Biology Biology
This is a nice book, though a bit tough for the unknowledgable person. This is supposed to be a general biology book, used by people without any prior knowledge of biology too, but I somehow don't know if they'll find it too easy. But other than that one drawback, i think that the rest of us will appreciate this book for what it's worth. It's nicely written, with a lot of illustrations and explainations. There are also many references to websites and stuff, so it's additionally useful. Depend...

Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers
Roach's book is fun. For those wanting to delve more deeply into the forensic side of human cadavers, read CORPSE, by Jessica Snyder Sachs. Corpse goes much farther, in a scientific yet lively way, into exploring the world of the entomologists, botanists, anthropologists, and pathologists who study the "ecology" of human remains.

The Tree of Life : Charles Darwin The Tree of Life : Charles Darwin
Here is a fascinating, detailed look at the life of Charles Darwin: naturalist, geologist, and independent thinker. In his author's note, Caldecott Honor illustrator Peter Sis (Starry Messenger, Tibet: Through the Red Box) writes that Darwin always regretted not learning how to draw. However, he could and did take "dense and vivid" written notes, from which Sis drew his inspiration. Readers will spend hours poring over the gorgeous, intricately crafted pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations...

Microbiology: An Introduction, Eighth Edition Microbiology: An Introduction, Eighth Edition
I was surprised to open my parcel to find the study guide instead of the textbook. There is NOTHING in the description that explains as so. Very dissapointed as I need the text for an exam.

Molecular Biology of the Cell Molecular Biology of the Cell
This book is highly regarded by professors and students alike as the finest textbook on the subject matter. It is the required textbook in many universities for both undergraduate and graduate courses in cell biology and biochemistry.I studied biology using the earlier edition of this text (when Drs. Dennis Bray and James Watson were co-authors)and even had Dr. Alberts as one of my teachers (he is an excellent instructor by the way!). As with this new edition, it provides clear, illustrative ...

Molecular Cell Biology Molecular Cell Biology
This edition of Molecular Cell Biology represents the tremendous effort of the authors in presenting the concepts of many important cutting edges of molecular biology. Some references are from "1999" publication. The size of the text is smaller than the previous edition because some of the sections are omitted. Most of them deal with the classical experiments that give rise to the modern concepts of particular topics that we know much about nowadays. If you would like to learn more, you can e...

DNA : The Secret of Life DNA : The Secret of Life
What makes DNA different from hordes of competitors purporting to help readers understand genetics is that it is written by none other than James Watson, of Watson and Crick fame. He and his co-author Andrew Berry have produced a clear and easygoing history of genetics, from Mendel through genome sequencing. Watson offers readers a sense of immediacy, a behind-the scenes familiarity with some of the most exciting developments in modern science. He gleefully reports on the research jugg...

Modern Genetic Analysis: Integrating Genes and Genomes Modern Genetic Analysis: Integrating Genes and Genomes
Anthony Griffiths is the principle author of both 'An Introduction to Genetic Analysis' and 'Modern Genetic Analysis.' The former book is in its sixth edition, while the later is in it's second. I highly recommend both textbooks as the best teaching texts I have ever come across. Personally however, I prefer using 'Modern Genetic Analysis' because it is easier to understand, and less frustrating and confusing for students. The 'Introduction to Genetic Analysis' textbook is larger, more annota...

Lonely Planets : The Natural Philosophy of Alien Life Lonely Planets : The Natural Philosophy of Alien Life
I hate to say it but I did not write the original review under my name. David sent me a copy of his book (which he signed with a picture of a bug-eyed alien smoking a joint) and it's a fine (if somewhat chatty) missive to the human species regarding all the latest thinking on ETs, from Roswell to Ball's Zoo hypothesis that we are being watched, perhaps by nearby probes, at close range. Originally I was piqued that he would write, in proofs at least, and without explanation, that my books were...

Sync: The Emerging Science of Spontaneous Order Sync: The Emerging Science of Spontaneous Order
Sync is like a report from the trenches. And you like this report because it's clear, fun, and brings good news. There's this undercurrent of activity in the burgeoning realm of complex systems that's more and more bubbling to the surface, and Sync is a big bubble. There's been a quiet stream of books bringing this realm to our attention, showing novel methods, interesting results, and surprising ways our lives may be changed and affected by it, such as Waldrop's 1992 Complexity, Levy's 1994 A...
