Accordion. The very word strikes nausea and loathing in the hearts of Americans. Yet this most maligned musical instrument does not merit the sheer antipathy that is heaped upon it. Why, there is not anywhere a more versatile, portable, full-sounding instrument, aside from the violin, and maybe a few other things, to be found in the vast world of music. Capable of more sounds than a piano, and perfect as both lead and rhythm instrument, this complex and strange-looking bellow-and-reed contraption virtually dominated the musics of the world in the first half of the 20th Century, and had no contenders until electric guitars and synthesizers came around.
We who appreciate the accordions, whether as musicians, or fans of recorded and live music featuring squeezeboxes, must come together and share our appreciation and knowledge.
