I
got another tattoo

what I'm looking for, but thanks for the idea. And you can always
email me more... |

I
got my first tattoo
suggestion. It was really more a suggestion of location than a
specific design. Unfortunately, I've already decided it's going on
my left ankle. Thanks for the idea though...
Dr. Science also provided me a
link to a page about that equation... Also, you can check out
other insane
math... Check them out if you're bored...
And Happy Halloween.
I got a rock. |

Dammit,
why can't I ever go to bed when I say I'm going to? Just got off the
scale... New low today, and I'm only 10 pounds from getting my tattoo.
That's when I said I'd start working on the design... I'd appreciate
any suggestions, but I'll probably go with something I do in photoshop.
But if anyone wants to submit anything, email
it to me. It just has to be the equation:
I'll work up something better later, but I'm going to need to rest
up if I'm going to write that novel... Bedtime, really now... |

Quick
updates... I'm tired from racquetball...
First off, the robots are being trained
to kill without human intervention. That's nice.
Slashdot is
running an
interview with Wil Wheaton. You know, he runs his own weblog at
WilWheaton.net.
He actually seems like an all-right guy...
More speculation, but apparently there's
movement on an Aliens
vs. Predator movie. I was terribly upset with Alien: Resurrection.
I was certain that it was going to kill that series... This has potential,
and if they do it, I hope they do it right...
Here
is an interesting story about a pitch Stanley Kubrick made a while
ago that was turned down... I really need to watch Dr. Strangelove
again... It's been too long...
Although it's getting enough traffic to choke it right now, the Wayback
Machine will let you look up web pages as they were back in the
day... For example, check out the old University
of Houston Student Video Network page...
I guess that's about it. I got a call from the girl I had been seeing
today. We had kind of broken it off when I talked with her last Wednesday.
Well, we talked a bit more today, and it is definitely broken off
now.
Back in the day, Heather Havrilesky wrote a filler about Mr.
Flinchy, the non-committal male. I guess that's me. I'm not quite
the player she makes her Mr. Flinchys out to be, so I guess that doesn't
quite fit. I just have a tendency to bail if I see anything, no matter
how small, in someone I'm with that I don't like. And the ones I do
like bail on me... Whatever, though... I've gotten used to being single,
and it gives me a lot more time to do stuff like update this web page
and write my novel. I guess I only have two more days to come up with
a rough outline... I have to start writing on Thursday.
But as I said before, it's bedtime now. Sleep is good. |

(Night)
|
Well,
in Heather Havrilesky's Rabbit
Blog, she mentions that November is National Novel Writing Month.
I think that sounds like a good idea. It's been a while since I've
had anything I can be really pretentious about. I think I need something
like that. Time to write a great novel... I guess I start that on
Thursday.
Boy howdy... talk about a
plateau... Racquetball had better kick my ass tomorrow. That chili
is still sitting in my gut like a chunk of lead. Time to get to sleep
now... A restless, tortured sleep... For who can truly sleep in times
such as these...
Can I have Dr. Science
be a character in my novel? |

Well,
I just un-retired the rest of my pants. If I lose any more weight,
I'll have to start buying clothes in sized I haven't been able to
buy in over six years. That is incredible.
But I made my first pot of chili this afternoon. It came out all right,
but I definitely know what I want to try with it next time. More fresh
ingredients... Onions, garlic, green peppers... And I definitely need
to use Habanero peppers instead of Serrano peppers. It definitely
didn't have the kick I was expecting out of it. But Chili, Ribs and
Brisket are the three things I've always wanted to know how to cook
properly. I'll be buying a smoker sometime in the next couple weeks
to try my first brisket and ribs. |

I
spent Friday evening drinking beer and watching news and movies. I
started an update, but never posted it... My roommate added some comments
which appear in italics. I present it unedited in the interest of
fairness... |

I
worry sometimes that this is the beginning of another world war. I
often bitch about christians, and shudder to think what it would be
like to live in a world run by the hard-line fundamentalist christian
types. Here in the US, this is a somewhat abstract thought. We have
enough sensible people around that the hard liners are never going
to take over.
But elsewhere, there are governments that are actually on the verge
of collapsing to fundamentalist religious fanatics. And the rage of
these fundamentalist fanatics is focused on us. -Goddamn Puritans!
We say that we are not at war with Islam. And none of us sensible
folks want to believe that we are at war with Islam, but sometimes
I wonder... Any ideology that allows you to believe that killing people
will win you rewards in the afterlife is problematic. Don't forget
to bring a harem with you....
Mind you, I'm drunk... But that's nothing new... Back when I was going
through my little Ayn
Rand phase, I had actually convinced myself that philosophy was
important. Recently, I'd been trying to convince myself that it isn't.
But now I'm starting to become convinced that if we can't some up
with a philosophy that works, the ones that don't work are going to
destroy us.
I Whole-Heartedly agree, my inebriated friend! Miscellaneous comments

Well, I guess that's about all there is to that. Dancer In The
Dark is not a good watching a movie with the girl movie. Extremely
depressing. I don't think I'd quite put it in the category of Leaving
Las Vegas, but it approaches that one. And I think it's killed my
current romantic relationship.
I think that's probably about all there is for this one... I'm really
quite a bastard. I can't deal with other people's problems. And
as nice as she is, my girl has some. A gentleman doesn't brag about
his exploits, and neither should I be airing other people's dirty
laundry, so I'll stick with my side of this... I'm not a very emotional
person. I kind of have a problem with people who are. She is. I
saw this coming last week, but a night out last night went well,
so I thought things were going better. But tonight went poorly,
and I think I'll have to be making an uncomfortable call tomorrow.
I haven't had to break up with anybody for almost three years now.
In that time, I've been dumped once, and I did not take it well.
I had dates with two people that went nowhere, but never really
developed into relationships that were worthy of a breakup. I had
one relationship that would have needed a break up if it hadn't
been entirely mutual. That one went well. We didn't call each other
for about two weeks, then we had a friendly exchange of posessions
left at our respective places of residence. But I think I'm going
to actually have to break up with someone here, and I'm not looking
forward to it. I hate confrontation, and she really is a sweet person.
She's just not right for me.
But it's late now. Reminder: Don't watch Dancer In The Dark with
your girlfriend. Far too depressing.

My fish died today. It's sad.
But my relationship is actually going somewhat well... We saw Serendipity
with John
Cusack tonight, and I'm having her over to watch Bjork
in Dancer
In The Dark tomorrow or Tuesday.
You can pre-order the first season of Twin
Peaks on DVD now... I'm going to need to get that... My video
tapes are getting worn out, and my VCR is now eating tapes.
For a long time, my favorite web site has been Leisuretown.
(Probably not safe for work...) He is now soliciting
donations, and I think I'm going to make one, at least to cover
the bandwidth I've sucked up over the course of a year and a half
of checking the site weekly to see if he's doing anything new. But
on his library
page, he promises something new called the Leisure Town Activity
Book. He said probably today, but it's not there just yet. I can't
wait... If you have time to kill, I'd definitely suggest reading
his old stuff. Some of my favorites are Yay
For Me, Around
And Around, Madame
Chairwoman, and Job
Interview. Tristan
A. Farnon has a delightfully negative outlook on life... I'd
try to describe the site further, but if I could write reviews I
probably would have started by now. Go
there. Read them all. It rocks.
I finished reading Dune: House Atriedes. I'm now reading More
Than A Carpenter, an evangelical book I found in the hallway
outside my apartment, and Fear
and Loathing in America, the second volume of letters my Hunter
S. Thompson. I really don't know why I have such and unhealthy relationship
with the Christian faith. I know it's not for me, but for some reason
I actually chat with Jehovah's Witnesses, and I'll actually read
any tract I come across. I should just move along with my life and
drop this stupid religious/philosophic search that's been consuming
my life for the last six or seven years.
I liked this Camus
quote I came across today:
You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness
consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning
of life.
OK... Well I'm going to finish up More Than A Carpenter and
get to sleep...

"There's a little white chicken smashed to hell on this road
to Missouri..."
Good Lord I don't update enough... I spent last weekend in Big
Smith's home town of Springfield, MO. They played Thursday,
Friday and Saturday night recording all three shows for an upcoming
live album. I can't wait... The setlists for the three nights were
quite similar, so I have a pretty good idea of what's going to be
on the album, and it sounds like they're going to include several
songs that they play live a lot, but that there aren't recordings
floating around for.
One of the songs they played has been stuck in my head since the
last show... I'm not sure what it's called, but the chorus goes
"I'd drive every weekend to see you in Springfield Missouri..."
And I don't know all the words, and I don't have a recording of
it anywhere... I guess I'm damned until they get their new album
out.
Like I said, the shows were great. However, I don't think I can
say the same about the people of Springfield. All the women I met
were bitches, and all the guys were in a fighting mood. One of the
fellas I was with had several people try to start fights with him
over dance floor space. (Mind you this is an absolutely packed house,
literally shoulder to shoulder people...) On the last night of the
show, I was leaving with a bumper sticker, and had someone drive
by in a car and yell "Big Smith Sucks..." Although he
made a convincing argument, I was not swayed.
But probably the weirdest thing that happened last weekend was someone
spraying pepper spray on the dance floor on Thursday night. They
had to clear the place out for about 15-20 minutes to let the place
air out. It kind of put a damper on the night...
Anyway, I'm not sure I'll be heading back to Springfield. The crowds
in Fayetteville are a lot more friendly, and the shows are just
more fun. Looks like I may be heading down there for a couple of
shows in November, but we'll see what the money situation is like.
But other than problems with some folks, it was a fun weekend. I
can't wait for the album, and am looking forward to seeing the guys
again.

I
almost forgot... My RCA DVD player stopped working yesterday. I've
only owned it for 10 months. And they want $89 to replace it... Fuck

Well
God-Damn... Tonight was racquetball night, and we played for 1.75
hours. I actually managed to win my first match against the guy I
play with. Another nice result of the play was another new
low... I just got off the phone with the girl met, and I have
a date for tomorrow night. I'm actually going to have money for the
Big Smith
shows next weekend...
I guess here is where I should make some joke about how I guess I'm
going to go in to work tomorrow and find out I'm laid off, but fuck
it. I'm just in a damn good mood. Have a great weekend everybody...

Yum.
I just got hungry, so I thawed some chicken, and marinated it in some
white whine, honey, wasabi powder, then applied black pepper liberally
while grilling it. That was so damn good.
There's some decent TV on tonight. I just watched That 70s Show. I've
always liked it, and now Kevin McDonald from Kids in the Hall is a
cast member. Rock. I'm watching What About Joan now, because Joan
Cusack is just cool. And coming up next is Frasier, and Sherilyn
Fenn is guest starring... I need to watch Twin Peaks again... |
