Carlson: Kerry's "plan for Iraq such as it is to have dark skinned foreigners from the Middle East fight our war for us"

On July 30, the day after Senator John Kerry's acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention, CNN Crossfire host Tucker Carlson stated, "His [Kerry's] plan for Iraq, such as it is, is to have other people, dark skinned foreigners, from the Middle East fight our war for us. He said it last night in his speech. I watched his speech."

Savage: "I'm voting for Bush ... I'm a white, male, married heterosexual"; Dems are "a party of ethnic minorities and women and immigrants"

On his July 28 radio show, while commenting on the Democratic National Convention, Michael Savage announced that he would be voting for President George W. Bush in the November election and explained why.

NYT article on discredited Drudge story failed to report paper's own executive editor had debunked it

A July 30 New York Times article joined the echo chamber surrounding the discredited charge that Senator John Kerry (D-MA) reenacted Vietnam combat scenes on videotape for his future political ambitions. The attack was revived on July 28 by Internet gossip Matt Drudge on his highly trafficked website, The Drudge Report.

FOX's Barone said Kerry audience was "silent" on military-strength line -- but they cheered

Following FOX News Channel's live coverage of Senator John Kerry's (D-MA) acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention on July 29, U.S. News and World Report senior writer and FOX News Channel political contributor Michael Barone, who was reporting from the convention floor, asserted that during the speech "they cheered when he [Kerry] zinged Bush and when he called for military strength, they were silent."

FOX "hard news" host: Kerry's Senate record "really is an area of great vulnerability"

The day after Senator John Kerry's Democratic National Convention acceptance speech, Uma Pemmaraju -- host of FOX News Channel's "hard news daytime program," FOX News Now -- interviewed Weekly Standard editor William Kristol. Pemmaraju asked Kristol the following: "Do you think it was a mistake for Kerry to barely mention his time in the Senate in last night's speech knowing that his record really is an area of great vulnerability?"

"Media Matters," week of July 30

This week, Media Matters focuses on conservative misinformation in the media surrounding the Democratic National Convention in Boston. Convention viewers who watched and listened as speaker after speaker called for a reduction of the budget deficit, a strong and secure America, access to health care, effective and affordable education for our children, and compassionate and responsible care for our parents must have been confused to hear these views described in the media as "out of the mainstream."

Carlson attempted to downplay Republican attacks on Cleland

During coverage following Senator John Kerry's speech at the Democratic National Convention on July 29, CNN political analyst Tucker Carlson attempted to downplay Republican attacks leveled against former Senator Max Cleland (D-GA) -- who had introduced Kerry that night -- during Cleland's 2002 U.S. Senate race. On CNN's Larry King Live, in conversation with MTV News correspondent Gideon Yago, Carlson claimed, "[N]obody called him [Cleland] unpatriotic." Yet Cleland's opponent in the '02 race ran an attack ad featuring photos of Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein.

Wall Street Journal: "Berger Cleared of Withholding Material From 9/11 Commission"

Deficit deceit: Matthews falsely claimed "deficit is not being caused by tax cuts"

Responding to Senator John Kerry's (D-MA) July 29 acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention, in which Kerry indicated his plan to "cut the deficit in half in four years by ending tax giveaways that are nothing more than corporate welfare," MSNBC Hardball host Chris Matthews offered a false refutation.

FOX talking heads obsessed with Democratic "hate"

Immediately after FOX News Channel's broadcast of Senator John Kerry's (D-MA) acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention on July 29, as delegates in Boston's Fleet Center celebrated their nominee amid confetti and balloons, FOX News Channel political contributor and U.S. News and World Report senior writer Michael Barone summed up the delegates' reaction to Kerry by claiming, "This convention body is really more about hate." He insisted: "They haven't been in love with John Kerry throughout the primary period," even as his words were nearly drowned out by the festivities surrounding him.

Cables, right-wing radio ran with debunked Drudge charges on Kerry combat films

One day after Internet gossip Matt Drudge, on his website The Drudge Report, revived and expanded on the discredited charge that Senator John Kerry (D-MA) reenacted Vietnam combat scenes on videotape for his future political ambitions, the false charge spread through cable, radio, and Internet news outlets. The sources Drudge cited for the smear were a 1996 Boston Globe article and two books by known Kerry-bashers: retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Robert "Buzz" Patterson and anti-Kerry group Swift Boat Veterans for Truth founder John O'Neill. Yet in a September 7, 2002, column, The New York Times' current executive editor and then-columnist Bill Keller took up the issue of Kerry's wartime films and debunked this charge.

CNN amnesia: Forgot TNR report on Bush plans when Al Qaeda suspect arrested during Dem Convention

On July 29, CNN apparently forgot a major story the network had reported just three weeks earlier. On July 8, The New Republic posted to its website an article titled "July Surprise," which was written by TNR's John B. Judis, Spencer Ackerman, and Massoud Ansari and published in the July 19 issue of the magazine. Judis, Ackerman, and Ansari quoted two sources from Pakistan's intelligence service and another from its Interior Ministry (which handles the country's internal security) saying that the Bush administration was pressuring Pakistani officials to make arrests of so-called "high-value targets" (HVTs) during the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

Savage commentary on Dem Convention: "Obergrupenführer Clinton," "Grupenführer Carter," "Brigadeführer Daschle," "dirtbag" Maya Angelou

On the July 27 broadcast of Savage Nation, syndicated radio host Michael Savage's commentary on the Democratic National Convention was riddled with name-calling and insults.

Limbaugh's snow job on the Dem Convention

listen to an audio clip

On the opening day of the Democratic National Convention, right-wing radio host Rush Limbaugh labeled the event "the snow job in the summer." But in the days that followed, it was Limbaugh -- not the Democrats -- who buried the truth beneath a thick layer of lies and attacks.

Mitchell and Fineman mimicked GOP talking points on Edwards's foreign policy experience

Following Senator John Edwards's (D-NC) speech at the Democratic National Convention, a special edition of MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews featured a post-speech analysis by Howard Fineman (Newsweek chief political correspondent and NBC News analyst) and Andrea Mitchell (NBC News chief foreign affairs correspondent) that resembled Republican talking points questioning Edwards's foreign policy experience.

FOX's Browne repeated long-discredited RNC talking points as fact

Patti Ann Browne, anchor of FOX News Channel's FOX News Live, repeated as fact a misleading Republican National Committee (RNC) attack on Senator John Kerry's voting record on defense spending.

Hume cited "unscientific" poll in attempt to defend Wallace's Heinz Kerry ridicule

watch a video clip

On July 28, the same day Media Matters for America noted that FOX News Sunday host Chris Wallace had ridiculed Teresa Heinz Kerry's speech by referencing Eva Duarte de Perón (the late wife of Argentinean dictator Juan Perón), FOX News managing editor and chief Washington correspondent Brit Hume reported that Ms. magazine editor in chief Elaine Lafferty called on Wallace to apologize for his remarks.

Hannity wrong on tax cuts

On July 27, ABC Radio host Sean Hannity, in conversation with Teamsters president James P. Hoffa, falsely claimed that "[e]very American taxpayer got back the same amount of money" as a result of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, adding that "[e]very American that pays federal income tax got their $600." In fact, the tax cuts averaged substantially less than $600 annually (pdf) for almost half of American taxpayers, with high-income taxpayers receiving many times that.

Novak spread "most liberal" Kerry-Edwards distortion

On the July 28 edition of CNN's Crossfire, co-host Robert Novak fell in line with the Republican National Committee and other conservative pundits when he said the following to Senator Mark Pryor (D-AR): "Your ticket is the most liberal member of the Senate, [Senator John] Kerry, and the fourth most liberal, [Senator John] Edwards. Do you check your principles at the door when you're supporting a ticket like that?"

O'Reilly on Michael Moore's "power":
"[T]his happened in Nazi Germany"

watch a video clip

On his July 28 FOX News Channel show, aired live from the Democratic National Convention, host Bill O'Reilly asserted that author/documentarian Michael Moore has "more power than probably anybody else other than [Senators John] Kerry and [John] Edwards. ... You know this happened in Nazi Germany." And then O'Reilly once again compared Moore to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels.

Tucker Carlson's amnesia: "Nobody prevented anyone from voting" in Florida

CNN Crossfire co-host Tucker Carlson claimed on the July 27 edition of the show that "[n]obody prevented anyone from voting" in Florida during the 2000 presidential election. Carlson then added that the reason thousands of voters were purged from Florida's voter lists prior to the election was "[b]ecause they were convicted felons" -- an assertion contradicted by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights in its June 2001 report "Voting Irregularities in Florida During the 2000 Presidential Election."

In "World Exclusive," Drudge dredged up discredited charge that Kerry filmed reenacted combat scenes for future political career

On July 28, Internet gossip Matt Drudge revived and expanded on a discredited charge about Senator John Kerry (D-MA). On his highly trafficked website, The Drudge Report, Drudge reported that Kerry reenacted combat scenes on videotape during his service in the Vietnam War in order to enhance his future political ambitions. Drudge cited a 1996 Boston Globe article and two books by known Kerry-bashers: retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Robert "Buzz" Patterson and anti-Kerry group Swift Boat Veterans for Truth founder John O'Neill.

Savage rant: Compared Feldt to Goebbels; falsely claimed "illegal aliens" have voting rights

During a running commentary about the Democratic National Convention, syndicated radio host Michael Savage called convention speaker and Planned Parenthood President Gloria Feldt "the president of planned deathhood action fund" and compared her to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels, an epithet he and other conservatives have used in the past.

"The Democrats want Saddam back" and other Coulterisms

In her July 1 column, titled "Saddam In Custody -- Moore, Soros, Dean Still At Large," right-wing pundit Ann Coulter asserted, "[T]he Americanization of Iraq proceeds at an astonishing pace, the Iraqis are taking to freedom like fish to water. ... It's hard to say who's more upset about these developments: the last vestiges of pro-Hussein Baathist resistance in Iraq or John Kerry's campaign manager." Coulter's third paragraph? Conservatives resuscitated 1988 Kerry quote on Reagan years

On the day of former President Ronald Reagan's funeral, conservative media outlets circulated a quote by Senator John Kerry from a speech he gave at the 1988 Democratic National Convention in which he called the Reagan-Bush administration a period of "moral darkness." On May 19, The Washington Times published an op-ed by Bossie, which the newspaper bolstered with an editorial in support of his book's conclusions. Limbaugh told listeners that O'Beirne e-mailed him her column the night before and urged "every journalist in America" to read it. Limbaugh was moved by the column and shared his response to O'Beirne with listeners: "I wrote her back -- I said if I could include teardrops in email, I would do it, but I can't." He also posted a link to O'Beirne's column as the lead item on his website.

On May 10 -- while President George W. Bush, during his visit to the Pentagon, reacted with "deep disgust and disbelief" to new photos and video clips of the abuse of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. guards -- radio host Rush Limbaugh continued to downplay the severity of the prison abuse; suggested it was "decent punishment"; and questioned the sincerity of the outrage expressed by Democrats, the media, and the public. Limbaugh also once again referred to a "new website that's supposedly chronicling" what he says -- apparently Media Matters for America -- and called it "a central clearinghouse for out-of-context quotes."

Appearing on Al Franken's radio show on May 4, FOX News contributor Linda Chavez admitted that she "misspoke" when she denied having called Senator John Kerry a "communist apologist." Chavez denied having called Kerry a "communist apologist" during an interview on FOX & Friends on May 2, just four days after her nationally syndicated column calling Senator John Kerry a "communist apologist" appeared in newspapers and on The Heritage Foundation's website Townhall.com. Chavez appeared on The O'Franken Factor in response to a May 3 Media Matters for America report titled "FOX's Chavez called Kerry a 'communist apologist' -- and then lied about it."
