Previous research has investigated the many linkages between telecommunications and demand for travel in urban and metropolitan areas. However, despite the rapid and widespread diffusion of mobile communications technologies, almost no research has looked at the role these new systems are playing in organizing transportation and distribution systems in Europe and North America. The convergence of mobile communications with geographic information systems and automated positioning technology further suggests the importance of these technologies in understanding the changing nature of urban transportation.
This presentation will propose a framework for a multi-year trans-Atlantic research agenda to investigate the links between mobile communications, sustainable transportation, land use, energy use, and the environment.
Key questions to be addressed include:
• What theories and concepts are available to help frame research on the changes in travel and land use being facilitated by mobile communications?
• What are the relevant spatial and organizational scales at which to focus research? (Individual, group/firm, city & region?)
• What are the implications for ITS research as consumers and organizations deploy “ad hoc” ITS systems on a widespread basis?
• What are the opportunities for trans-Atlantic collaboration and cooperation in this research?
This presentation will focus on generating a debate about the importance of mobile communications to the sustainable transportation research community, and methods for crafting and linking this research agenda to current and past efforts.

Wireless Public Space Class at NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program
I'll be teaching my class on Wireless Public Space again this fall at ITP.
H79.2452 Wireless Public Space
This class is an intensive design workshop focusing on the challenges of deploying interactive digital media installations in public spaces in New York City. In this workshop, students apply traditional theory and practice of good urban design to design, evaluate and re-conceptualize interactive public installations. Student-designed installations are encouraged to draw upon one or more of three technology areas that offer new opportunities for enhancing urban public space: digital displays, wireless local area networks, and geographic information & positioning systems.
