Homophone Fun

It's been a while since I've done this. . . .

"Do you suspect fowl play?"

Yes I do -- complete with a side of mashed potatoes and a remake of the great escape. Now I like poultry as much as the next person but I don't automatically suspect them of frolicing joyfully or putting on a production of MacBeth.

"I don’t care what it cost. I’ll pay the damn lean myself if necessary,"

Now they mean lien -- like a lien on a house. But this sentence inspires pictures of painfully thin loan sharks. ^_^

"Scattered amongst the gathered group are several stacks of ancient tombs."

Picture piles upon piles of crypts and sacrophogi staucked up in your living room. Because that is the picture in my head. How 'bout yours?

"Amanda is still weaving an incredibly intricate tail of her and Logan’s first meeting."

Wouldn't that hurt? From Owning pets, I know they don't like to have their tails pulled, much less woven.

You Are a New School Democrat

You like partying and politics - and are likely to be young and affluent.

You're less religious, traditional, and uptight than most Democrats.

Smoking pot, homosexuality, and gambling are all okay in your book.

You prefer that the government help people take care of themselves.

Yanked from Lady Macbeth

NOTICE OF REVOCATION OF INDEPENDENCE TO CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

In light of your failure to make the correct decision in electing your President, thus showing you to be unfit to govern yourselves, we hereby give you notice of the revocation of your independence effective as of Monday 15th November 2004.

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths and other territories. Except Utah, which she doesn't much fancy.

Your new Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Tony Blair M.P., for the 97.85% of you unaware of the outside world, will appoint a Minister for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire will be circulated in twelve months time to determine if any of you noticed.

To aid your transition into a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

1. All citizens are to look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary. While there, check the pronunciation guide for "aluminium" - this may be surprising for you. Generally attempt to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. Look up "vocabulary". Using the same 27 words interspersed with "like" and "you know" is an unacceptable form of communication. Look up "interspersed".

2. There is no such thing as "U.S. English". We will let Microsoft know on your behalf.

3. Learn to distinguish British and Australian accents. It's not difficult.

4. Hollywood will henceforth be required to occasionally cast Englishmen as good guys.

5. Re-learn your original anthem, "God Save the Queen". Please ensure that you have complied with the first law before attempting this.

6. Stop playing American "football". There is only one kind of "football". What you refer to as "football" is not a very good game. The 2.15% of you aware of a world outside of your borders may have noticed that no one else plays it. Play proper football instead; to start with get the girls to help you - it is a difficult game. Those of you brave enough will, eventually, be allowed to play rugby, which is similar to American "football", but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full Kevlar body armour like nancies.

7. Declare war on Quebec and France, using nukes if they give you any merde. The 97.85% of you unaware of the outside world should count yourselves lucky - the Russians have never really been bad guys. "Merde" is French for "sh*t".

8. 4th July is no longer a public holiday. 2nd November will be the new national holiday.

9. American cars are hereby banned. They are crap; it's for your own good. When we show you German cars you'll understand.

10. Please tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us crazy.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CO-OPERATION.

Interesting

Does anyone else other than me find it interesting that Bush's cabinet members are fleeing the administration like rats abandoning a sinking ship? Six members out of fifteen, and the month isn't over yet.

So Far we have
Colin Powell -- Sec. of State
Rod Paige - Education
Spence Abraham - Energy (I really don't like this guy)
Ann Veneman - Agriculture
John Ashcroft - Attorney General
Don Evans - Commmerce

And according to the pundits, more people are expected to resign.

Gotta love politics.

I did it

I voted.

Based off of what people have told me of the lines that strech for blocks on Election Day, I took advantage of Early voting this morning.

I am lucky that I have a job that will let me do this instead of being three hours late on election day. I know that work can penalize me for voting, but still I like having voted since I won't be able to this weekend.

Making Pillows

Ok now that I have figured out how to use my mom's 40+ year old sewing machine, now I get to practice with it using different fabrics, tensions, and stitches. Which of course means that I am making pillows before I graduate myself up to simple patterns. I haven't sewed on a machine since High school, so I am massively out of practice.

I made one pillow today using very slippery chinese fabric. It is nice and squishy and I even managed to sew it shut on the machine. It looks nice. I just need to get some gold cord and sew it along the seam to hide my edges.

So our house is going to have lots of Pillows and everyone is likely to get one for Yule. And I am getting lots of experience. Which I so need.

Next up is a simple shift dress.

Saturdays don't come often enough

Seriously. Saturdays are for cleaning and working in the yard or writing if the weather is bad. And right now the weather is gorgeous. It is in the 70s, which is great. It isn't too hot or too cold and you aren't braving heat exhaustion everytime you venture outside.

Rhianikki killed a rake this week so we picked up a new one yesterday along with two more roses, several mums, and lots of marigolds. Rhianikki's current project is thinning the front yard. So she has been ripping up ground cover like mad. We are attmepting to save some things, but most of it is getting uprooted and carted to the side of the road. I weeded the rose bed and planted the two new ones along with the mums. Then I started pruning. I am not done. I got sidetracked by the idea of an additional berm-like area. We moved the rocks that we had uprooted a few weeks ago to allow for the use of a lawnmower and I created a new flowerbed. Tomorrow I get to plant more.

Mom is down for a conference and so we got to see her this weekend. And thanks to parental bounty, I now have two pairs of work shoes (which I needed) and a new hat (which is super cute but not necessary). We then went to a restaurant called Ran-Getsu (which supposedly has another branch in Tokyo's Ginza District) where we had Shabu-Shabu and Mom had Teriyaki.

The Shabu Shabu was fun. And I want to try the sukiyaki next time.

Life is good right now. Tomorrow is Dim Sum, Verizon (ugh), and sewing.

Raises hand -- this is way too true right now

Italics ones are the ones that apply to me personally

You might be a Floridian if:

You exhibit a slight twitch when introduced to anyone with the first names of Charley, Frances, Ivan, or Jeanne.

Your freezer never has more than $20 worth of food in it any given time.

You're looking at paint swatches for the plywood on your windows, to accent the house color.

You think of your hall closet/safe room as "cozy".

Your pool is more accurately described as "framed in" than "screened in".

Your freezer in the garage now only has homemade ice in it.

You no longer worry about relatives visiting during the summer months.

You too haven't heard back from the insurance adjuster.

You now understand what that little "2% hurricane deductible" phrase really means.

You're putting a collage together on your driveway of roof shingles from your neighborhood.

You were once proud of your 16" electric chain saw.

Your Street has more than 3 "NO WAKE" signs posted.

You now own 5 large ice chests.

You recognize people in line at the free ice, gas and plywood locations.

You stop what you're doing and clap and wave when you see a convoy of power company trucks come down your street.

You have the personal cell phone numbers of the managers for: plywood, roofing supplies and generators at Home Depot on your speed dialer.

You've spent more than $20 on "Tall white kitchen bags" to make your own sand bags.

You're considering upgrading your 16" to a 20" chainsaw.

You know what "Bar chain oil" is.

You're thinking of getting your wife the hardhat with the ear protector and face shield for Christmas.

You now think the $6000 whole house generator seems reasonable.

You look forward to discussions about the merits of "cubed, block and dry ice".

Your therapist refers to your condition as "generator envy".

You fight the urge to put on your winter coat and wool cap and parade around in front of your picture window, when you finally get power and your neighbor across the street, with the noisy generator doesn't get electric.

You view lawn chairs, garden flags and bird feeders as the enemy.

You park your car in the middle of deserted shopping center parking lot with no trees and walk home.

You spend 3 days in a debate with your extended family over who has the safest house.

Your prime time television hour is spent watching the weather channel.

Your annual vacation plan is to spend the month of September in Montana.

You think candles are the perfect gift for every occasion.

An 8:00 curfew for adults is no big deal.

You have one entire kitchen drawer filled to the brim with every size of battery ever made.

When you say your prayers, the last line is always "God, please let that damned thing go to Texas."

Before you park your car, you look up.

News I find funny

While scrolling through MSN I happened upon an article that talks about the film "Stage Beauty" which as an aside looks interesting, but is not really the thrust of my post.

The headliners are Billy Crudup and Claire Danes. And during filming the two hooked up because their offscreen chemistry was as strong as their onscreen to such a degree that Crudup left Mary Louise Parker (who was pregnant at the time) to hook up with Danes. What I found amusing is this -- Billy Crudup played Ashitaka to Claire Danes' San in Princess Mononoke.

Yes, now in real life, San and Ashitaka have gotten together.

Call me odd that this actually struck me as amusing.

I had to . . . .

You Know You're From Michigan When...

You define summer as three months of bad sledding.

You think Alkaline batteries were named for a Tiger outfielder.

You can identify an Ohio accent.

Your idea of a seven-course meal is a six pack and a bucket of smelt.

Owning a Japanese car is a hanging offense in your hometown.

You know how to play (and pronounce) Euchre.

The Big Mac is something that you drive across.

You believe that "down south" means Toledo.

You bake with soda and drink pop.

You drive 75 on the highway and you pass on the right.

Your Little League baseball game was snowed out.

You learned how to drive a boat before you learned how to ride a bike.

You know how to pronounce "Mackinac".

The word "thumb" has a geographical rather than an anatomical significance.

You have experienced frostbite and sunburn in the same week.

You expect Vernor's when you order ginger ale.

You know that Kalamazoo not only exists, but that it isn't far from Hell and Climax.

Your favorite holidays are Christmas, Thanksgiving, the opening of deer season and Devil's Night.

Your snowmobile, lawn mower and fishing boat all have big block Chevy engines.

At least one person in your family disowns you for the week of the Michigan/Michigan State football game.

You know what a millage is.

Traveling coast to coast means driving from Port Huron to Muskegon.

Half the change in your pocket is Canadian, eh.

You show people where you grew up by pointing to a spot on your left hand.

You know what a "Yooper" is.

Your car rusts out before you need the brakes done

Half the people you know say they are from Detroit... yet you don't personally know anyone who actually lives in Detroit

"Up North" means north of Clare.

You know what a pastie is.

You occasionally cheer "Go Lions- and take the Tigers with you."

Snow tires come standard on all your cars.

At least 25% of your relatives work for the auto industry.

You don't understand what the big deal about Chicago is.

Octopus and hockey go together as naturally as hot dogs and baseball.

You know more about chill factors and lake effect than you'd EVER like to know!

Your snowblower has more miles on it than your car.

Shoveling the driveway constitutes a great upper body workout.

When giving directions, you refer to "A Michigan Left."

You know when it has rained because of the smell of worms.

You never watch the Weather Channel - you can just assume they're wrong.

The snowmen you make in your front yard actually freeze. Solid.

The snow freezes so hard that you can actually walk across it and not break it or leave any marks.

All your shoes are called "tennis shoes", even though no one here plays tennis anyway.

Your major school field trip includes camping and cross-country skiing.

Half your friends have a perfect sledding hill right in their own backyard.

You actually get these jokes and pass them on to other friends from Michigan.

I'm back -- Yay power crews.

Frances was much nicer to us than Charley. But It was crueler to others. Jill, from work, her house is probably going to collapse. I made it fine, but the all of the rain from the storm is what is hurting most people.

We were lucky, again.

Although experiencing 36 hours of hurricane force winds is something I never want to do again.

Let's hope Ivan gives us a miss.

EDIT: Scratch that -- we don't have power. It got knocked out less than 24 hours later and hasn't been back up since.

You're Colorado!

You really enjoy getting high. Even though it's often a lot of work, the
view from the top is almost always worth the effort. Your distance from others makes
your relationship with them rather rocky at times, but they do look up to you. Be very
careful around schools. And stop being quite so focused on the number 5,280!

TV theme

Apparently not only is the Fourth of July time to show parades, fireworks, and military films. But it is also the day of Shark Movies/Documentaries. On four different channels I have seen the following -- Mystery Shark Attack, Calling All Sharks, Jaws, and Deep Blue Sea. And I only had the TV on for two and a half hours today.

Now it may be just me, but that seems to be a lot of shark themed programming.

Because of course nothing celebrates our country's independence better than showing people being rendered limb from limb by a shark.

And you know that I watched. They're puippies. And I love puppies. With big pointy teeth.

My true translation skills have finally been discovered!

You are 43% geek
You are a geek liaison, which means you go both ways. You can hang out with normal people or you can hang out with geeks which means you often have geeks as friends and/or have a job where you have to mediate between geeks and normal people. This is an important role and one of which you should be proud. In fact, you can make a good deal of money as a translator.
Normal: Tell our geek we need him to work this weekend.

You [to Geek]: We need more than that, Scotty. You'll have to stay until you can squeeze more outta them engines!

Geek [to You]: I'm givin' her all she's got, Captain, but we need more dilithium crystals!

You [to Normal]: He wants to know if he gets overtime.

webpage

I updated/redesigned my webpage. I am still in the process of reuploading all of my fics to the site as well as making two completely new sections.

But I've decided that I am going to pretty much devote my site to fanfiction since I don't get that much bandwidth and text eats up a lot less than pictures and other files. And I don't feel like paying for a site if I can help it. Cheapskate, me? Why whatever gave you that impression?

Anyway it's up. It's less personal -- except for the about me section. But I now have pictures of me actually up.

be impressed.

I be confuzzled

When did I start liking J-pop?

And why?

And why is it that I can't stand Pop and R&B; music in English but like it in Japanese, Chinese, and Korean?

I think that I am sick.

Noooooo......

Barbie and Ken are breaking up! After 43 years they are calling it splitsville. Read about it here.

If she can't make it with her proportions, what chance do the rest of us have?

It's the little things

I don't know why, but seeing anime/manga mentioned in such mainstream magazines as Time gives me a little thrill. This week's issue has a little 3/4 page blurb about the rise of shojo manga and specifically mentions Fruits Basket and Fushigi Yuugi. And I just got so happy to see Tohru holding Yuki & Kyo in the table of contents that I just had to tell my roommate.

I love that anime is slowly becoming more mainstream and accepted. I cheered when Spirited Away won the Oscar. I shrieked when I heard of the Anime Network. I crowed when CN announced Bebop on Adult Swim. Heck I loved that Matthew Sweet used anime for "girlfriend" I'm not upset that anime is attracting new fans and "destroying the purity" of it. I would love to see the day when people didn't feel the need for fansubs or digisubs because the anime would be readily availible.

Kinda unrealistic, huh? But I can hope. After all, it wasn't that long ago when the only anime you could find was Akira and Urotsokudoji. ^_^

BTW to my friends in the industry, I just want to say "thank you!" for giving me the little things in life that make me smile.
