Rites of Summer
August is one of the more underappreciated months of all. Congress is in recess. Last-minute vacations abound. Congress passes no new laws. Tax returns are filed (with the extension). Congress doesn't make a total hash of anything. The last preseason NFL games play out, and college football starts. And Congress is out campaigning and otherwise not bothering anyone. You get the idea. August also brings the conventions, which also have their rites. As the GOP convention is upon us, it is worth a quick look at the rites attendant with this one hundred and fifty year old tradition.

The Republican National Convention--Night Two

Few things could match the drama of the first night of the convention, when we heard from two heroes about the prosecution of the war on terrorism. Tonight was low on drama, but then, I suppose that was purposeful since the object of tonight's proceedings was to reach out to moderates and independents.

RedState at the RNC: a chat with Bret Schundler
This evening at Madison Square Garden, Red State was privileged to interview Bret Schundler, conservative former mayor of Jersey City, Republican candidate for New Jersey governor in 2001, and current Chairman of Empower the People.

He discussed two very major projects he has underway:

  • A new technology he's developed that empowers citizens and spurs campaigns to better utilize technology

  • Fundamental change in the governance and politics of his beloved state of New Jersey.

    Thune Pulls Ahead

The excellent Daschle v. Thune blog has the results of a NRSC poll showing John Thune pulling ahead of Tom Daschle. The poll of 500 likely South Dakota voters shows Thune leading Daschle 50% to 48%, with a MOE of 4.4%.

And meanwhile, Daschle is running an ad showing him hugging President Bush and showing how much he supports the President. Naturally, the far-left base that's support Daschle should be livid - we'll see how this effects his Hamptons fundraisers.

Thune has a ways to go against the slippery incumbant, but Daschle is in the race for his life, and if anyone can end the reign of the Lizard King of the Senate, John Thune is the man to do it.

UPDATE: And don't miss jannelson's link-filled roundup on the Daschle v. Thune race.

    RedState Interviews Bobby Jindal
Redstate sat down for ten questions with Bobby Jindal, who’s running for Congress in the first district of Louisiana. Jindal shared his take on the convention thus far, his answer to the “who leads after Bush?” question, and his answers for the domestic policy challenges of the next few years.

    A Rush for Bush
The president had a great interview with the leading radio personality. He is, as everyone knows, a subpar public speaker, and he oftens struggles in hostile question-and-answer settings. But, whenever he talks to sympathizers, he usually excels -- perhaps even more than other politicians do. Today was no different.... Print This Story

    2004 Sour Grapes Award Nominee
    Promoted from Diaries.

That 15-point Kerry lead in the polls is almost as painful as the certain knowledge that the Democrats are poised to retake the House; already control the Senate; and are the unabashed majority Party in this country, as witness their domination of statehouses and governors' mansions across the U.S. of A.

No, wait: Bush is leading, the GOP is set to increase its stranglehold on the House, it holds the Senate and will hold even or pick up a couple of seats this time; and it is the majority party.

    What gives, then?

    John Judis gives.

    Election Day in Florida
    Promoted from Diaries.

I cast my vote at about 10:30 this morning in a sleepy voting room at a Democratic precinct in a Democratic county.  Locally, there is a wide open County Comissioner's race, but otherwise there isn't much reason for people here in Leon County (Tallahassee) to vote.

Besides the Senate race, there are a couple of races for political junkies to watch. Read on.

Update [2004-8-31 13:25:57 by Charles Fenwick]: No major voting problems noted (so far). Some expected turnout numbers have been published.

Update [2004-8-31 17:35:23 by Charles Fenwick]: Results coming in... Martinez leads w/ 10% of votes in

Update [2004-8-31 18:19:6 by Charles Fenwick]: Connie Mack IV Wins FL-14 primary. Martinez lead widens as Miami-Dade results start to come in.

Update [2004-8-31 18:19:6 by Charles Fenwick]: AP calls the race for Betty Castor.

Blogs, Media, Politics. A chat with Brent Bozell
One of my favorite conservatives sat down with RedState this morning, Brent Bozell of the Media Research Center. First, a piece of advice: if you ever get the chance to go to the MRC's Media Dishonors Awards, GO. It's one of the most entertaining conservative events in DC, and while that's a pretty low bar - you won't be disappointed. Since Brent is one of the premier media critics on the right, we were very interested to get his thoughts on how blogs are changing media and politics - and he didn't disappoint. Print This Story

    House '04: Missouri's 3rd District
RedState sat down with three-time congressional candidate Bill Federer this morning. If you're on any conservative mailing lists, you'll likely remember his name. He ran against Dick Gephardt twice, in 1996 and 2000. Now he's running for a third time against Russ Carnahan, son of Mel and Jean. Things are looking a lot brighter for Bill Federer, and that's a good thing. Print This Story

Heel of the Hunt: The final days of Florida's GOP Senate Primary
Today, the long strange race comes to an end as voters head to the polls. Here's a look at the tumlutuous final days of the Republican primary campaign for Florida's U.S. Senate Seat in which a newspaper withdrew its endorsement, the Governor asked for a television ad to be pulled, and the long-time leader in the polls appeared to fall to second. RNC Media Wrap-up Day One

RNC Day Two: a bit of news on Catholic voters
It's Tuesday here in NYC, and things are just getting going. For today's news, something to follow up on my comments about catholic voters yesterday. While the left shouted with no small amount of glee when Crisis Magazine editor Deal Hudson resigned from his role of advisg BC '04 on the Catholic vote, one question remained unanswered: who would take Deal's place? Well, we can report that Leonard Leo, member of the Catholic Working Group and Executive Vice President of the Federalist Society is poised to step up to the plate. Print This Story

    "A Nation of Courage"
I watched Senator McCain and Rudy Giuliani address the RNC. What a great first night. It is important that McCain endorse President Bush, especially because McCain was Kerry's first choice for Kerry's running mate. McCain's speech was good. He reminded us the stakes in the war against terror: Print This Story

    Waitasecond. Whatabout Bill?
    (Crossposted to Obsidian Wings)

That was my rather belated reaction to the secondhand recounting of whatever it was that Mary Anne Marsh said last week on Hannity and Colmes. I say secondhand because I originally got it from Jeff Goldstein: for that matter, the show hasn't posted a transcript. Jay Nordlinger noted it later on: no transcript there, either, so for all I know there's a context* issue.
