't get any information on the topic out of Wells Fargo. I have found a list of banks in the Tri-State area, and the NYC area, that charge fees for debits, as well as the amounts. I'm having trouble digging up a national list of major banks that charge these fees, but if you want the list I have, let me know.
