September 26, 2003 Poem for Arthur Kinoy By ELIOT KATZ The first time I saw him speak he'd arrived directly from a West Coast flight to talk to our Rutgers student activist conference. He looked frail, was about 5 feet tall, 70 years old, and was wearing a visible heart monitor. But in a booming unforgettable voice, he began: "Brothers & sisters! I am so glad to be here with you." At one point Arthur looked up & spotted a few students yawning. "I see," he scolded us, "that you have forgotten to put stamina on your agenda!" He reminded us that in the struggle to build real democracy in America we'd better be ready for a marathon, as well some fun short sprints. His speech was brilliant, inspiring, & a bit too long-- he looked up at another point: "I see you have forgotten to invite the one person who could shut me up, Chief Justice Warren Burger." When we invited him to smaller organizing meetings to give more intricate advice, he happily came--showing how some of our most intractable strategic problems had been solved by similar student groups in the 30's and 40's. There was no substitute for that kind of perspective or personal generosity. It was a heartfelt commitment that propelled him to fight for the Rosenbergs, labor unions, Fannie Lou Hamer, Chicago 8-- to oppose racial injustice by digging into Reconstruction's lost codebooks to grasp Law's most fleeting visionary moments, to represent the side of Utopia whenever history could be put on trial, to beat Nixon on key issue of activist wiretaps. America, let us remember that picture of Arthur Kinoy choked & thrown from HUAC hearings for refusing to sit & be quiet. Loud & boisterous is what Arthur said a people's lawyer should be whenever civil rights at stake. That photo helped show how unfair & mean-spirited those hearings were, how un-American they were, how thousands of burly censorship cops could never achieve the stature of one lone voice displaying courage & sanity of belief in better human possibilities. There's no substitute for an activist who gave so much to further freedom these past 60 years. When we are done mourning, which could take awhile, let's turn the bucket over. I didn't know Arthur as well as thousands of others did, but his insight & life energy were contagious, and I suspect he'd rather be remembered as a stepladder for change, than as a receptacle for our tears.
