In recent days I’ve found that my favorite blogger at the moment is Richard of Peking Duck, and it’s not just because we have a friendship developing. For one, he’s an Asian “geo” blogger (I’m not sure I really like that term). Secondly, he’s an American expatriate who sees me pretty much eye-to-eye on the American government. Just to make sure things get fun, he disagrees with me starkly on China’s future. Which is all fun and good, because it’s obvious that he’s caught the China flu, and I’m finding his writings when his fever jumps very rewarding. For example, this from his most recent post: “No, there was never a shortage of blog material in the PRC. In fact, from my memory bank alone, I could blog about China for years and years to come,“
I’ve noticed this about a lot of people. They come to the mainland for a short time, and even if they profess to hate it like Richard, they find something intriguing and rewarding. The memories. It's like a place you come to experience something new and different and walk away finding that the salient point wasn’t the exotic nature of the country but what you saw in yourself while you were there. Like a mirror, it shows you yourself in it’s plain reflection. And I can attest for the material I have that’s worth blogging. There is just so much to write about. The only problem, Richard? Overwhelming your readers. |
