December 6 / 7, 2003 On the Nod By CHRIS GREEDER America, you are on the nod. Smashed down, passed out, naked In some shady alley of democracy. Your dry scales peel and pus. One fang hangs loose in your jaw and rotten with the past your breath slips in and out. Remember America, when you woke up that time so startled by that distant explosion? How sad it was when you were only strong enough to vomit the remains of your stomach Into the broken television set Your body's propped on. Then it was right back to lights out. Sometimes these days you're slammed awake By dark hallucinations. Your sick eyes open, head wobbles you speak in prepositions And you point your claw. "There" you accuse. "Over there" and then it's back to lights out. Lights out America, where the shadow people stumble Through the malls of your endless catnap And where the chitchat of barter sounds In the tones of a dirge. Where the waterfalls Flow through miniature golf courses, and the used Car lot amusement park never closes. Yeah, you're on the nod America Broke and broken. And you were awake only enough to listen You'd hear the alley slowly becoming a vice.
