WAMU offers live audio streams compatible with Windows Media at 20kbps and both MP3 and Real Audio at 32kbps. Our online archives are available only in Real Audio at 24kbps and you will need the free Real One player.

At the moment we are conducting tests to improve the service. Known issues will be posted here as soon as we can resolve them so, please check our FAQ's below. If you do not find your answer there, please Let us know.

In order to stream successfully with Windows Media we recommend the following configurations:

    Microsoft Windows PC
  • Media Player: Version 9 (Windows 98 users must use version 7.1)
  • OS: 98, 98SE, 2000, XP (recommended)
  • Speed: 233 mhz or greater = Pentium 2 (and above) or AMD
  • Memory: 64MB minimum
  • Hard Disk: at least 100MB free
  • Sound Card: 16 bit
  • Modem: 28k minimum
    Apple Macintosh
  • Media Player: Version 9 (OS 9 users must use version 7.1)
  • OS: 9, 10.1 and greater
  • Speed: PowerPC 603e 180 MHz or higher processor
  • Memory: 32MB minimum
  • Hard Disk: at least 10MB free

I cannot hear anything.

Please make sure you read the minimum requirments first.

The most common problem when nothing will work is a confused system. Your browser (most likely Internet Explorer) doesn't know what to do with the Windows Media stream. Here's how you solve this problem:

    Microsoft Windows PC
  • Right-click on your "Start" menu and choose "Explore"
  • In the "Tools" menu select "Folder Options"
  • In the "File Types" tab locate under "Extensions" the letters "ASX"
  • Select "ASX" and click "change"
  • When the window pops up, select "Windows Media Player" and click "OK"
  • In the "File Types" tab click "OK"
  • If you still cannot listen, let us know

I can hear it but the sound cuts out often.

If you are on a dialup modem there isn't a lot of room for the audio signal, especially if you are looking at webpages. For example - if you have a 56k modem (the best modems usually only get 44k) and the stream is 20k You only have about 24k left over to use. The best thing you can do is to set a higher "buffer". A "buffer" stores extra seconds of audio so if there is a disruption - you won't hear it. To set your "buffer" higher:

    Microsoft Windows PC
  • Open Windows Media Player
  • On the "Tools" menu choose "options"
  • Find the "Performance" tab and under "Network Buffering" set the buffer to 30 seconds.
    Apple Macintosh
  • Open Windows Media Player
  • Click on "Windows Media Player" on the menu and choose "Preferences"
  • Under "Network Settings" set the buffer to 30 seconds

In order to stream successfully with MP3 we recommend the following configurations:

    Microsoft Windows PC
  • OS: 98 (not recommended) 98SE, 2000, XP (recommended)
  • MP3 Player: Windows Media, iTunes or Winamp
  • Speed: 500 mhz or greater = Pentium 2 (and above) or AMD
  • Memory: 128 MB RAM minimum/256 RAM recommended
  • Hard Disk: at least 100MB free
  • Sound Card: 16 bit
  • Modem: 56k modem minimum
    Apple Macintosh
  • OS: 9 or 10.1.5 and greater (recommended)
  • MP3 Player: iTunes comes standard on OSX - OS9 users can download iTunes Classic
  • Speed: 400MHz G3 processor or better
  • Memory: 128 MB RAM minimum/256 RAM recommended
  • Hard Disk: at least 100MB free
  • Modem: 56k modem minimum

I cannot hear anything.

Please make sure you read the minimum requirments first.

Streaming MP3 requires that you have an MP3 player installed. Apple Macintosh computers already have iTunes installed. Windows computers can use Windows Media to play MP3 files but you will need to configure it to work this way. There are other MP3 players out there for Windows computers. We recommend iTunes but there are other players to choose.

    Configure Windows Media Player
  • Open Windows Media Player
  • On the "Tools" menu choose "options"
  • Find the "Formats" tab and check #7 "MP3 Format Sound". Click "OK".

    Apple Macintosh

Our live Real Audio stream is actually a 32kbs MP3 stream played through the Real Player. If you are not receiving any audio a number of things might be the problem:

  • You or your company is restricting access to MP3 streams: try Windows Media Player
  • You are using version 10 of Real Player: We have had some problems with this player. Please download the Real One Player

I can hear it but the sound cuts out often.

Our live Real Audio stream is actually a 32kbps MP3 stream played through the Real Player. Our archives are in Real Audio 5. If the audio is choppy a number of things might be the problem:

  • You are using version 10 of Real Player: We have had some problems with this player. Please download the Real One Player
  • You are on a dialup connection and there is not enough bandwidth to stream without interruption: set your buffer very high by going to the "Tools" menu
