Mining pop culture to win elections
In the early 1980s, one of my tasks, as I labored inside the Reagan White House, was to read and summarize The National Enquirer every week. My reading chore might not have been the most important work going on in Ronald Reagan's presidency, but it was fun. And it taught me an enduring lesson: In today's America, the political culture exists within the popular culture.

McGreevey hides big sin, corruption
It was inevitable. By playing the sex card - even better, the gay-sex card - New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey bought himself some grace from the media and a bump-up in public opinion. Gubernatorial corruption places second to sexual liberation.

On stem cells, Bush blinded by science
On the theory that presidential elections should be about the future, not the past, let's put aside for the moment all decades-old controversies about Vietnam - who went and did what, or who didn't go at all - and consider, instead, an issue that will be shaping our lives in the coming decades: genetic manipulation of the human species.

War makes for divergent recollections
Could all the things that some of his fellow Vietnam veterans are saying about John Kerry - that he faked his heroism, that he filmed his fake heroism, that he lied to get his Purple Hearts, that he lied about being in Cambodia - be true?

BOSTON - Nobody pays much attention to political platforms anymore, but that doesn't mean they aren't significant. The Democrats, in ideological retreat for the past quarter-century, have finally found an issue that's a clear winner.

The landscape hasn't changed much
The obvious point to make about the rushed-up "transfer of sovereignty" in Iraq yesterday is that such a hurried handoff was not in the original plan. But evidently, hoopla about "Mission Accomplished, Part Two" became too ridiculous - or too dangerous - to contemplate. And what Americans will soon be contemplating is an Iraq without Americans.

Why we've won the war but not peace
Why did the United States have such an easy time winning the Iraq war - and is having such a hard time winning the Iraq peace? One answer comes from a new book, which makes a simple point: A killer elite can change a regime, but it can't change a country.

There is uplift along with sadness
Ronald Reagan's passing has been a sad occasion, but his memorialization offers uplift as well. Because we are not only mourning his death; we are also celebrating his life and the country that gave birth to him. This is the country we love, because it shelters us today, regardless of who we are and what we believe in our private lives.

Bush Doctrine cant match Reagans
Was Ronald Reagan the first neoconservative? And so, would the Gipper have invaded Iraq, just like George W. Bush? Not surprisingly, the neocons are claiming the Reagan legacy - the evidence notwithstanding.

Their ‘battle stations’ were no defense
When terrorists plan to strike America, should they call in advance and make reservations? If not -- if they aren't specific about time and place -- should President George W. Bush and the rest of the federal government be held blameless for failing to stop them? That's been the view of the White House for the past two-and-a-half years, although public pressure may be changing that complacency.
