Poetry in the News

22 July: The shortlist for the 2004 Forward Poetry Prize for Best Collection, worth £10,000, consists of: Newborn by Kate Clanchy, The Tree House by Kathleen Jamie, The Strange Hours Travellers Keep by August Kleinzahler, Snow Water by Michael Longley and Corpus by Michael Symmons Roberts. Winners will be announced on the 6th October 2004.

2 July: Gael Turnbull has died at the age of 76. Born in Scotland, he travelled widely and collaborated with poets in Canada and America as well as Scotland and England. He founded the Migrant Press in 1958. Anvil published a retrospective of his work, A Gathering of Poems, 1950-1980 in 1983. A selected, Time is a Fisherman, is due from Etruscan Books next year.

25 June: Carl Rakosi, the American Objectivist poet, died age 100 in San Francisco.

12 June: Roger McGough received a CBE, and Pam Ayres, an MBE in the Queen's birthday honours.

9 June:This year's Eric Gregory Award winners are Abi Curtis, Nick Laird, Sophie Levy, Elizabeth Manuel and Saradha Soobraven. The awards, managed by the Society of Authors, are given each year to promising poets under the age of 30. 

This year's Cholmondeley Awards go to John Agard, Ruth Padel, Lawrence Sail and Eva Salzman.These awards recognise the achievement of individual poets and their contribution to poetry. More information from the Society of Authors.
