Name Game
By STEW ALBERT

Patriot Act
a most dangerous virus
a program written by Bush
recreating itself
in every charity and nonprofit organization
as loyalty oath, purges,
a never ending list
of naming names.

First your doorman and neighbor became snoops
now watch out for you boss
or the guy giving you a hand out.
He's taking your picture.
He's frightened.
Alms for the love of Allah?
That might be a criminal offense.

Stew Albert runs the Yippie Reading Room. His memoir, Who the Hell is Stew Albert?, is just out from Red Hen Press. He can be reached at: stewa@aol.com

Outrageous hyperbole, per-

Road Markers
By DAVID KRIEGER

Baghdad, 21 July 2004 (Associated Press): "A roadside bomb exploded north of Baghdad early Wednesday, killing one U.S. 1st Infantry Division soldier and bringing to 900 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq since the beginning of military operations in March 2003."

We keep passing road markers
On the long, curved trail of death in Iraq.

There were one hundred thirty-eight dead American soldiers
When Bush, famously impersonating a combat pilot,
Proclaimed, Mission Accomplished.

Then it was two hundred, then three, four, five hundred.
Now we have passed the nine hundred marker
On the bitter trail of death.

Are we safer? Do they hate us less?
Perhaps this doesn't happen until we pass a thousand,
Or perhaps two or three or ten thousand.

Or perhaps not until as many Americans have died
As Iraqis we have killed, which may never happen.
Perhaps they will never hate us less.

Nor will we ever be safer
While we are dropping bombs on Iraqis, or Iranians,
Or North Koreans, or anyone.

What was the mission anyway?
What was it we accomplished so early on the trail of death?
And didn't Bush look dashing all dressed up for war?

David Krieger is president of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation.

To Defiance House
By JEFFREY ST. CLAIR

I find myself floating
On the ghost
Of two rivers,
Joined, buried
Alive, and left
Dead to the world-
But still
It quivers.

This is a true
Haunting, splayed
Open by sunlight
And green decay.
The boat's motor
Hums like a lynx,
A muffled pretense,
As it slits
Through this body
Of captive water,
Blending the reflections
Of the salmonfleshed
Rock with the cartoon-
Blue Utah skies
In savage collage.

Suddenly we submerge
Into false shadow,
A slot of canyon
So narrow
As to defy light-
Overhead
Bank swallows
Wheel and strafe,
Asserting provenance.
We bow our heads,
Staring deep
Into an engineer's
Dream of the future
At a level
Only the swallows
Once knew.

Nothing passes.

The vaults of sandstone
Weep black streaks,
From unseen gashes
High up in the maimed
Corridor. Iron oxide.
Desert varnish.
A natural process.
Like entropy or rust.

The Navajo say different:

Then the rivers
And the rocks
Were one.
Look, now!
They flow still
On the face
Of stone.

The canyon forks:
Divides itself
Once, then again
And yet again--
A bit of trickery
Worthy of coyote.
It's no use now.
The waterpath
Is marked
By scratches
Of white paint
On entrada buttresses
And shrouds of oil
From house boats
Shimmering on
The dead surface
Like scales of trout
Skin annealed
By the sun.

Then, far above,
Images flicker near
A shelter of stone:
Red men in white
Paint, shaking
Shields and spears,
Peer down
Heron-like:

Not warriors, these,
But defenders,
Tensed guardians
For memory
Of this carved world,
Dancing across
The marrow of Earth,

Defying this
Enforced stillness,
Prodding history
To recoil
And the songs
Of the rivers
Liberated
To lure us
Back to life.

Glen Canyon, September, 2001.
