Surgery Interactive Multimedia Modules (SIMMs)
About the SIMMs
Welcome to the Surgical Interactive Multimedia Modules,
or SIMMs for short. This application was designed as
an integral part of the third year medical student surgical clerkship
at the NYU School of Medicine. Because a significant portion of surgical
patient care occurs in an outpatient setting that is unavailable to a
medical student, we've attempted to provide a computerized linear
narrative of the patient's illness and the patient-physician interaction
from the patient's first visit to his or her physician, through
the diagnostic process, into the operating room, to the pathology, and
finally to the postoperative visits.
The SIMMs are designed to provide students with the core of the curricular
material with accessory material available for those students who wish
to explore a topic in broader depth. One goal of the SIMMs is to enhance
the educational value of actual clinical experiences by "priming"
students with core material and principles in an environment that is user
driven and free from the constraints implicit in the clinical context.
Our vision is that the SIMMs will allow students to maximize actual contact
time with patients and help place their clinical experiences into the
proper context of the entire flow of the patient's care
The SIMMs were developed jointly by the Department
of Surgery and the Department
of Advanced Educational Systems and are an educational resource that
the NYU School of Medicine wishes to share with the educational community.
