With the athletes of a record 202 nations on the ground and spectacular fireworks in the air, the Olympics conclude in Athens. With 103 medals, the United States won the most. In the marathon, the final event, American Mebrahtom Keflezighi captured a silver.

rosenberg2k.jpg More than 10,000 athletes, and Athens was thrilled for the very last one. "Sometimes I try" to stop, marathoner Marcel Matanin said, "but the people around me say, 'You must run, run, run.' " He ran, ran, ran. Matanin arrived at Panathinaiko Stadium 40 minutes after the men's marathon winner, Stefano Baldini of Italy. But he arrived. And the crowd, which was still singing and dancing and celebrating, cheered for Matanin. Welcome to the party. Michael Rosenberg column
