So, Prisoner of Azkaban then. On the whole I liked lots, even though I had issues with some of the adaptation. Need to see it again soon cos for quite a lot of the run time I was concentrating on the fact that I was desperate for the Ladies but couldn't bear to miss anything. Ahem. But yeah, thoughts: ( POA likes and dislikes ) |

Went to see Prisoner of Azkaban. More of which in the morning when I'm awake. July issue of Maxim with the Euro 2004 special. Buy. Ghastly rampant laddishness and letters page asserting that half the readership would so steal Jo off Danny if they could (in your dreams, boys) aside, they have a nice pic of Stevie cuddling his new boots. And a nice little interview (if you can get past the comedy haircuts digression) in which he calls the orc a bitter blue (ha!), muses that you have to be good-looking like Becks to get away with Experimental Hair and promises to bollock the rest of the team if they don't pull their weight in Portugal. There's also an Umbro ad on the inside cover with Mikey, David James and John Terry where they all have glowing eyes like the lads in the Total Eclipse of the Heart video. Which is sort of hot in a 'didn't this used to frighten the bejesus out of Zan' way. |

Well that was a bit blah, wasn't it? Still, 25th England goal and ahead of Geoff Hurst for Mikey so muted huzzahs. |

It's a pity Anna's finished her seminar on the idiosyncracies of Scouse, cos there's a great thread on YNWA here about the generational shifts in the accent. I dunno, everyone else in my family thinks it's the ugliest sound in the world, but I've always loved it. I even used to get tingly when Why Don't You? was coming from Liverpool. S'probably a major subconscious reason for me picking the Reds to support... |

Stevie and Carra on the Big Change, on the official site: Steven Gerrard today insisted the next three months represent the most important period in Liverpool's recent history. With a new manager on the way and possible new investment into the club, the Reds' skipper is excited about the future at Anfield, but he says the board of directors need to make the right decisions to ensure the team are as well prepared as possible for a title challenge next year. Gerrard said: "The next three months are going to be really crucial for Liverpool, as important as they have ever been, with the appointment of the new manager and the quality of players they bring in. "For every single player, for the board of directors and for the chairman himself, it's a massive decision. "The press has been dominated by who should be the next manager but for me the most important thing is getting the right players. A manager can only improve a team a certain amount. We need good players to improve on the last three seasons. We need new players in each department, defence, midfield and attack. "There will be a lot of people applying for the job which is a good thing. It is a job which is going to attract a lot of managers across the world. "I'm sure the chairman and the chief executive will want to know the team's views and feelings. My mobile is on for them to call me when the time is right!" While being excited by the future at Liverpool under a new manager with new ideas, Gerrard admits he feels for Gerard Houllier after the Frenchman lost his job last week. He said: "I have spoken to Gerard at length since the decision. It typified the kind of person he is that he never really spoke about himself. "He just went on about me, told me to keep doing what I have been doing. He was being a father figure to me again, just as he has been for the past six years. "I thanked him for all the things he has done for me. I wished him all the luck. We both have to move on now." Carragher may be away with the England squad in Sardinia, but he is well aware of the speculation back home on who will replace Gerard Houllier as Liverpool boss. The Reds defender admits he was sad to see Houllier go, but he says he's excited by what the future holds at Anfield. "Gerard Houllier made a big impact on my career, on and off the pitch. I've got a great deal of thanks with what he's done for me and we've been successful with him," added Carragher. "But the last couple of years have been disappointing, no-one can deny that. It was the board's decision and you always have to do what's best for the club. "I'm sure a new manager will have different ideas and will be able to get a bit more out of certain players, because every managerbrings different things. "That's what we will be looking for. That certain players who maybe aren't doing as well now, he can give them a lift and give five or 10% extra to their performances. "To finish 30 points behind Arsenal was very disappointing for us and we're looking to bridge that gap next season with a new manager and maybe some ideas can get us closer." The Liverpool Echo also adds the following from Carra's interview: Carragher believes the Liverpool manager's post is still one of the biggest jobs in European football, even if the club have not won the title for 14 years. "All the coaches around will remember when they were younger and were watching Liverpool, so I think the club has a great name throughout the world and I'm sure it will attract a lot of top names," he said. "It's the board's decision. I'm sure they will take their time on that. As long as he picks me, that's the only preference that I've got!" Carra, it's the same drill with the new manager as with Sven - if you and Danny don't get picked, I throw dead fish at his head. If that doesn't work, I shall throw live fish. With big teeth. |

My god, Woodgate looks about 80 on his. They must not like him much. The thought occurs that if there's a Woodgate one they struck these before the squad was announced, in which case there may not be a Carra one. If this is so, I shall be forced to chastise them. *yearns for a Stevie* *hatstand* I've bought some Wonder Woman pyjamas. */hatstand* |

On YNWA: Bootle Buck: Even in his press conference yesterday GH couldn't get away from saying my players. Let's face it people like Owen, Gerrard, Carra and the new players like Pongolle and Le Tallec were and still are very young when they come to Anfield. He has been like a Father figure to them and I am sure has helped them in the personal lives as well as their football lives. It must be sad to see someone you admire get bashed by the media and fans and then let go by the club. However, as young as they are they will show great professionalism in getting on with the job ahead of them. They may only be 22 or 23 but they have the heads of 35 year olds. Ivan the Red: You been looking in Carra's fridge? I TOLD him people would notice... |

I want Stevie's hoody. I want it now: |

I'm feeling slightly better cos my new home shirt arrived today. With Murphy 13 on the back. Otherwise, I just want them to finalise the new manager now. As far as I can see we could be waiting anything from two days to a month before we know, which can't be good for a) squad morale or b) new signings. And as far as I can see we've got a shortlist of about 8. yeeshk, it's gonna be a long summer... |

I hate not being able to get on LiveJournal at work. When I heard the news at lunchtime I was steaming angry. I could have written pages. Now I'm just numb. I just want to say this. Gerard Houllier taught me what it meant to be a Liverpool supporter. It was during his tenure that this stopped being a student affectation for me and became real honest-to-goodness obsession. Thanks to him I saw us lift trophies for the first time. When people ask me why I support Liverpool, as an out-of-towner, I say 'because they represent everything that is good about English football', and it's thanks to Gerard that that reputation is still intact. When he came, we were the Spice Boys. The squad prided themselves on the fact that 'win lose or draw, we were always first at the bar'. One player told then manager Roy Evans that he was going to miss training for a modelling assignment and when told this would incur a four-figure fine, simply wrote the cheque out there and then. Phil Thompson, on his first day as Gerard's assisstant manager, produced the medals he'd won with the club and said to the squad 'This is what playing for Liverpool means'. 'No', said then captain Paul Ince, producing his wallet, 'this is what playing for Liverpool means.' Gerard changed all that. Within a year, Ince and the infamous fashion model were history. In their place were players who would go on to become the spine of the new side: Sami Hyypia, Stephane Henchoz, Dietmar Hamann among others. Gerard didn't just ask about the players' ability on the pitch when he took over, he wanted reports of their conduct off it, right down to whether or not they were polite to the catering staff. He had our Melwood training ground completely refurbished and modernised. With his help, Michael went from being a prodigy of enormous potential with no left foot and persistent hamstring problems to an acknowledged world class striker, the first Liverpool player to be named European Footballer of the Year. When he arrived, Carra was a central midfielder being played out of position and best known for cavorting with strippers and scoring own goals for Man United. He's now our longest serving player, one of the first names on the teamsheet (look how many clean sheets we picked up after he came back from injury), and now, picked for the England team for Euro 2004. He was the one who knew just how hard to push Danny to turn him from an overweight, undermotivated, ill-disciplined Spice Boy into the dedicated model professional he is today. The first time he visited the Academy as manager, he was told to watch out for a young defender called Stephen Wright (lovely lad, now at Sunderland) who might be ready to move up to the first team. As the gaffer himself puts it: 'There was this little guy in midfield, lean and agressive, yap, yap, yap on at others, boys older than him. I like that kind. I said "He comes to me."' Needless to say, he was looking at a different Steven. 'They said: "No, not him, he has too many problems, with his back, with his muscles." But we worked with him.' He didn't just work with him. Gerard knew when to bring Steven Gerrard to Melwood, when to put him in the first team, when to give him a public dressing down when it looked like the adulation might be going to his head (heavily criticised at the time, but judging by how Stevie responded, not a bad idea, eh?), and most of all, when he was ready to be made captain. As Europe watches Stevie take teams apart in Portugal this summer, he for one won't forget who put him there. He gave us our pride back. He gave us trophies. He gave us a reason to sing again. I don't care who comes in to replace him. I want my gaffer back. |

That I've got the day off (going to see Macbeth at Stratford) That Carra's new baby daughter is called Mia. *Vince* Good name! */end Vince* This thread on YNWA which begins as a discussion on new signings and then inexplicably devolves into a series of paraphrased Withnail quotes, to the bemusement of posters who haven't seen the film. Gerard Houllier will now be forever known to me as Presumin' Ged. My grandad giving me the Euro 2004 medals he gets at Sainsburys. So far I've got Mikey and the Orc. Mikey looks like one of those generic portraits of the Emperor Augustus and Orc's mum must shop at Sainsbury's cos his looks more like Robert Redford than his inimitable self, heheheh. |

For the inspiration of anyone intending to write fics involving the England team in Euro 2004, check out the official website for their hotel: Solplay Hotel Second link down in the left hand box takes you to the homepage and lets you choose your language, and very swish it looks too. On the one hand, it makes me pine for Danny even more because they have apartments, the largest of which feature, and I quote '2 bedrooms (double and/or twin) and 2 bathrooms, a living room with kitchenette and balcony.' So that's only the arse-ness of Sven preventing me from having a summer of STEVIE AND DANNY AND MIKEY AND CARRA SHARING A FLAT. AAARRRRGGGH. In an attempt to wean myself off this wondrous vision I'm telling myself that Carra would only complain about the noise of Stevie and Danny's joyous lovemaking. And on the other hand, the Local Information section has given me some nice ideas for where Danny can stay when he's doing his incognito moral support thing. |

Well, it was pretty much 99% perfect. I got a The Dreaming graphic novel from my mate at work. My package from Amazon arrived with Pratchett-y, Master & Commander-y, Franz Ferdinand-y goodness. I started spending my birthday money - ordering a new Liverpool shirt and buying the new Streets CD. My brother got me...are you ready for this...a portable TV/radio shaped like a football. A red and white football. No foolin'. Ye gods, how'm I s'posed to top that for his birthday? Went to see Infernal Affairs at our local Arts Centre which was cool and now I crave Andy Lau's fabulous sinewy body. Carra got picked for England :D Which brings me of course, to why it was only 99% perfect...no prizes for guessing who didn't get picked, because SVEN IS AN IDIOT. Who will rue the day the moment we end up in a penalty shootout. As always, I have expressed my frustration the only way I know how: ( Hold Your Head Up High ) And a big big thank you to everyone who's wished me a happy birthday :) |

Well, I have been 27 for a couple of hours now and so far I'm liking it a lot :) It has lovely sunny weather. It has BBC 6 Music playing 'Turning Japanese' and an archive session of The Las doing 'There She Goes' live. It has redfireborn making me Mikey/Carra screencaps. It has presents! So far I've had: A lovely little pink makeup case from Penhaligons (swank) from my brother's girlfriend, with four little Penhaligons perfume samples for me to pick a favourite Two sleeveless tops from Mum and Dad. Very pink and girly, but they're by Ben Sherman so they're still git 'ard :) A really unexpected cash windfall! I've got enough to get a new home shirt with Murphy 13 on the back and still have plenty left over for DVDs and nice things from Lush. Result! And it has delayed action presents! Because Mum got me some CDs from Amazon that haven't arrived yet and my brother got me something but he's not out of bed yet, so...more to come! But there's no doubt I'd go without all of it if it would guarantee Carra and Danny getting picked for the England squad. Cross everything, people! |

Berdoing sums it up perfectly on YNWA: The reason people don't like Danny Murphy is that because he's local, isn't particularly flashy and isn't particularly fast, they think he is one of them.. people think "I could do the job Danny Murphy is doing, and I'm 45!". Well, you can't. And you won't. And he does. TESTIFY!!! |

Phew...well, I no it didn't matter if we didn't win, but it would have been nice to end on a win, so I'm glad we got the equaliser there. On the whole, I think the lads took their foot off the gas knowing we were safe, which is understandable given how many of them want to avoid injury before the Euro 2004 squads are announced (Monday for the England team! ohpleaseohpleaseohplease)...but it meant the final game was just satisfying rather than a rousing send off. Still...all together now...there's always next season ;) Watched the whole of the lap of honour and while there were some nice Mikey/Carra moments, no Stevie/Danny because Stevie was giving Lily-Ella her first outing. In a little Liverpool kit :) Don't worry, there'll be pics soon enough. So Danny kind of hung back in a Legolas-handing-Arwen-to-Aragorn kind of way (*sniffle*) |
